Another Brass Framed Shower Camouflage Solution

Do you remember Gwen’s brass-framed shower?

The solution for camouflaging the brass frame on her shower was pretty simple. It just needed a pretty shower curtain (that can actually be closed all the way)!

The solution for John & Alice’s shower is not quite so easy because of the configuration of the shower.

I could put a shower curtain on the front, which I do plan on doing, but that won’t take care of the side glass panel!

So I’ve been mulling over different ideas. I considered doing a piece of artwork that would cover the exact size, but then anyone standing in the shower would be looking at the back of a canvas. That’s not attractive at all! Another issue was that I didn’t want to do something that would block out the light completely.

Then a couple of nights ago, as I was about to go to sleep, the thought hit me…

SHUTTERS!!

So yesterday, I hopped in my car and drove to ReStore to check out what they had. It turns out that they had just what I needed. I returned to J & A’s house with these…

I got a pair of arched-top shutters, and one square-top shutter, for a total of $15.  Not bad!  Gotta love ReStore!!  The plan was to connect all three to create a screen.  I didn’t necessarily want the screen to be a feature in the room, but wanted it more to be used more as a “backdrop” for another item that I’m going to make…that will finally make use of all of those little wood pieces I cut!!  Yay!!

The first step in making my screen was to cut the middle shutter to the same length as the other two.

I just used my miter saw for this.  I knew that if I cut through the side frame pieces, the extra slats would fall right out.  So just two simple cuts, a couple of slats removed, and it was the right length.

Then I attached the shutters using a bead of wood glue, and then a few finishing nails from my nail gun (shot at an angle).  It really couldn’t get much easier than this.

I still need to finish out the bottom, but I went ahead and gave the screen a coat of primer.

I decided to paint it Oregano (Rustoleum Painter’s Touch), but only had about a third of one can.  It was close to the end of my work day, so I decided to hold off until today to finish it up.

I plan on distressing and antiquing it some, and then once it’s in place, I’ll attach a decorative item to the front of it.  So, you’ll have to stay tuned for the finished product!!  With my record of Plan B’s lately, I’m really hoping that this Plan A turns out!!!

  1. Hi:-)

I really like your blog and look forward to all your new entry's but I just don't get this AT ALL?? Why would you cover up gold shower door frames with unsightly shower curtains and wooden shutters in a bathroom??? It doesn't make sense?

Is this a massive cultural difference?
    I'm from Melbourne Australia

    🙂

  2. I think you have to use enamel paint after finely scratching the surface of the brass in order to get something that will last. And replacing them is expensive. Kuddos to you for coming up with a creative solution!

  3. If shiny brass-framed shower enclosures are popular in Australia, turn yes…we'll chalk this up to a cultural difference. They're considered terribly outdated and hideous here. And if a custom shower curtain, which is essentially a custom drapery for the sheer or tub, is considered "unsightly", then you and I could not be more polar opposites when it comes to decorating.

  4. Hehehe 🙂 Yes, it's true, they are popular here! Especially with floor to ceiling marble and all brass (golden) fittings. They are almost considered posh(!) but most popular are the frame-less glass doors most people have these plastic-y covered frames or, wait for it, shower curtains!!
    (I am not a designer)

Hey, good luck with this project – it will be interesting to see how it turns out!

    🙂

  5. I'm hoping you see this, Kristi, even though it's a day-old blog entry. Beginning a few days ago, I suddenly am unable to post comments on your current day's blog posts (but, as you can see, can comment on OLD ones). Do you have any idea how I can fix this? It's making me batty! 🙂

  6. Deb, that's so strange!!! I honestly have no idea what would cause that. Others are posting comments on today's post, so I'm guess the problem is with your computer, rather than Blogger. Have you tried rebooting your computer? Wow, I hope you can get it figured out!! Is the problem with all Blogger blogs, or just mine?

  7. Well, I reboot every day, so that's not fixing it. It's a puzzle! And really frustrating, because your blog has become a daily fix for me and I'm MOUTHY and hate not being able to join in the conversation! Funny thing is at least one person is having the same problem on MY blogger blog, but she's at least able to post anonymously. I can't even change the profile I post from. I can't click on anything – my cursor turns into a bracket when I go anywhere near the comment box (which is missing its top border) or the choices below it. I'm going to fiddle around a bit with cache clearing and whatnot – wish me luck! Oh, and I agree with the others who voted for a tall vase in that spot between the mirrors on today's post. 🙂

  8. I have this same shower/tub set up. On the tub side of the shower perhaps you could make a light weight "picture frame" for the gold frame of the shower. Paint it the same color of your wall or molding and use velcro to attach.

  9. Also, I used a folding screen in front of my tub so that I would feel more cozy/ hide the shampoo. Would a matching screen work there, too?

  10. shower doors,Yes, it's true, they are popular here! Especially with floor to ceiling marble and all brass (golden) fittings

  11. Including shutter with shower screens is a right idea and that will serve your purpose too. I also like the idea of Brass Shower Frame very much. Nice descriptive post you have made, thanks.

  14. I also added a shower curtain to hide those shower doors. What's funny is that originally I thought those doors were the ultimate in decorating.

  15. Love that you tackled this project. I see this everyday, and this is a great alternative for the DIY home owners and sellers. The finished product looks fantastic! I have featured on one of my blogs, and love you blog too!

  16. A shower screen with brass frame!!!!! It is really a good idea and looking fabulous. I really appreciate you as you have posted an informative post.
