Board & Batten:: Simple, Fresh, and Beautiful

As I shared yesterday, I will be adding a beautiful board and batten wall treatment to the master bedroom in Alice & John’s house.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve grown to absolutely love a board and batten treatment–so much so that I used it in the (still unfinished) living room and eating area in my own little condo.

I chose to use a shorter board and batten that stops at a more traditional chair rail height, but there is no right and wrong when it comes to the height. It’s all a matter of taste, or a matter of what fits best into a particular room.

Kimba at A Soft Place To Land added board and batten to her living room, covering the full height of her walls. The results are stunning. Take a look at the before and after:

Isn’t that beautiful? And she even shares a tutorial for how to create this look.

Board and batten walls seem to have a timeless look to them. Here’s a picture of the 2003 HGTV Dream Home master suite–still beautiful seven years later!

And while I personally prefer a coat of fresh, creamy white paint on a board and batten wall treatment, there is no rule that says it has to be painted. For those who prefer the look of natural wood, there’s always the option to use stain instead of paint, as in this example from This Old House.

The stained version is also the most expensive option, as the entire wall has to be covered in wood, and the battens have to be real wood. For a painted board and batten, it’s not necessary to cover the walls before adding the battens, and the battens can be out of MDF molding, which is cheaper.

Here are some other beautiful examples of board and batten walls:

Isn’t it amazing how a simple (and fairly inexpensive) board and batten treatment adds so much to a room!?

Now I just need to get my hands on a nail gun, and I’ll be ready to get started!
