Unlined Pinch Pleated Draperies

how to make unlined pinch-pleated draperies with contrast fabric band
unlined pinch pleated drapery panel tutorial

Last night I came across some pictures for a tutorial that, for some reason, I never wrote!  This is a bit of a blast from the past, but do you remember Gwen’s bathroom makeover?  She had a shower with a brass frame, and to camouflage it a bit, I made an unlined pinch pleated drapery panel with a contrasting fabric band along the edge to use as a curtain in front of the shower. So if you’d like to know how to make your own unlined … [Read more...]

Q & A–What Options Do I Have With My Outdated Bathroom Tile?

reader question--bathroom tile

I have a feeling today's question will resonate with many owners of previously-owned homes, or even with many homeowners who have been in their home for a couple of decades or more. Mary from Tennessee writes:  My husband and I just bought this house and are in the process of renovating it. The one room that has me stumped is the master bath because of the LARGE amount of surface this outdated tile covers. I will do the obvious things … [Read more...]

thumbnail--mixed metals

Good morning, all!  I received a decorating question from a reader, Lindsay in Salt Lake City, regarding mixing the finishes of hardware in a room.  This has to be one of the most often asked questions that I get, so let’s talk about it!  Here’s what Lindsay had to say: “I am currently building a home. Hardware needs to be chosen and I'm having a hard time deciding on what to choose. I have shaker style cabinets with a dark espresso … [Read more...]

How To Hanging Pictures On Tile

without drilling holes or damaging your tile
thumbnail--hang pictures on tile

It’s not often that I’ll just endorse a product outright, but when it comes to hanging pictures on tile, there’s only one product I’ll use:  Command Picture Hanging Strips. Generally when I mention these, people confuse them with the Command strips that have adhesive on both sides.  Those double-sided adhesive strips are good for some purposes, but I’ve actually had some problems with them not holding. These Picture Hanging … [Read more...]

Remember a while back I showed you a free printable from Simple As That that I wanted to use as artwork over my kitchen sink?  Well it’s finally finished!  Here’s how it turned out…   I made it using some of the scrap MDF that’s piled in my office (and that I refuse to throw away), and some moulding, wood glue, spray adhesive, the free printable (printed on matte photo paper) and some clear spray.   Now if you’re … [Read more...]

Change Your Cabinet Hardware From Pulls To Handles

without leaving any evidence of a hole in the drawer or door
thumbnail--change cabinet hardware knobs to pulls

I have a pretty standard system when it comes to cabinet hardware, and pretty much the only time I deviate from my standard is when I'm making my own hardware.  But generally, I like to put round knobs on doors, and handles on drawers.  I like the combination of two different styles of hardware, and that way just seems to make sense to me. But what happens if your existing hardware isn’t what you want, and the holes are in the wrong … [Read more...]

More Painting Tips (Painting Cabinet Doors)

I’ve done more painting in the last year that I’ve ever done in my life, and with each project, it seems like I pick up another tip that makes things easier, or makes the finish prettier.  So, like a good blogger who cares about her readers, I’m passing those on to you.  A few days ago, I was at John & Alice’s house painting cabinet doors and the granite man stopped by.  He was asking me all about the process I was … [Read more...]

How To Make A Hand Painted Floor Cloth

turn a scrap piece of vinyl flooring into a pretty rug alternative
thumbnail--hand painted floor cloth

I’ve deemed my floor cloth finished…for now.  I ended up not putting a binding on the edges because I realized that any type of fabric on the edges (I was planning on using quilt binding) would make it difficult to sweep the floor cloth.  Right now without the binding, I can sweep things right off of the floor cloth with ease.  With the binding, I’m afraid that dirt and junk would get caught up underneath the fabric.  Definitely not a … [Read more...]
