DIY Sunburst Mirror Roundup

Oh yeah, these things are everywhere!  I know that ideas travel fast in the blogosphere, but this one sure seemed to really take on a life of its own, didn’t it?

I don’t even really remember why I started looking at DIY sunburst mirrors last night, but I was really blown away by all of the variations on the theme.  So if you’re still one of the holdouts, and haven’t yet made a sunburst mirror, you’re sure to find one here that fits your style.  (All of the thumbnails are directly linked to the source.)

I think the lesson learned here is that you can take any object that’s long and slender, glue it in a circular shape, add a mirror, and viola!  You have a sunburst mirror!

During my search for DIY sunburst mirrors, take a look at this non-DIY version that I came across.

labarge sunburst mirror with silver leaf finish

Wanna guess how much this costs?  This LaBarge sunburst mirror with silver leaf finish is from Furniture Direct, and it costs a whopping $2504.98.  Yeah, you read that right.  The funny thing is that it says the MSRP is $4497.00, so if you buy this one, you’ll save $1992.02!!!  What a bargain!!

OR, you could make mine for around $30.  Space the slats a little differently so that the “rays” are more pronounced, and you’d have a fairly reasonable facsimile of this outrageously priced sunburst mirror.  Heck, you could even cover the entire thing with silver leave, and you’d still come in under $100.

So did I leave out one of your favorites?  If so, leave a link in the comments!  I love seeing all of the different variations that people have come up with.

  1. Wow!  Quite the round-up.  Did you know the hot pink one is SPOONS?!?  There are so many creative people in this world.  I'm going to spend the rest of my daw in awe.

  2. Hi Kristi-

Great roundup of starburst mirrors – it is fascinating to see all the different versions together like this.  It is hard choosing which one I like best. I like the knife spoon and fork one – very clever and I have already made one following your directions – it is hanging in my guest room.   Thanks for including mine.

    My best- Diane

  3. I'm still working on mine, which is a modified version of your wood shim one.  It's not *quite* what I hoped it would be, although I should probably not judge it until it's completely finished.  (Hmmm, I think I've been working on it for a few months now?  I just realized I probably shouldn't nag my husband about his unfinished projects when I have trouble finishing my own…)

  4. Sunburst Mirrors are dear to my heart. Thank you for the wonderful article and pictures. You have given me some great ideas to build my own sunburst mirror and save thousands of dollars.

  5. From a simple circle, it turned out really well. Being creative will really help us be in a better way of living.

  6. Kristi, thanks for linking up my mirror!  I love the way you did yours!  I also enjoyed your post about ALT tags on photos.  Gotta start doing that!

  7. I love all these DIY Sunburst mirrors. I did my own version not too long ago made out of plain white cardstock if you would like to check it out and perhaps add it to your list.
