Furniture Color--Can I Use Dark Brown And Black Together?

by S. Collins
(Kansas City, MO)

Will a dark brown microfiber sofa set go well with black occasional tables? The house is open floor plan, and the walls are all citrus colors. The fireplace (where the sofa set will be) in the Great Room is black...not my choice. My husband's truly.

Answer:

I think if I were you, I would opt for a sofa in a lighter fabric--maybe a tan or even a cream color. The dark brown and black would seem to compete with each other, while a tan or cream with the black would allow the black accent furniture to stand out nicely.

Happy decorating,

Mix Away
by: Kristi @ Addicted 2 Decorating

Hi Rosie~
The short answer...it's actually perfectly fine to mix and match different wood colors. It gives your home a more mix and match look, as if you're a well-traveled person who's collected items over the years. When everything matches, it tends to look as if you made one trip to the furniture store and purchased all matching sets of furniture. It tends to have a less interesting look when everything's so matchy-matchy.
