Have You Tried Chalk Paint?

Sometimes I feel like I must be living under a rock.  Somehow, I’ve been missing out on Chalk Paint.  I had never even heard of it until this past Sunday, and now I’m completely taken with it!  I’ve been told that there’s actually a place that sells it locally (right here in little Waco, Texas, which shocks me to my core), so I’m definitely going to check it out.

What’s so great about Chalk Paint?  Evidently, there’s no need to sand or prime the surface before painting, it cleans up with water, and it contains very low VOCs.  It also gives furniture a gorgeous chalky finish, and is easy to distress, antique, and wax.

Here are a few pieces I found painted with Chalk Paint…

Aren’t those finishes gorgeous?!  I’m really anxious to find a Goodwill dresser or something like that and try out this paint.  No sanding, no priming!  Sounds good to me!

So have you tried Chalk Paint yet?  How did you like it?

  1. You can also mix up your own chalk paint in any color you like. The recipe is:

1 cup paint in a small container
    2 tablespoons unsanded tile grout

Mix thoroughly with a paint stirrer. Break up any clumps.

Apply paint with a roller or sponge paintbrush to a primed or painted surface. Its better to apply several thinner coats rather than one thick gloppy one.

    Let it dry.

Smooth it off with 150 grit sandpaper. And then wipe off the dust.

Take the side of a piece of chalk and rub over the entire surface. Then wipe away the residue with a slightly wet sponge.

  2. lol Nancy. Don't be embarrassed. I asked about this paint on the A2D Facebook page this weekend, and almost everyone who responded thought I was talking about chalkboard paint. 🙂

  3. Diana, I've been told that one of the shops in Spice carries it. I'm not sure which one, and I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but I hope to find out soon!!

  4. Yes I've tried it. Love it so far. Don't be afraid though. The first coat goes on nice & smooth, the 2nd, not quite so much.. Dries beautiful though!

  5. I have a can of Louis blue and have some grey color coming. Can't wait to use it! Got a table to use it on and seriously thinking about using the grey for kitchen cabinets. That means I am going to do it, cause once I get it in my head, it pretty much has to be done. That's the way I roll.

  6. I stopped in Waco on my way to Austin JUST TO BUY SOME CHALK PAINT! I ended up with a quart of Louis Blue and some wax. I wanted the old white but they were out. It's at LilyLane (way back in the corner at Spices). Luckily someone here in DFW area just started selling it too so I'm going to get some white. I haven't used it yet because I'm doing a white/blue piece. But I keep looking at the paint can longingly….

  7. I haven't tried it, and in fact, I thought you meant chalkboard paint when I first read it. 😉 Mostly I'm just leaving a comment because that last dresser is so beautiful! LOVE it.

  8. People keep getting "chalk BOARD paint' confused with Chalk paint…..anyway, I've ordered some online, as there's no where to buy it in Canada. Can't wait. It sounds like a dream, because there's no priming, sanding etc. I found out about it through Miss Mustard Seed.

  9.  I have no idea.  You'll have to Google it and find the website for that information.

  10. If you are interested in being a stockist in your state or a mini stockist in an area that there is already a stockist in place, email me, and I will put you in touch with the right person in that area.  We are growing by leaps and bounds.  This is the only way to purchase wholesale.

    1. Hello,
Can you please give me info on buying wholesale or becoming a stockists if you are still in the know.
      Thank you,
      Susan
      PS I’m from Valparaiso Indiana

  11. I am in the process of painting my first piece with Chalk Paint.  It goes on like a dream.  I'm just not sure I can continue to buy more, but it was a fun splurge.  I bought mine from the sweet girls at Lily Lane when they were set up at the Marburger/Round Top antiques weekend.  I might someday get down to their store (I'm about 3 hours away) because I have family that lives in Waco!

Happy that I found your blog! I'm your newest follower, hope you visit my blog and follow me, too!

  13. Hi, I redo old furniture for a living.  Called Deuxieme Debut and located in Montreal QC.  There is a place, located in Bath, Ontario.  It's called The Melon Patch.  They ship chalk paint.  I forgotten the owners name, but she's wonderful and very helpful.  Cheers, Dorothy

  14. Queda realmente bonito con la pintura de tiza. ALGUIEN TIENE LA FORMA DE PREPARARLA, PUES HE PREGUNTADO PARA COMPRARLA Y AQUI NO LA CONOCEN.
GRACIAS POR TODO LO QUE BRINDAN.ALBA

  15. I am also just trying out the chalk paint. I bought the Ce Ce Caldwell brand. However there is an Annie Sloan retailer right down the road! I have not waxed my first piece yet, but so far it is a bit rough. I am going to buy a better brush since I have been told that is the key to getting better results. Does the paint smooth out once you apply the wax?

  16. You can get Annie Sloan’s chalk paint in 2 locations in Austin – Bee Caves and Cedar Park.

    1. You can get Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Austin on S. Lamar and in Westlake now.
Annie Sloan Unfolded does not have current info on locations.

  17. I have used AS chalk paint on several pieces and love it.
I repainted my bathroom cabinets, an airmoire, buffet, table and chairs, and a few other pieces. I would not mess with trying to make it myself. The price is a little high, but it goes a long way and well worth the extra money not to have to sand or prime first. I have used 1 quart of paint to paint a kitchen table, coffee table, display cabinet, and mirror. A quart in a different color covered my bathroom cabinets and large armoire. You have to know how to use it or you might not be happy with it. There are many places on the internet or through Annie Sloans books, where you can learn how to use it properly.

  18. I’m seeing this post is from 2011, but I just stumbled onto the Annie Sloan chalk paint and am planning a trip to Waco to get some. I live about 45 minutes from where it’s sold there. Would love more info or an update if you have it.
