It’s a Giveaway:: Hand-Printed Textiles From Saffron Marigold

***This giveaway is now closed. Winner will be announced on Monday, September 6, 2010.***

Hello all! I’m so sorry I stood you up yesterday. It was a crazy busy day, and I had to hit the ground running, which left no time for blogging. But hopefully I can make it up to you today with this incredible giveaway from Saffron Marigold!

Saffron Marigold sells exquisite block-print textiles, such as duvet covers, tablecloths, table runners, pillow covers, cushion covers, curtains, and shower curtains. I hadn’t heard of this company until about two weeks ago, so naturally I was curious to see what they had to offer. But as I perused their website, I was not only amazed at their beautiful products, but I was absolutely captivated by the process in which these products are made.

Have you ever heard of block printing? I had heard of it, but I don’t think I ever realized just how much work goes into block printing. It all starts with these slices of shesham wood.

A master carver or his apprentice uses chisels and hammers to carve the intricate patterns into the blocks of wood.

Can you even imagine how long these patterns take to carve? Look at all of that detail! Absolutely amazing!

Meanwhile, all of the fabric is dyed and hung to dry in the sun.

And the color master prepares all of the dyes that will be used on the designs.

Next, holes are drilled into the carved blocks and stuffed with bits of cotton to ensure that the color will be distributed evenly.

And the printing begins. Only the most skilled printers lay out the initial framework for the piece.

The printing continues until the entire design is filled in.

Next, the printed fabrics are washed and beaten to ensure that all of the fixing agents are removed.

Then the fabrics are sent to the stitching unit.

After they’re stitched, they’re sent to the hot roller presses…

…then folded and packaged…

…then carted from the village to the marketplace or trucking hub.

All of that work to bring you these beautiful works of art that you can enjoy in your home:

India Rose table runner

Waltz of the Vines table runner

Moonlit Taj cushion covers

Ocean Breezes cushion covers

Ruby Kilim table cloth

Spice Route table cloth
And that’s just a small sampling of the gorgeous designs they have to offer!!
