Julia’s Kitchen Progress (and What’s Wrong With This Picture?)

Last Friday, I selected the wall color for Julia’s kitchen, and took it over to the painters. While I was there, I noticed a painting decision that seemed a bit…well…ODD to me. I’ll see if you notice it in these pictures.

But I absolutely love the wall color!! It’s called Analytical Gray from Sherwin Williams.

It’s more of a brown-gray (as opposed to a blue-gray), and it has just a touch of green. I love it!!

And I think it will blend beautifully with the granite we selected.

Isn’t that pretty? If you’ve read my blog for long, you know that I’m generally not a fan of granite…AT ALL. But I have to admit, I absolutely love this particular granite. The place where I found it calls it African Nile, but I’m almost sure that’s a proprietary name, because I tried to look it up online, and couldn’t find any granite by that name. But it’s gorgeous…white and gray, with hints of black/brown and a light green that runs through it.

It’s perfect for Julia’s kitchen. I can’t wait to see it installed!!

But now, back to that odd painting choice:

Do you see it?

The cabinets were still draped in plastic when I arrived, so I didn’t even notice the crown molding, but as they started unwrapping and untaping them, my first thought was, “What the heck?!” It seemed like such an odd decision to me to paint the crown molding white.

I guess it really is one of those head-scratchers, since the crown molding continues all the way around the room, but above the black cabinets, my thought was that it definitely needed to be black. Then they can transition to white in the corners. But to me, the white above the black cabinets makes the cabinets–which should look tall and elegant–look stubby and plain.

So what would you do? Paint the crown black above the cabinets, and transition to white in the corners? Paint all of the crown white, even above the cabinets? Paint all of the crown black?

I know what I like, and what makes sense to me. But clearly that’s not what made sense to the painter. I guess it’s just a matter of personal taste, and there’s not really a right and wrong answer.

But in the end, I will get my way. By the time I left, they were taping it off to spray it black.

Edit: The strange thing is that if you look at the pictures I took a few days ago, they had originally painted the crown above the cabinets black. The the painter decided that it looked funny, and that it should be white. Now I think it looks funny, so back to black it goes. 🙂

  1. Funny because I was thinking "What is up with the white molding on the cabinets?" before you asked. Not a fan of black molding in rooms but above the cabinets they need to be black. White in the rest. Maybe you could put a corner molding box up to help the transition. Love the A. Gray!

  2. I'd do all the crown above the cabinets black, all the crown attached to only ceiling (not attached to a cabinet), white. I agree with you Kristie. Cabinets don't look right, and appear shorter than they should.

  3. I think the white definately makes it look short and stubby, but I'm not sure what the black would look like? Make sure you post pics!!!

  4. I would keep the molding on the cabinets black as well and the rest white. It looks like they painted the sides' molding black though. That really is odd. It is looking great though!

  5. SG, the backsplash will be a continuation of the beadboard. I guess I'm tired of tile, too. 🙂

  6. Stephanie, he painted the side black while I was there…and after I protested the white. 😀 The he realized that painting with a brush wasn't exactly how he wanted to spend his day, so they started taping it off to spray.

  7. I would paint the crown above the cabinets black. You are spot-on. They look stubby. Transitioning at the corners would flow well, at least in MY head. 🙂

  8. Go with the black for sure. The cabinets will then look as if they extend all the way to the ceiling, and its OK to continue the rest of the molding around the room in white.

  9. White molding about the white cabinets looks wacky! Black molding above the cabinets and then white in the rest of the room is much better.

  10. The white molding above the black cabinets definitely looks funky. I think you should either go without the molding or paint it black. I'm with the rest of the crowd. Its looking great so far.

  11. I think the molding above the cabinets should be black, the way it was before!!! silly painter!!!

  13. The moldings above the cabinets look better black and the rest of the moldings should be white. I do think the black should be repeated around the room, perhaps in the accessories or curtain rod.

  14. Kristi, I think you are so right about the molding above the cabinets–it needs to be black. I can just picture folks in the kitchen just staring at the black cabinets with white molding, wondering. They might not remember anything about the kitchen except that one odd thing! Ack! Love the SW Analytical Gray–I almost chose that for my guest room.
    Blessings,
    Sindy 🙂
