Living Room Phase 1 – The Furniture & Rug Plan

(Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Overstock.com)

Yesterday, I showed y’all part of my Phase 1 plan for my living room

phase 1 living room plan

(By the way, I changed paint color. The Breakfast Blend was too dark, so I went one step up to Sweet Georgia Brown, which I’m pretty sure is what I used in Gwen’s bedroom almost three years ago.)

Anyway, today I’ll complete that picture with my furniture plan.

When we moved in, I really had no furniture at all for a living room. And no idea what I wanted for my living room. And really, no money burning a hole in my pocket to spend on living room furniture.

So imagine how ecstatic I was when I was contacted by Overstock.com, who offered me a $1000 gift card to decorate one room in my house!!!

Even though I had previously decided that I wanted to work on my bedroom first, I knew that money would be better spent on my neglected and very bare living room.

So I went shopping (virtually, of course), and let me tell you, it took me days to figure out exactly how I wanted to spend that gift card. There’s just soooo much stuff on that website, so many possibilities, and I was like a kid in a candy store.

But I finally decided on five items that I thought were good foundational pieces that would serve as a good jumping off point for my bare living room. Want to see what I chose?! 😀

First, I decided on this Hand-Woven Sisan Natural Brown Seagrass Rug in a 9 x 12 size.

I’ve wanted a seagrass rug for so long now, so I’m pretty excited to finally have one!

Next, I chose two of these Christopher Knight Home Malone Club Chairs.

Tufted, of course. 🙂 And the antique brass nail head trim is so pretty on these chairs.

And finally, I selected two of these Bunch Metal Glass End Tables.

They reminded me of something you might find at Pottery Barn, but at a much lower price.

So those are my Overstock.com choices. I was pretty amazed that I could get all five of those items for $1000! (Actually, I did spend $13 out-of-pocket.)

While those served as a good starting point, naturally five items does not a living room make. So here are some additional items that I’ll be using in the living room.

First, this antique dresser that I bought on Craigslist for $120.

Antique dresser purchased on Craigslist for $120

The woman originally wanted $150 for it, but I talked her down to $120. I’m sure I still over paid for it, considering that the veneer on the drawers is completely cracked and bubbled. But I absolutely loved the shape of the dresser, and I really wanted it.

I don’t plan on painting the dresser. Instead, I’m going to try my hand at restoring it. It’s definitely an antique piece, and I’m sure my work will destroy any value the piece has as an antique (which I couldn’t care less about), but I’m going to try my hand at re-veneering the drawers and then refinishing the whole piece in the same stain color it is currently. That’s not in the immediate plans, though. For now, it’s fine just like it is.

Next, I found this sofa at a local consignment store. It’s a Thomasville sofa, which I was thrilled about because I know they’re good, sturdy, well-made sofas. It was originally priced at $130, but I got it for $100.

The sofa is in fantastic shape — the frame, springs, and the cushions. Obviously the fabric is all wrong (especially with what I have planned) and needs to go, so I’ll be tackling the reupholstering sometime in the near future (hopefully with the help of my mom once again, who is great at upholstering large items like this).

I really love the arms on this sofa. It’s too bad that the detail is overpowered by the incredibly busy pattern of the fabric right now, but I’ll be upholstering it in a solid fabric, and playing up these unique features.

And finally, I’m planning on a big, tufted (are you shocked?) ottoman similar to this one from One Kings Lane, but upholstered in a deep, dark tealish blue velvety fabric (basically the darkest blue color in the drapery fabric) with pretty turned, stained legs.

I’ll be DIYing this project also. I’ve wanted to make a tufted ottoman for quite some time now, so I’m pretty anxious to get started on that.

That’s the plan! 🙂 While I probably won’t be able to get the upholstery stuff done by then, I plan to do as much work as possible on this room for the rest of this week and weekend, and I’ll show you my progress on Monday, when I’ll also be giving away two $100 gift cards to Overstock.com! So stay tuned for that. Again, that’ll be on Monday.

*I was provided a $1000 gift card by Overstock.com to decorate a room in my home. All opinions expressed in this post are my own.*

  1. FAB that Overstock gifted you, and great choices you made!

I have ordered many an item from Overstock over the years, LUVing their almost free shipping cost no matter what is purchased. I continue to keep my eye on the room rug and leather sofa I want for that “some day” purchase.

  2. Great start. Personally I think you’re insane with the re-veneering project and all but I’ll be anxious to see how it turns out, it sure has pretty lines! The couch sounds like a fun Mother-Daughter project too.

    1. Well now, I’ve never claimed to be sane. 😉 I figure I can give it a try, and if it doesn’t work out, there’s always Plan B. 🙂 But it’ll be awesome if it actually turns out!

      1. Veneering is much easier than you might think. Your “antique” is not a hundred years old, and in that condition it would not be considered to valuable to worry about restoring it. From a lifelong involvement in the antiques business, I’m telling you to go ahead and restore it. The lines are beautiful, and every room needs one old piece to ground it. In my case, I can hardly put new pieces in my house. You’re going to be surprised at how easy it will be.

        1. If anyone can pull off a re-veering job, it’d be Kristi! I have full confidence in her ability to do this, because I know she’ll fully research how to do it; plus, she’s natural gifted as a designer and DIY-er. I cannot wait to see how this piece turns out, it’s gorgeous and the lines are just so classic.

  3. I love everything that you have bought, and am looking forward to seeing the final project! I admire the fact you are not afraid of color!!

  4. What pretty chairs you picked! I’ve bought from overstock before. They had some really nice foof chairs that I got for my son’s dorm room. I’d love to have a gift card to them and will check in on Monday!

  5. I am excited to see the end result. You are very energetic to take on a project like revaneering the dresser, I understand why you would like it the shape is great.

  6. oh Kristi all of this looks amazing and can’t wait to see it all put together. It will be so uplifting to you to have one room done (for now anyway) and pulled together. You just amaze me with your work. What do we have to do to win the gift certificate to Overstock.com? You sure spent wisely and got so much for $1,000. I am impressed. nancy

  7. I’ve never shopped Overstock.com but I am so glad they are helping you with the things you need for your new home. You make everything look beautiful and easy. I check your page everyday and don’t mind the “commercials”. Wish I had just a little bit of your energy!

  8. I love ALL your selections and I love Overstock; I but from them a lot! We have similar tastes in style because I’m digging the chest, sofa (I also love that style of arm), and chairs. Yum! I can’t wait to see a floor plan of the room!

  9. I love the dresser you bought. It will look good no matter what you do with it. Personally, I think it would look really good painted a funky turquoise color. If you have anybody in your family with mobility issues, be careful where you put the glass tables. I had a friend who almost fell face first into her glass coffee table.
It was really a good idea to buy a solid couch and recover it!

I have never bought from overstock.com but I will give it a look-see.

  10. Oooh la la, I love your choices! I’ll be watching with anticipation your every step along the way. I would love to know your opinion of the quality of the pieces that you receive from Joss & Main. I’ve wanted to order from them many times in the past, but was hesitant because I knew there was a no return policy. Thank you for documenting your talent and hard work in this wonderful blog!

  11. I re-upholstered my sofa several years ago, and the hardest thing about it was maneuvering around it. I didn’t have a table to set it on, so I just worked on it on the floor. It also had a tight back and only two seat cushions, which I sewed on my regular Singer sewing machine. I used the old cover for my pattern and took pictures as I stripped the old fabric off for future reference. Sorry I don’t have the pictures to post here, but while it took me longer than a day to complete, it was well worth it, and everyone said it looked professionally done. Seeing the chairs you and your mother reupholstered, I am fully confident that you can do the sofa. I too love the arms with the pleating, and that will definitely be a more prominent design element with a more solid appearing fabric. Looking forward to seeing it completed!

  12. Love your choices! And how FUN to get $1000 to spend — wheeeeeee! On pins and needles to see how it all comes together. 🙂

  13. I cannot wait to see it all come together! You have wonderful taste! I wish you could come do my house. I want something nice, causally elegant, but different from what everyone else gravitates toward and that seems to be right up your alley. I hate cookie cutter homes. Anyway, I had been eying similar chairs on another sight but after experiencing terrible customer service on that sight I decided to google it and was happy to find them cheaper on Overstock, although they were still out of price range =(. I’m super excited to see you reupholster that couch! I hope you find that it’s easy enough for any diy-er to do. Oh the possibilities that would open for someone on a budget =)

  14. Good choices on your shopping spree. Love the chairs. And that dresser !! Holy crap that’s a beautiful piece. No matter what you do to it, it will be gorgeous.

  15. My fave of what you’ve selected is the chair. But, it’s all going to be just beautiful together. I just ordered some stuff from Overstock and I love what I got! It is just what I expected (and needed)!

  16. So I told you that I had that Breakfast Blend color and originally wanted to paint all of my master bedroom walls in it, but I agree – it’s too dark. So I am going to do three walls a lighter brown (Sunset Beige by Behr) and then do the wall where our bed is the dark Breakfast Blend color. When we first bought our house we were so excited and ran straight to Home Depot to buy paint without buying sample pots first. Let me just say that I will NEVER do that again. Always buy sample pots!!!! Sigh** Live and learn. =]

  17. I cant wait to see how your livingroom turns out. What a sweet gift from overstock.com. Hey they use to have a great holiday commercial too. 🙂 Love those chairs.

  18. No way! That Christopher Knight chair is the exact same one I’ve been dying to get for my apartment living room! You lucky lady, you! I love the classic feel of your furniture and upholstery choices. Sophisticated but oh so comfy. 🙂 Excited to see how it all turns out!

  19. I really like the choices you’ve made from Overstock.com. With the pieces you already have I can almost ‘see’ the room. I hope my vision of the room will be close to what you complete. The sofa will be great when recovered and I can’t wait to see how you repair the chest of drawers. Those will be wonderful with the purchased pieces. Gooooooooooooooo Kristi!

  20. I just LOVE that you always get the most value for your money! Its been so much fun to see your progress in this house, it gets me pumped to tackle my own projects. 🙂

  21. Nice choices. I loooove overstock. I have furnished my entire livingroom from that site. Sofas, chairs, tables, pictures, window treatments. entertainment center, area rugs. The quaility is great and the customer service is even better. Can’t wait to see your rooms completed.

  22. Love, love, love your color palette of blues and greens! That’s my very favorite color combination. . . like bringing a little bit of the outside in! The lines on the antique dresser are beautiful, too. I am very anxious to see the furniture layout you have planned for this space. I’ve never purchased from overstock but I’ll be sure and check it out. Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress!

  23. as I scrolled down I said to myself “yes” at every piece you picked.. wonderful choices and I think combined with that beautiful bureau the room will be comfortable and elegant! Having recently separated from my husband and moved into an apartment, overstock, joss and main, and one kings lane have been a godsend to me in furnishing this place. Oh, and of course, Ikea! Can’t wait to see the progression.

  24. It’s going to be drop dead gorgeous. Another thumbs up on your choices. I’ve always been pleased with whatever I bought from Overstock. About the veneer, I’ve done some of that and it will be a piece of cake for you compared to other diy projects you’ve done, like that chevron table and the last bath remodel and the your new bed. Go for it. It will look SO classy!

  25. Kristi, congrats on the Overstock gift card, that’s wonderful help for your room! I love the pieces you picked out, the room is going to be gorgeous when you’re done with. I cannot wait to see the re-veneering project on the dresser, as well as the reupholstery on the sofa. I made a slipcover for a friend’s sofa and wow was that a bear to do because I was on my own doing it and had no help at all. Took forever! It’s a tremendous amount of work, I’m glad you will have help from your mom. It’s going to be beautiful when it’s done as the sofa has nice lines.

  26. Congratulations on the Overstock.com post. I think you made excellent choices and I love the chairs. It would be nice to have a great surprise like that. Have fun, btw I was glad to see you lighten up the brown, but it is hard to tell on the computer.

  27. Oh you lucky girl, you! I wish somebody would offer me $1000 to redecorate and write a review! How do you find a willing company that has money burning a hole in their corporate pocket? Our home needs so much decorating! Love what you picked out and what you have planned! I’m going to have to look up that chair as I’ve been on the hunt for one for our bedroom. I’ve been pretty much stuck up here since I injured my leg in June and my rocking chair that I use isn’t too comfy. Side note: bone scan tomorrow to see if I’ve been dealing with a broken femur for 5 months. The pain is incredible! Anyway, love it all and can’t wait to see it all together! I’m sure you dream about it every night! Thanks again for sharing! Hugs, Leena

  28. I checked out Overstock.com and found 3 hanging lights that I am buying! The prices are wonderful! I’m looking forward to seeing the finished room!

  29. I think refinishing a piece of furniture is actually a good way to go. And sometimes there is a surprise color underneath. I refinished an antique dark dark brown table for my mom, and found a tan wood underneath all those years of polish.
I have a question, maybe I am the only one who does not know this…why make a chair rail a light color, and have the wall darker?

  30. I’m so happy for you that you were given that gift certificate! Much deserved! Beautiful choices and I can’t wait to see it all come together. I have ordered from Overstock.com. Love that site!

  31. Your vision and execution are amazing! We refinished the hardwood floor in our L shaped living and dining room two years ago, and we still need area rugs. Overstock would be a giant help!

  32. Kristi, congrats on your gift card. You deserve it, you work so hard. The pieces you picked out are great basics. We have a similar rug in our living/family room and I’ve loved it from the moment it was unrolled. Look forward to watching your progress.

  33. I’m salivating!
What a GREAT gift from Overtstock.com, and what a fabulous shot in the arm you’re giving back to them via this awesome post. Your head is so full of exciting plans, Kristi and I found myself stressing over all you have to do. But that’s the thing–you are so organized and have a vision of the completed room so you’re great at prioritizing each step.

And I’m great at reading along and jut marveling at your progress.
I will be back on MONDAY! 🙂

  34. Oh I can’t wait to see how your room turns out- such great inspiration. I love the seagrass rug… we have a patterned one but I kind of wish we had gone more neutral now as my big black lab (very sweet) works slowly to destroy it. I bet seagrass will hold up really well!

  35. Beautiful choices! And I’ve had such a wonderful experience with Overstock.com each time I’ve bought from them, I’m sure you’ll be happy with your pieces as well. By the way, the fabric you chose is just lovely. 🙂

  36. Oh my Gosh!!! I can’t wait to see your posts on the upholstery projects! I have two wingback chairs that were my grandmothers that I need to reupholster and I will love to see how you do it. I love your blog and all your diy projects. Thanks so much for sharing your talent!

  37. I found your blog as I was researching online pricing for the P Kaufmann Florabunda Sea Grass material you plan to use for your living room. Like you, I have a new-to-me 40’s styled house and was planning to use this material for curtains either in my living room or bedroom. We have a gorgeous turquoise tile corner fireplace in the living room and I’d like to incorporate that color in hits throughout the room. I admire your style and your fearless approach to DIY projects! Looking forward to following your progress and taking notes!

  38. I, too, have used Overstock.com and when I see a piece such as a chair, tables or rugs I go to Overstock.com to see if I can duplicate it there. I found your site thru Atthepicketfence.com and made my way over to see the raised platform bed that I want to make.
