My Office:: The Planning Stage

I have been dreaming of different designs for my office for quite some time now, but I finally feel like it may be coming together in my mind.  It all started the other day when I saw this picture on Gorgeous Shiny Things

black room from gorgeous shiny things

I.LOVE.BLACK.ROOMS.  I’ve wanted for years now to do a black room in someone’s home, and as of yet, I’ve had no takers.  Well, phooey on the naysayers.  I’m just going to have to do it myself.

So that photo got the ball rolling and the creative juices flowing.  Black…yes.  But I want the black to simply be a backdrop for lots of white and bright and color.

I’m already planning an entire wall of storage, so those cabinets (which I plan to make myself…yikes!!) will be white.  But I need color…lots of it…perhaps starting with a great floral fabric.  Then I remembered a floral fabric that I really liked at JoAnn Fabrics a couple of months ago…

Hmmm…I actually don’t love it as much as I did the first time I saw it, but you get the idea.  I don’t want some fru-fru floral.  I want something punchy and graphic.  Perhaps something like this from Fabric.com…

Can you imagine it?  I can!

Then I want something a little special on the walls, rather than just solid painted walls.  Maybe something like this painted design that Jenny from Little Green Notebook did on the back of her dresser-turned-kitchen-island…

Can you imagine that detail painted on deep black walls used as a background for colorful artwork, framed bulletin boards, etc.?

So what do you think?  Do you think the black would be beautiful used as a backdrop for other light, bright, and colorful things?  Or do you think it would be dark and depressing?  I really think I’m going to go for it.

(Seriously, the more I look at that second fabric, the more I love it.)

  1. I love the idea. You will most definitely be able to pull it off.

I have black walls on the lower half of my hall bathroom and black walls inside the board and batten walls in my office. Neither room looks dark since I have it paired with lots of white and other fun colors. I can't wait to see what you do with it!!

  2. I think it is a great idea and you could use chalk board paint so that you could write inspirations on the wall and notes or such and then just take it off. Just a thought!

  3. Oh la la! Loving the inspiration. Go for it!! Also, thanks for coming by and showing my newborn blog some love.

  4. Black….I love black, but have never thought of it as a wall color, but I do have deep green on two of my 4 kitchen walls. I faux finished it and love it!!! I say go for it! If you don't like it, you can always repaint it. What's a few extra hours of work when you are trying to get "just" the right look for a bedroom that you will love? I write a mom blog http://www.BlogWithMom.com and also sell scentsy candles at http://BlogWithMom.scentsy.us I am finding myself working "way too hard" to match up the warmers / plug ins that I'm purchasing for my home. Will my selections "Really" matter, as long as the ones I choose are the ones that I personally like? For example, I love the "Tiki Warmer," but I don't have anything like totem pole decor in my living room….LOL!!

  5. OK at first I was going to say NO KRISTI NO…. but LOVE the idea of JUST a backdrop in black and then make it light and bright with the white cabinets and punches of colore in the fabric. I SAY GO FOR IT!!!!

  6. I think using black in the office is a fabulous idea!! 😀 If anyone can pull it off, it is you!

  7. I want black walls too!!! I haven't done a whole room yet, but I did do one wall that is my "art gallery" of my daughters' art work. The colors from their paintings stand out fabulously against the black backdrop. I love it when I see rooms done with black walls, can't wait to see yours!!

  8. I love the idea for the black walls! If anyone could do it, it would be you! Its a great plan, I can't wait to see the outcome.
I also want to thank you for the tutorial on the tufted headboard, I made an tufted ottoman following your tutorial. I am going to be posting it today, I hope you stop by later to check it out. Thanks again for your amazing inspirations!
