Paint Color: Should I Paint All Of My Bedrooms Red For Consistency?

by Anonymous

I just bought a townhouse, and all of the walls are a tan color. I have all the bedrooms on the top level, and I would like to paint mine red. Should I paint all of the rooms red for consistency? I do want to sell at some point, but I think if all of the rooms were different colors it may be hard. The rooms are unfurnished at this point, and my main room will have black furniture.

Answer:

Red is absolutely my favorite color, and when it comes to decorating, there are fewer things I love more than a dark red bedroom.

However, it's important to keep in mind that when it comes to using red, a little goes a long way.

Red is the color that has the greatest physiological effects on the human body. Red has been shown to raise the heart rate, increase appetite, and stimulate conversation. There is a very good reason that red is often associated with passion.

I would definitely suggest that you keep the red walls to one room only. I'm afraid that if you paint all of the bedrooms red, it will be too overpowering...not only for you, but for your visitors, and definitely for future buyers if/when you choose to sell you home.

It is also worth noting that red is the most saturated of all colors. Therefore, it is the hardest color to paint with, and the hardest color to cover when painting over it. When painting with red, proper preparation of the walls is key. Before painting, it is absolutely imperative that you use a good quality primer tinted as closely to your paint color as possible. DO NOT skip this step, or your results will be very disappointing.

Happy decorating!
