I’ve made a little progress on Project #3, the Hand Painted Family Sign, which will hang over the upholstered back of the banquette seat.
I was first inspired to make a hand painted sign when I saw this one on The Lettered Cottage a few months back.

I love the lettering on the sign, as well as the configuration of the main sign with a little sign connected underneath.
I knew I wanted my sign to be a family name sign, so I started scouring different online stores to find inspiration. I came across several online stores that sell custom family signs, and one of my favorites was Rumplestreet Boutique.

Those are great (and would make terrific gifts!), but for my particular project, I was wanting something a little more streamlined.
Then I came across this:
Unfortunately, I have no idea where I found this. If you know the source, please let me know!!
I really love that top part with the initial and the little flourishes around it. So I decided to combine the ideas: The initial with the flourishes, the streamlined lettering, and the two signs attached with little chain.
The only thing I’ve done so far is use my Paint Shop Pro program on my computer to design the sign. Here’s what it’ll look like:

The big sign will be 30″w x 10″h, and the little sign is about 20″w x 3″h.
Edit: I had someone inquire about the fonts I used, so just in case anyone else wants that info, here it is:
The “L” at the top is Chopin Script, which I downloaded from Font Space.
The “established 2002″ is in Gabriola, which I italicized. I think this font is standard with Windows 7.
The “The Linauers” part is in AngsanaUPC, which I used in bold. I believe this also comes standard with Windows 7, but can be downloaded.
(I absolutely love fonts, so I lose track of those which come standard with my operating system, and those which I’ve downloaded, but I love to browse sites like Font Space and Dafont.
I don’t really have any idea how I’m going to use the paint colors exactly, but these are the colors I bought.

I also have two leftover wall colors–both the new wall color (rich cream), and the previous wall color that was a more intense yellow (I forgot the name).
I probably won’t use all of these colors, but it’s good to have them on hand for other projects as well.
By the way…if you want to purchase paint for a small project, but don’t want to spend $20+ on a gallon or $12+ on a quart, the little Behr sample pots from Home Depot are a perfect size. They’re $3.99 each, and it’s 7.25 ounces. And the great thing is that you can have it mixed in any of Behr’s hundreds of colors.
Hopefully I will have a finished sign to show you tomorrow or Friday! Have a great day!

If you want a simple and easy way to do these type of signs later on, you can get a piece of wood and paint it, and then apply a vinyl decal on it. http://www.etsy.com has several vinyl decals in various colors/sayings/themes, etc. You could even get your name done on several of the custom ones. Just for future reference! (Painting letters perfect & even isnt easy!)
Thanks! I had considered that. But I really, really want this to have a hand painted look. And I wanted to do it as cheap as possible. The Lettered Cottage sign is hand painted, and I just love that look. I think I can do it. We'll see.
That sounds great, can't wait to see it when it's done!
I love these signs! I am considering doing one for above my kitchen cabinets. I think the decals might be the way for me to go!
I’ve just recently discovered DIY blogsites and am having a ball looking at all the awesome projects.
You have some awesome ideas. You did a wonderful job on your sign.
