The One That Got Away:: A Tale Of Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda

I got absolutely nothing done on my condo this weekend. Quite unapologetically, I sat on my hind end and did nothing constructive all weekend. I played around on my new computer a bit, watched some t.v. with my hubby, and continued sorting through old photographs.

And that’s when I came across this project.

Any interior decorator who is at all honest with himself/herself, and with you, will freely admit that any new project is generally approached with some variation of a particular thought in mind…What will this do for my portfolio? It’s true. For obvious reasons, we enjoy having dramatic before and afters to show off on our websites for potential future clients…and for our own enjoyment. After all, we pour our heart and soul into these projects. Of course we want to show them off!

So when I started this project, I knew it had TREMENDOUS potential to wind up at the top of the portfolio list on my website. After all, the “before” was quite outdated, and the client had a really reasonable budget.

The problem? Scheduling conflicts. She was absolutely one of the busiest people I’ve ever met. Between her incredibly demanding job and busy family life, the room was pushed to the back burner. The result? A room well on its way to being one of my very favorite “afters”, but lacking the finishing touches–lamps, accessories, small accent furniture, etc.

This is definitely the one that got away.

Here’s a look at the before and afters that I DO have. Sadly, when I took these pictures with my cheap point-and-click camera, I had no idea that these would be the last pics I would take of this project, so I took absolutely no time to straighten bedding, fluff pillows, or arrange the draperies. How sad.

This is the painting that I had in mind for this area. I used my handy dandy little photo editing program to add it to the wall, and of course, I would have put it in a beautiful frame. Oh well.

It makes me sad to see how close to finishing we were. And those walls were, and are still, one of the things I’m the proudest of. It took many, many hours for me and my wonderful assistant (hi, Mom!) to finish those walls, and I LOVED the outcome.

Maybe one of these days, I’ll get the opportunity to finish this room. Until then, I’ll just have to picture in my mind what could have been.

I remember this room well. The walls were gorgeous! The pictures definitely don't do it justice. And it is a shame that for some reason the light coming in the window gives off such a blue reflection on the wall. The furniture and bedding were beautiful, too. What a shame that you and the owner never have been able to get together on scheduling for the finishing touches. It could be a real showplace. It was fun helping out.
