Virtual Room (re)Design:: Cassandra’s Colorful & Eclectic Dining Room

Cassandra contacted me needing assistance with her dining room. The challenges? The room is really large, oddly shaped with many entrances, and has an entire wall of windows and French doors.

Challenge accepted!

Cassandra’s taste is very eclectic. She likes bold, bright colors, modern touches, and a mix of patterns and textures. Here’s a look at the room we’re working with:

Incredible potential. And aren’t those windows wonderful!?

Here’s the plan I designed for her:

This design was so much fun to work on. And to make it even better, Cassandra was thrilled with my ideas. Here’s what she had to say:

“WOW!! I’ve been waiting on pins and needles to see your design & it was WELL worth the wait!! You hit it out of the park and completely GOT IT!! My husband is still reeling over the price of the drapery fabric 🙂 but I agree with you. It is by far the show stopper. I’m absolutely giddy about the ideas you’ve come up with and am your newest huge fan! I hope I can do it justice. I’ll be sure to keep you posted with progress pics. Thanks a million!”

Yeah…we won’t even talk about the price of the drapery fabric. It’s shocking, to say the least. But that’s why it’s so important to set a budget before you begin decorating a room rather than just wing it as you go along. If you have a firm budget, you’ll know where you can splurge!

It’s rewarding being able to do what I love every day…and get paid for it. But it’s even more so when I have a satisfied client. 🙂

I hope y’all have a great weekend!!

Update:

Cassandra’s dining room is finished! Here’s a peek at how it turned out…

  2. Love it!

One thing: I think the fabric pictured is the way more affordable ($10/yard) Garden Trellis by Paula Prass? I love Imperial Trellis (as does everyone), but the Paula Prass version is a great alternative.

  3. Holly, you're absolutely right. Yikes! I put the wrong one on. Good catch.

When I was searching for more cost-efficient alternatives for Imperial Trellis, I found the Paula Prass fabric and loved it. The problem is that it's quilting fabric, which means that it's a thin cotton (fine for small projects, pillows, etc., but not appropriate for draperies), and as most quilting fabrics are, it's only 44" wide.

I've changed the pics to reflect the REAL Imperial Trellis. Thanks for the catch!!

Oh, and the fabrics shown on the windows (both the mock up I did, and the room photo below) are the actual Imperial Trellis.

  4. What an incredible space (ah! the wondows alone!) I LOVE the designs you did. Thanks for visiting me at my blog too! Ann@HouseFinally

  5. Kristi, good point on the quilting fabric: I never thought about the width and thickness being an issue with drapes. That's why you're the real designer, and I'm just your blog follower. 🙂

Now I'll just go on dreaming about the day when the real Impreial Trellis can come live in my house and wipe the drool off my chin with your design…

  6. I found your blog through loaded web! I love your site. Nice to meet you. I sheila. I am a Gourmet Cupboard Distributor from Waco. Would you be interested in doing a banner exchange, I would love to add your site to my blog roll soon. Thanks

  7. Kristi, I couldn't resist commenting on your beautiful choices. I am an interior designer, and my line of fabrics csn be used for many home dec projects. However, I agree that for such large windows a heavier, larger pattern is in order. For a lighter window treatment, say in kids rooms, a shower curtain, etc., I have actually turned the 45" fabric sideways and using a couple different fabrics, made wide horizontal stripes. Very custom looking at a fraction of the cost.

The room is gorgeous and you rocked it. xoxo

  8. Paula, thanks for visiting! Yes, I've bookmarked your fabrics online, hoping that I can incorporate them into future projects on smaller items. The garden trellis fabric is gorgeous! It would be stunning on a pillow, duvet cover, cornice, a lined/interlined roman shade for a small window, a quilted throw…the possibilities are endless! 🙂

  9. Like everybody else, I love those windows! An Excellent design, but I was just wondering what happened to the little kids' table!

  10. Hopefully the little kids table can go live somewhere else. 🙂

My Virtual Room (re)Design clients fill out a very detailed questionnaire regarding their room and their style, and one of the questions is about what furniture absolutely must stay in the room. Cassandra didn't mention that the kids table needed to stay, or that it needed to be replaced with another kids table. So I didn't include it in the final design.

  11. I'm speechless, i love everything about the room including the designs and furniture. What a fantastic work you've done! Thanks a lot for sha ring!
