A Few Little Bedroom Details
I don’t have a big bedroom update today. I’m still trying to repair that wavy wall and get the rest of the trim finished. I hope to have a bigger update on that tomorrow. In the meantime, I do have some very small updates to share.
First, I’ve been looking for a fabric to go on the bench that I plan to use just inside the bedroom doors in the foyer. I think I’ve found the perfect one. After looking at several options, I’ve decided to go with this one from FabricGuru.com.

I decided on that one because it’s a fun pattern and it’s velvet. Y’all know how much I love velvet. And I like that it will bring the teal down to the bottom portion of the foyer. But that teal on the bench will then allow me to use colorful pillows on the bench to tie in with the pink in the closet and the orange in the bedroom. I doubt that I’ll stick with these particular pillows that I already have, but this is the general idea.

And then on the wall above, I plan to hang our “watercolor” chapel picture from our wedding day that I’ve used in this area for the last several years. It used to be on the main wall, so I’ll just move it over to this wall. This is the picture I’m talking about…

In other news, I have been looking for trim to use on the leading edge of my teal velvet drapery panels for the bedroom for months. I’m not even exaggerating. It’s been months. I don’t know if you’ve shopped for drapery trim lately, but it’s so expensive!! Every time I’d find one that I like, the total for the 18 yards that I need came to over $1000. I found a couple that were in the $700-$800 range, but even that seemed ridiculous to me. Y’all know me well enough to know that there’s no way I’d pay that for drapery trim.
So this past weekend, I sat down with my laptop and determined to search until I found something that would work. I’ve just had it in my mind all this time that I want trim on those draperies, and I wasn’t going to be satisfied with plain solid teal draperies against solid teal grasscloth walls. I wanted trim, and I was determined to find one.
Well, it took a couple of hours, but I finally came across this one from Luxe Fabric Co.…

I specifically wanted something in the orange/coral range to go with the headboard fabric and the area rug, and while this one was far from my first choice, I think it will work out perfectly. And the price was amazing at $7.85 per yard. It’s wider than I had hoped at 3.5″ wide, but when all of the other choices that I found were ridiculously expensive, I’m rather happy with this one. I think it’ll add just enough brightness to the edges of those drapery panels.
While I didn’t add trim to the drapery panels in the mockup, you can use your imagination to “see” what it will look like.

So all of the little details are coming together. I still need to find lamps for the bedside tables, and then decide on bedding to go with the headboard fabric.
The biggest decision I still need to make is about the dresser that will go opposite the headboard wall. It’s currently painted blue because it was in our previous bedroom, and that blue definitely won’t work in the new bedroom. I have no idea what color to paint this dresser. I don’t want more teal. Orange would be too much, I think. But painting a large piece of furniture cream or white goes against everything in me. 😀

I have no idea what kind of wood lies underneath the original factory finish, but I’m tempted to strip the whole thing and see if it’s a wood I can work with. If it’s something I can work with, a natural wood finish might be the best option.
UPDATE: I forgot to add that the light for the foyer was delivered, and it’s even prettier in person than I had expected! I can’t wait to get this installed!

Would painting the dresser a gold color look good, or would it be too much?
I’d be okay with some gold details, but I think an entire gold dresser might be a bit much, even for me. 😀
You might give Retiqui It a try on the dresser. You paint it on and then stain and seal to give it a wood look. I’ve seen some impressive results from DIYers, including “wood” paneling.
I’ve wanted to try that! I think that’s what I bought and tried on the doors in the back entry of the studio, but then went a different direction. I might even still have some. That might be easier than trying to strip the whole thing, especially since I don’t even know what I’d find underneath all those layers.
How about a lighter less saturated avocado-grey-green base then lightly distress/dirty with a coffee/tea stain, then highlight heavier with a gold accent? Not sure if the dresser is much too big of scale or it’s looks okay. Or just sound crazy. I see more green doing ok but in a less is more vs a whole dresser. Another alternate is painting/distressing it to be a similarly toned wood as the nightstands.
I’m better with funny shapes than color theory.
Just a couple thoughts for you to ponder… my first reaction on the bench when you originally posted it was that yes, it fits that space exactly- but I think it’s a few inches too long. Maybe it’s because it goes past the wainscoting, but it seems too large to me for the space. But I get it if you don’t want to redo it. Secondly, if you think the trim is too wide at 3.5” you could fold it around the edge of the drapery so that it’s the size you want.
I agree that the bench seems a little too long for the space. I wonder how hard it would be to shorten is a foot or so…
Terribly hard. She might as well start from scratch. Imho. Hubby made one for me, then tried cutting it down. Long story short, he completely made a new one, gave the original to our daughter.
I think the bench would look better in half. It would still serve the purpose too.
Love your site! I get so much inspiration here. If you are ever at a loss for a blog post, I’d love to see you do a quick tutorial on how you do your mockups. They are so helpful in visualizing what you are going for.
For the dresser – maybe the same light blue as the armchair? As for the bedding, ikea has a lot of solid colours that would go with your headboard.
Love how it’s coming along!
The design and color of the fabric for the bench are beautiful. If the bench was shorter it would look better. I don’t know how much time and effort that would take but you definitely have the skills to do that. I think one of the shades of green in the headboard fabric would be pretty for your dresser if you didn’t order your chair in green. I love the drapery trim but wonder if it’s too wide. I would want it an inch in from the leading edges and wouldn’t want it in the pleats, if you’re having pleats.
How about the green of the leaves in the headboard fabric for the dresser color?
I’d mimic the curtain pattern on the drawer fronts (or the whole dresser!). Maybe custom order a wallpaper? I am sure you could come up with something fantastic!
I like the idea of the green from the headboard, or alternatly a slightly darker color than the nightstands might look nice also. Stripping would be good, but that’s a lot of work for an unknown wood type under the paint.
Totally unrelated comment, but I’ve been thinking about the mirror you plan to hang across from the entry to the foyer for the bedroom. I just think that’s an odd place for a mirror. What if it were across from the closet? Just a thought. As for the trim on the drapes, I don’t think it’s needed, but why not make your own by using fabric cut on the bias. I’ve done this as trim on many projects, because actual trim was always out of my price range!
That trim is gorgeous–patience pays off!
