Bathroom Makeover Recap (Will I Meet My 20-Day Goal?)

When I started my bathroom makeover, I made it my goal to do the whole project, start to finish, in 20 working days.  I’m not talking about calendar days here, since I did go out of town for a few days, and I still have days when I can’t focus on DIY stuff because I have other responsibilities.  But I wanted to finish it in 20 actual working days.

I think I’m still on track to do that, but since I’m currently at the 14-day point, I need to really take inventory of the things I’ve done, and the things I still need to do.  I need to organize my time wisely, and have clear goals for each day.  Only six left.  I’m pretty sure I can do it.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

On Day 1…

I removed the old vinyl flooring…

…and installed new groutable peel-and-stick vinyl tiles.

On Day 2…

I made a new $35 wood countertop for my vanity out of cedar fence pickets to replace the old, stained laminate countertop.

On Day 3…

I started making new cabinet doors for my vanity.

On Day 4…

I finished up my new cabinet doors, and then I filled the cracks in my new countertop (at the very strong urging of my mom).  🙂

On Day 5…

I finished the vanity.  New cabinet doors…check.  New countertop…check.  A new coat of paint…check.  New drawer/door pulls…check.

On Day 6…

I removed that huge eyesore of a cabinet that was above the toilet.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled the bathroom door that the “professionals” did such a terrible job at installing.

On Day 7 and Day 8…

I installed the faux wood plank walls that cover the lower portion of the bathroom walls.

The process started right here

…and looked like this at the end of Day 8 — painted but not trimmed out.

On Day 9 and Day 10…

I focused on the upper portion of the walls.  First, I prepped the walls for painting without removing the wallpaper.

Then I primed and painted the walls, and added the trim to one side.

On Day 11…

I painted my bathtub and tub surround.

On Day 12, Day 13, and Day 14…

I took on the most labor-intensive project in this bathroom makeover — my mosaic tile framed mirror that I made out of wood yardsticks.

The first day was all about cutting the tiles, and then figuring out how I was going to make the vision in my head become reality (i.e., figuring out the construction of the frame).

On the second day, I finished up gluing the approximately 12 million tiles to the frame sections, and cut out the sections.  (I actually think it was more like 500 tiles, but towards the end, it sure felt like a whole lot more!!)

And then on the third day, I finished up the painting and grouting.

So that’s where my bathroom makeover stands right now.

What do I have left to do on this bathroom makeover?

  1. Hang the mirror over the vanity, and possibly come up with a solution for the light since I’m pretty sure there’s not enough clearance between the glass shades and the wall for the frame to fit.
  2. Finish up the trim on the faux wood plank wall on the vanity side of the room.  I’ve been waiting on this because it needed to be done after the mirror is hung.
  3. Finish up the trim and do some caulking around the bathtub.
  4. Make a shower curtain.
  5. Make some shelves to go over the toilet.
  6. Do more coats of polyurethane on the wood vanity countertop.
  7. Find or make some artwork for the wall opposite the vanity.
  8. Spray paint the vent cover that goes on the ceiling.
  9. Find or make something to give color to the floor.  A rug?  A floor cloth?  It just needs something.
  10. Install towel racks.
  11. Finish the door — install the rest of the trim, paint the door, and install a new door knob.
  12. Paint touch ups.

I think that’s it!  And wow.  Now I have just the slightest twinge of doubt creeping in that I’ll get it finished by my 2o-day goal.  But I’m going to try my hardest!!

Thanks for following along with my bathroom makeover, and for all of your encouraging and supportive comments and your awesome suggestions!!  Sharing it with you day by day has really helped keep me on track and stay focused on the end goal.

After I finish up this room, I’ll either be moving on to my bedroom or to the living room.  Matt wants me to do the living room.  I want to do the bedroom.  If you have an opinion on which room you’d like to see me tackle next, please share!

I hope y’all have a great weekend!  🙂

  1. You, my dear, are a Rock Star! Look at all you’ve done! Woot-to-the-Woo. I can’t wait to see the final project. I’m doing a kitchen renovation, but it will take me longer than 20 days. And to think, I only wanted the wallpaper down.

  2. Wow, you are an inspiration! I vote living room next, simply because we’re moving in a month and I know I will get tons of great ideas from you!

  3. Please do your living room! I am working on mine and am totally hitting a dead end with how much pattern and color to have/not have. I know watching you update yours will definitely be the inspiration I need. Keep going girl!!! 😀

  4. I vote for the living room. I’m guessing a person entering your home will see the living room before they see the master bedroom. Go for the visual impact a living room reno will generate.

  5. I found you around the first of the year and have followed your bathroom remodel intently. On the days you do not have a new post I look at some of your galleries. It is so refreshing to see someone who has great design talent, does each project “the right way,” and can explain the process in an interesting and entertaining way. Needless to say, I’ve gotten so much inspiration from you, so Thank you!
I definitely believe you can finish up in 6 more days and can’t wait to see your next project!

I definitely believe you can finish up in 6 more days and can’t wait to see your next project!

  7. You have accomplished a lot in 12 days of hard work! Give yourself a pat on the back. Your list seems long but several of those projects won’t take that long so you should be able to accomplish your goal quite easily – you are amazing! Wall art? How about some word art (quick and simple) or some simple colorful pressed flowers you can frame? I would keep the floor rug simple – maybe in teal, yellow or a combo of both. As far as your next project, I would do the room that needs the most work and get it out of the way and leave the ‘easier’ room for last. Again, YOU ARE AMAZING!

    1. Ha ha ha! Sorry about my miscalculation of the days. You’ve accomplished a lot in 14 days with 6 to go. I know you can do it.

  8. You can do this!!! Whatever the wall art is it needs to bring the teal, yellow, and white together (in my humble opinion.) 🙂 I vote for the living room next.

  9. Ha! I found you through Pinterest and started looking at your bathroom redo. I got to this page and thought – wait, there is no next button. Then I realized this is now. Love your work! I live in Alaska. The sidewalk threw me off because we have a ton of snow still.

  10. I love your bathroom cabinet. It’s my favorite do-over in this room so far. It’s just gorgeous! I cannot believe the transformation of it.
The whole room is looking beautiful.

  11. You are totally awesome and I do want to take you home for 24hrs. for ideas or 1 wk. to tackle a project. Heck I just want to be you!! Keep it up and may God give you the strength that you need to keep going.

  12. I vote for the bedroom. You are the one doing the work, and doing what you want when you want it helps with inspiration, and finishing the job. 🙂

  13. So far, the living room has all the votes. Let me add another. However, I want to see the bedroom most because that’s my next project. I’m so scared…

  14. I loved seeing the progression here all at one time. Last week sometime I actually made my husband sit while I clicked through the different posts so I could brag on you to him. And yes…he was pretty impressed. I love the yellow of the title on the mirror frame. What a terrific pop of color.
I vote that you do which ever room will be the quickest for you to do. After a hard project like this one…you need an easy one.

  15. I have a little suggestion. LED lighting strips might be better overhead, not to mention they use about 70% less energy than the current fixture you have right now.
Another suggestion is a lighted magnification mirror that swings out on an arm. 🙂

  16. I agree with Diane. Redo whichever room will be the easiest next. You deserve a break before doing your next project unless you just feel like you are on a roll. How did you learn all of these things that you have done? Did someone teach you to use the power tools? Is someone you know a DIYer and you watched and learned? Just curious. My next project is to tear out the carpet and recarpet the living room. It won’t be hard because carpet tacks were used…so no stretching involved.

  17. I vote for the bedroom! I have been dying to see you complete it since your very first post with the closets on the side of the bed and the grass cloth on the wall. What I see in my head is gorgeous, so I can’t wait to see it all finished!

  18. I too vote for the bedroom! I already have my living room done and the bedroom is one of the rooms we still have left to do and could really use the inspiration. Thanks so much for sharing all of your great ideas with us and giving us such clear and understandable instructions!

  19. I love your decorating style…you have such an eye for detail and color combinations!
    I can’t get over that mirror…you rock!!

My vote is for the living room. You spend more time in there anyway and most time spent in the bedroom involves closed eyes! Ha!

Whatever you decide, I can’t wait!!
    Bless you!!

  20. This is so awesome! We are having a 60 year old lakehouse redone (2 hours away) so cannot do much of it ourselves anyway, but our third bathroom we did not gut. it could use some help. I had no idea you could paint an old tub. yours looks brand new and awesome. i will go to the tutorial and see how! and where on earth did you get the idea for a tile frame for mirror? did you dream it up? and making the “tiles” out of yardsticks? and i guess by the pix it looks like you painted them after they were all put together? awesome! it’s all coming together just beautifully. you are so talented! and I learned so many things, like i didn’t know they made peel and stick tiles. i am totally impressed and encouraged to do something myself! thanks so much for sharing!!

  21. It. Is. Awesome! And now, I have 2 bathroom counter tops on my ‘hunny do’ list. 😉 Question, did you stay with the Golden Oak stain, or did you go darker? It seems a little warmer that golden, but that could be the cedar. I want to duplicate it just the way you did it for my country look. 😉 Great Job!!!
