Entryway Progress — The Floral Wallpaper Mural Is Up!
I got the rest of the floral wallpaper mural installed in the entryway, and I have to say, this is my absolute favorite. I almost…almost…wish that I had found this mural back when I was working on my studio because it would have been perfect for that long wall in my studio. But I’m very happy with this mural being in the entryway of our home.
This is the Paradise Tropical wall mural from Anthropologie (affiliate link). Here’s how it turned out…

I hate that I had to cut off almost seven feet of the mural in order to make it fit on this wall, though. The whole thing is stunning. But I just don’t have a 20-foot wall anywhere in our house, so this was the next best thing.

Now I need to figure out what to do about the wall sconce shades. Obviously, the current green is too bright. What I really want are brushed gold metal shades, but I can’t find any that are the right size and shape. I might end up having to make some new ones. But for now, I’d rather look at bright green shades than bare LED bulbs.

Perhaps I need smaller, simpler wall sconces altogether. Instead of sconces with three lights, I might need to get sconces with one light. I’ll have to think about that. I’m open to either option — either new shades for these sconces or new single-bulb sconces.

Anyway, I’ll decide that later. I haven’t given up my search for new shades just yet, and I’m not quite ready to give up on a DIY option, either.

I’m also not quite sure about the console table. I thought the one I have might cover up too much of the mural for my taste, but once it was back in place, I really liked how it looked (except for the one drawer that’s missing the trim and needs to be repaired 😀 ). The wall is over 12 feet wide, so I do think it needs something weighty on that wall. I might keep my eye open for something new (either to buy or to build), but for now, I’m pleased with how this one looks.

I actually don’t mind losing the part of the mural that is covered by the console table.

I do want to repaint the front door now, though. The teal door made sense when the entryway wall was the same color. But now that I no longer have the teal entryway wall, the teal front door doesn’t really make sense. I think a white front door would look better so it’s not pulling attention away from the mural.

Now that the mural is up and the console table and sconces are in place, I do think I need something on the wall between the sconces. Unfortunately, whatever I put there is going to cover up those two reddish pink flowers in the middle. But I think it looks incomplete without something on the wall between the sconces.

I think a simple, round, wood-framed mirror would be my preference.

I have all kinds of mirrors on hand, but most of them are all tall rectangles, arched top mirrors, etc. The only one I had that fit this area is the sunburst mirror. I think it’s too busy for this wall, but since it’s the only round-ish mirror I have, I put it there just to get an idea of what a round mirror would look like there. This one is 37 inches in diameter, so you can see that a round mirror that size would cover up both of those center reddish-pink flowers.

I’m disappointed about that, but there was nothing I could do about it. I raised the mural up as high as I could without cutting off those top yellow flowers on the left and the big pink flower on the right. At least I still have that other reddish-pink flower that will show between a round mirror and the sconce on the right.
Anyway, it’s still a work in progress, but at least the mural is up, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it looks. I need to get the bird pictures hung on the wall in the living room, and then add a few more finishing touches. Once that’s done, I’ll show you the whole room with its new look.

I wonder if instead of putting something on the wall that you put something tall and sculptural on the console. Visually it will balance the blank area between the sconces but the 3D part of it would allow the mural to be seen from different angles. A large floral arangement might work too.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Then it could also be seasonal.
My thought exactly.
I’m thinking the same thing. I hate for you to lose those pretty flowers under a mirror.
Me too…I would want to see as much as that mural as possible. It is just stunning. I’m a bit disappointed that the console covers so much.
Exactly what l was thinking!
Maybe smaller sconce lamps.
I totally agree.
How about a wide rectangle arch topped mirror just leaned against the wall, one short enough that it won’t cover up the pink flowers. Personally, I like mirrors that are leaned against walls vs. being hung above the table.
Also, try nixing the baskets, I feel like they give the bottom half of the console table too much weight.
Agree! No need for the baskets!
Instead of sconces, I would put a lamp on each end of the console. A low wide bowl or other piece of décor in-between the lamps might be sufficient for the balance you are looking for and won’t cover up your mural.
No can do, she already cut a hole in the wallpaper for the sconce bases!
how about a cluster of smaller mirrors as to not completely cover up the floral pattern?
maybe 6 or 9 round ones? Also for your sconce shades, perhaps consider making them yourself from that same material you used in the kitchen cupboards, where the glass was? It’s a thought? Love that mural!
I think larger table lamps with white shades. It would actually highlight the mural. Then, you wouldn’t need to feel like you’ve got to have some type of artwork as the mural is the artwork. It should stand on its own but be framed.
I wouldn’t leave your door white. I vote for a very soft pink. While I know that that’s not necessarily a guy, color it was so highlight that beautiful set of flowers
in the middle.
Just some thoughts that came to mind: Lamp shades can be recovered with all kinds of material or napkins (decoupaged, etc.) or painted any color you choose if you stay w/the ones you have. Might be fun to play with the color(s) on the ones you have before buying new ones. A mirror with lots of ironwork surrounding it would allow more of the mural to show through and could be circular or free form. LOVE that mural, absolutely STUNNING! Great choice and what an entryway it makes!
Why not a small diameter mirror like the sunburst, but with open wire work around the mirror so the flowers will show thru?
Very easy to recover to shades with very little fabric in exactly the color you want. Or perhaps could paint them. How often do you actually turn them on?
The console looks great.
Not so sure about the baskets.
The mural is gorgeous! I think the green shades look fine but they may be too bright in person. Can you spray paint them? Have you considered a larger version of the sun burst mirrors you hung over your headboard? You would see some of the mural between the rays. I would remove the baskets from the console table to lighten it up. Is it possible to remove the lower drawers?
If I use these shades, I’d rather recover them with different fabric instead of spray painting them. I don’t think it’s possible to remove the lower drawers, but I can remove the baskets.
Looking at the photos again this morning I had the thought that you could replace the console table with a bench as long or a bit longer than the table with a thick upholstered cushion on top, no skirt. I don’t think you would need a mirror or any other artwork above a bench. Perhaps you could place your two square benches that flanked the console there with a board on top to visualize what that would look like. Maybe you could place a narrow sofa table with drawers behind your sofa if you need a place to set or hide things as you walk in the door.
The mural is beautiful. I personally feel like the three shades on each sconce is too busy for that mural. If you plan to stick with sconces, I think white shades on single bulb sconces would look great and not detract from the mural. Same with lamps with white shades on either end of the console table.
What about an airer sunburst mirror that will allow more of the paper to show. https://www.onekingslane.com/p-thayer-sunburst-wall-mirror-P112711527?sku=112711527&gclsrc=aw.ds&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=google-okl–comarketing&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21599073502&gbraid=0AAAAADl7f7mCGq5Cgz6dpmupYd-q406Xx&gclid=CjwKCAjw1tLOBhAMEiwAiPkRHpa_C-728Hn36Dmd67VZO5CVbAvjf5EaXnypfWCvi_H7Eott-VSeExoCynIQAvD_BwE
I love love love the green shades on the sconces leave them and I also like your teal door-I would keep both. The console reads country casual and the rest of the room reads drama and I’m here for it. The mural is stunning, does it go up like wallpaper with paste? I’m getting some ideas, thanks.
Welcome back – the mural is stunning. I think a narrow horizontal mirror would be better than round or vertical rectangle. One that is just enough to check the face before walking out the door. Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/CAVINHOME-Decorative-Vertical-Horizontal-Entryway/dp/B0G6MTFDM1/ref=sr_1_34?crid=16U2PO7XY8FE9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.fSj30RHIa0ghxZyqA3BVBE7ggM5e6sUIQANLFuNGPXimYEpqxgfrMtyUZg4iBQLWiyBjhoto-sB2xU7S6Lil2mnAdQW-7t3VoEdFnMaVg3A.PrRuJPaZJwZ57uO206Z49Dtxhre5YHT0hCfw-f1CZKQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=long%2Bhorizontal%2Bmirror&qid=1775576926&s=home-garden&sprefix=long%2Bhorizontal%2Bmirror%2Cgarden%2C182&sr=1-34&xpid=O1sm_irD2VGtR&th=1
There’s a teardrop shape option of the mirror I linked that would also look nice. Maybe like a leaf.
Yvonne, this is gorgeous, and just the thing I’m looking for in my bedroom! Thanks for posting…ps, any idea how much it weighs? I couldn’t find that info…
Hi Cathy – It is very pretty! The long one weighs 20.9 lbs according to the listing in the Measurements section in Production Information. 🙂
I’m thinking about buying one for myself!
That’s beautiful! I love it!
For the sconce shades…what about covering the existing ones in fabric or even the wallpaper mural? It might look horrible, but it might be good.
If you look for different sconces, you may want to consider something singular so that it doesn’t extend any farther to the left like the 3-shade ones do now. They seem a little too near the edge of the console. Maybe even try a swing arm so that you can angle it towards the middle and also extend farther out from the wall for more dimension. If it was me, however, I’d simply have a large lamp on the console.
As for the mirror, I feel your pain about the flowers in the middle! I like someone’s suggestion of something large and sculptural set slightly to one side (a big urn with branches?) but I also think the gold mirror you show is not bad at all.
Have fun playing with it. It will come together.
Also, thinking outside the box – could you be happy with a piece of furniture that is taller, rather than wide, that would fit between the sconces? Something a little leggy that’s tall enough to balance with the sconces but not too tall to cover the pink flowers. You could then place a chair to one side which could be used for added seating in the living room.
Something along the lines of this but not black:
https://www.wayfair.com/home/pdp/junming-black-solid-woodglass-display-cases-jfmi1120.html
One more thought. Your present sconces are very tall. Is it possible that you’re feeling the need to put something on the wall because the height of the sconces is suggesting you need to fill more space?
Try photoshopping in sconces that are not so tall or are pointing down and you may feel differently about the need to hang a mirror or other item.
Agree, the baskets look out of place. Mural is interesting & love the colors
Love the way it looks! Could you do the rest of the wall around the door with the wallpaper you have left? Also, what about just an empty wooden frame or several frames (and I love that console on that wall!) so you’re still seeing the mural through it?
Cover the sconce shades in leftover wallpaper.
It’s a beautiful mural, but I’m confused about something….on one hand you cut it to get just the right foliage placement but now you want to cover it with mirrors and such. You say you “need something between the sconces.” Well, you HAVE something there—2 beautiful flowers! And if you decide on covering them with a mirror then find the perfect replacement sconces, that could throw everything off. I would take a deep breath, hunt for sconces or shades and let the mural shine. I would however paint or cover the light switch with the paper to make it blend in.
I’m also surprised you’re considering white for the door🧐
I do plan on painting the light switch cover so that it’s camouflaged. As far as the door, the other doors in the area are white, so a white door here will just blend in with the others. That will just leave the music room doors that are teal, and since they’re special doors, I think it will look just right for those to be the only teal doors.
That mural is gorgeous!
Just beautiful! I like the shades on the sconces the way they are, but you could tone them down a bit with tea water or diluted wood stain or some such; or rub N buff if you want gold?? Then on the console, replace the elephant (or add next to the elephant) tall chunky candlesticks. No need to hang anything on the wall.
Frosted glass sconces would look beautiful there. It would be a softer look than ones with white shades. I’m in agreement with removing the baskets, the look isn’t needed and it would brighten and lighten it up on the bottom. Painting the door a pinkish color is a nice idea, and it’s a small enough area where it would hopefully not bother Matt too much.
How about an empty gold frame on the wall to “frame” the flowers already on the mural? Would that give you the look of artwork without covering up the mural? I like the wood tone of the console table against that backdrop and that it covers up the so-so palm frond behind it. I would vote for a simpler single light sconce since the mural is so busy. Looks beautiful!
Hi there,
I love the mural. The way you placed the pink flowers is amazing! I would leave it as it is and not covering it. The lampshades need to be change like you mentioned. The door could be white or the same pink from your curtains or the flowers might work too. The wall is really the artwork if you ask me.
Here’s what I Invision: instead of the console, a very long low bench with an upholstered seat and some coordinating throw pillows to accentuate the colors in the mural, and NOTHING on the wall! That mural IS the artwork – give it all the attention! 😀
Lori, I also thought a bench might look great there.
The idea of a long bench also crossed my mind. It would have to have storage, though. I do actually use this console as storage, so I don’t want to lose that.
Sofa table with drawers behind your sofa would give you front door storage, maybe?
I dont care for the baskets on console now either. But thats just me. I’m thinking you just need a tall sculpture of some kind in center of console to fill the middle without a mirror on the wall. Just my 2 cents worth here 😁😁Mural is stunning and should be the show stopper. ☺️
I thought of many of the ideas already posted. Really great ideas. Since you plan to redo the kitchen maybe “buy” the sconces from there? I once used some cylindrical metal candle holders and diy-ed them into lamp shades. They were sortnof like this. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Maison-Concepts-Christmas-Black-Metal-Star-Cut-Out-Candle-Holder-Set-Of-3-5L-X-5W-X-4H/5067892134
Beautiful! These very cool sconces are on sale and may work. They seem flower inspired. https://www.ballarddesigns.com/nia-3-light-ceramic-sconce/sale/category/lighting/669820?uniqueId=669820&isNewProduct=false&newItemBadge=false&hideNewTagFromPLP=false
Love the mural. A smaller console maybe. Or two lamps on the console. Less is more with such a beautiful mural. I think all the other takes away from the mural. Definitely not a mirror to cover any of the mural.
Try a tall object, like a vase, on the left side of the console and see how that works. I don’t think you need something on the wall between the sconces. I think you can do a large scale vignette on the console and it will look right. I’d also like to see something with more leg to it and less chonky on the bottom of the console. Maybe even just removing the baskets? But I really like the idea of the current console with the shelf removed and just a smidge lighter legs. It doesn’t need to be quite so heavy now that the mural has so much weight to it. My 0.02! 🙂
If you ask me. I don’t think you should put a mirror in between the wall sconces. I think the mural itself it’s the center of attention and if you put a mirror you are going to take that away from the mural. That mural it’s gorgeous. I have never seen something that pretty before.
What about a chunky, not too tall, vase in the middle? It would sort of give the illusion of the flowers coming out of the vase?
1. Love the console since wood tones match areas in the mural.
2. Definitely play around with covering or painting the shades.
3. The bottom baskets seem lacking. I think solid baskets across would anchor the bottom better or no baskets at all. Currently presenting as skimpy. Reminds me of the way some reno programs stage a pantry with space between items. Could push baskets together and add something to the ends that’s not a basket. Do you like large cut glass bowls or plates?
4. The door seems to match areas in the mural. I would not re-paint it.
5. Chair in the corner?
6. Instead of a mirror, I can visualize some brass or gold tone birds or butterflies flitting around on the wall over the console.
I love the idea in item 6. of your comment, Crystal! I can imagine those butterflies easily in my mind’s eye! Fun and pretty!
Hi, Kristi,
What would you think about spray painting the shades of the sconces gold? I know there are some terrific gold spray paints out there that are very realistic. Just an idea. Also, if you use a round mirror with a frosted beveled edge, you would still see some of the pink flowers through the edging.
Love watching everything you do!!!
I think anything in the middle of the sconces covers the beautiful pink flowers and defeats the purpose of the mural!!
What about hanging a lovely empty frame–something that would feature those pink flowers rather than covering them up?
Maybe you’ll be able to use the leftover pieces of the mural in your workshop shed.
I love that idea! I definitely want to find a place to use it. The remaining portion is almost seven feet wide! I can’t let that go to waste.
For the shades, how about putting some stain on them that would deepen the green to a more mossy color – maybe a brown stain or wash of paint/dye? Or if you want gold (which I don’t think I would want) just cover them with craft paper or fabric. I don’t think you need to hang something on the wall, maybe just a vase or sculpture sitting on the console, centered between the sconces. I wouldn’t cover the wallpaper any further than the sconces. It’s a big piece of art! Would you hang something on an art print? No, you wouldn’t!
I love the mural and think you chose a well when having to cut it to size. How about a sconce like these or a toned down version of these that might blend in more? https://www.1800lighting.com/capital-lighting-fixture-company-eden-13-inch-wall-sconce-4463862.html
I agree with Susan and Celeste…. don’t cover the beautiful mural with a mirror just to have something on the wall…. something tall and/or sculptural is an excellent place to start. Also, try without the baskets just to see how it looks?
Your table is the same color as some of the leaves in the mural, so it does go with it pretty well, I think.
Beautiful!
What are your thoughts about placing something larger/taller on your console table? Perhaps then you wouldn’t need to hang anything on the wall 🙂
LOVE the mural. I think you definitely need to switch the sconces first to something simpler, and then see if the middle needs something. Like right now the sconces are so bold and obviously there that the space in the middle demands something. But if you went with sconces that were much more subtle, that center may not be so demanding.
Would you consider glass shades on the sconces? I love the idea of glass to give a little shine/sparkle without competing. Like
I would love something like this –
https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/house-of-hampton-acree-iron-armed-wall-sconce-with-tulip-glass-lampshade-w113915259.html?piid=307357390
OR – I bet you could make something like this (feels similar to the closet light) –
https://www.fergusonhome.com/product/summary/948928?uid=5209010&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=1711171807&utm_content=67978872638&utm_term=&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=1711171807&gclid=CjwKCAjw1tLOBhAMEiwAiPkRHtfbXJSTtRqA4fHj4MnL4tLIiirO8CZK0FWZCvHlQnSfXXNiw9C8ihoCUngQAvD_BwE
One of those more simple options may blend in more seamlessly with the mural, and then the mural can be the star without any mirror or art or anything else. I took a quick look around at mural walls and it seems a lot of them don’t have art in the center, but they also don’t have bold sconces.
I cannot copy the link for some ridiculous reason, but search Home Depot for the YUYI 2-light gold bionic leaf wall sconces. They would look outstanding on the mural. Also, why not just add a pretty gold empty frame to “frame” the pink flowers?
Absolutely stunning, amazing piece as people enter your home. Could you use some of the mural you didn’t use to make lamp shades?
I would love to see what the buffet looks like WITHOUT the baskets. In my opinion, you shouldn’t hang anything on this beautiful wall. I get what you mean about wanting something there between the sconces. I know others have mentioned a sculpture, and I could see you making something. Maybe even something like this, although it could be larger for your space. Just another suggestion to add to the mix. https://www.amazon.com/CECKQUE-Minimalist-Decorative-Decorations-Decoration/dp/B0D91JR5QP/ref=sr_1_32?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.5yFl0qeRELWuHcdz5by4PKQMvlXl8v144VjTyecFuoD6_q8vrPTsX_0Ymvk62dbIHh0mr8KvHQb5kY4Hb7f52X503x5RBrNp3E3tnTHsXGBbhmNnEbKRMm5IjOrFYfJgbYLFnl1fdvAvvF6NEC9URVwXU0LAL3AJEPOdFTSeH49rdGHOmAi6Os6aO_oOSX_GEGDjogYt9lOj7onZTWAsi7BkEuMyu6RIPcPkRZzdlAppV6VsYnsXiHsC54DM6Gv42f56VZkNeb2i4GhvhTAP5fXD50feuJjlpguyb9Wfo8c.NTGwt7mO7bvAgNCVSO67ZgdooYqwq6rTHi-lymzyziA&dib_tag=se&keywords=white%2Bsculpture&qid=1775590816&sr=8-32&th=1
I too don’t think she needs to hang anything. I think you have come up with a great solution.
The wallpaper is stunning! I like that shade of green against the wallpaper; any other shade of green would blend into the wallpaper.
What about just a single large bowl or basket for the entry table so that you don’t have cover the pink flowers up? You know the old adage of less is more.
It looks like there is some teal in the mural, so how about covering the shades with some of your teal grasscloth? I think the teal door looks fine next to the mural.
I would love a large, low. very full, live plant on the console between the sconces (no mirror).
Can you use some of the leftover mural to cover those shades?
I recommend a darker shade of natural wood on the buffet and ditch the baskets. Love the mural!
Why did you put up the mural? Because you love it. I’m definitely on the “don’t cover up what you love” team. To me, the mural carries the wall and doesn’t need any furniture in front of it. Maybe a low bench, or even a see-through acrylic piece of furniture could work, though.
I really don’t think you need anything on the wall. The beautiful wall paper speaks for itself.
Just place a bench in front of the wall. Cover a cushion in velvet.
Your over thinking.
Agree with the comments to remove the baskets as they added a very rustic touch to a wonderfully complex mural. It looks fabulous. What about tweaking the shades so that they are a soft, teal or green that sort of blends in with the mural background. And would the two arched mirrors that you originally had again work on the sides of the console. That would leave the large flowers in the center intact. It came out, simply stunning.
I agree the three-light green sconces are competing. Perhaps if you could find a translucent glass/paper shade they could work. I would also put a mirror to the right of your door on the white wall. One of the arched mirrors you had on the wall before might be perfect. (I like having a mirror close to the door to check myself.) And I agree about changing the door color but can’t decide on a color. I love the console. I visualize a long, low, fluidly designed, glass or crystal bowl or ” canoe shape” as a statement piece. Do you know any fused glass artists that you could take a class with and pick out the glass and have them slump it into a mold you like? I think you could design something that would be perfect.
I think you should move your hot pink settee on this wall.
Wow. Just, wow!
This very well may be my favorite thing you’ve ever done in your home.
Stunning.
Love the stained console table, although I’m wondering if a slightly darker stain would enhance the look?
What about some birds like you have in your bedroom around the flowers in the center.
No mirror. Let it rest.
