The Four Area Rugs I Ordered For The Bedroom (And We Have A Very Clear Winner!!)

I’ve had such a hard time picking out an area rug to go in our new bedroom, but I’ve finally found a winner! A couple of weeks ago, I shared several possibilities that I had found on Amazon, and from those, I ordered three plus one more that I thought might work.

As several of you suggested, this time around I ordered much smaller sizes to test out. Now that I’ve found the winner, I’ll return all four of these rugs, and then order the 9 x 12 version of the one I like. But I’ll show you all four that I ordered, and I’ll show you in the order that they arrived. I really love all four of these rugs. They’re all so very pretty, but I think it’ll be very clear that one is the standout winner.

First up is this Bloom Rug Orange and Teal rug (affiliate link).

I really love this rug, and as soon as I saw it, I thought for sure that it would be the winner. I love the vibrancy of the orange, and I like that it has teal in it that complements the velvet while not matching it.

The next one that arrived was this Bloom Rugs Orange and Beige rug (affiliate link).

It’s a beautiful rug, but that doesn’t look orange to me. It’s way too far on the red end of the spectrum for my taste. It’s a pretty one, though!

The next one is this Bloom Rugs Terracotta/Mustard rug (affiliate link). I didn’t include this one in the post two weeks ago. I came across it the next day and thought it might work.

This rug, quite honestly, is one of the prettiest rugs I’ve ever seen. I love this rug so much. I love everything about it, from the colors to the pattern. I was disappointed that the colors don’t look as vibrant in person as they did in the product listing on Amazon, but it’s still gorgeous.

And the fourth and final rug to arrive yesterday was this Bloom Rugs Orange Traditional rug (affiliate link).

The orange in this rug is almost a perfect match to the birds in the headboard fabric. And while the rug doesn’t have any green in it, the background color of the border definitely has a green undertone.

I was able to rule out the second one immediately. It’s really too red/brown for my taste, and definitely too much so to go with the headboard fabric. So that left me with three.

You may be surprised, but the second one that I ruled out was the first rug — the orange and teal. I really liked the rug, but it appears overall dark to me. There’s no lightness to it. It has a heaviness to it that doesn’t feel right to me, and I think that’s because of the teal border and the fact that there’s virtually no light neutral color in it — no cream, no off-white, no beige. Anyway, I couldn’t shake that heavy feeling that it gives me.

And then there were two.

I can’t even express to you how much I love that rug on the left. It’s so gorgeous and so perfect in general, and I was so hoping that I could make myself love it with the fabrics. But while it doesn’t read as red and brown as that second rug in this post, it does still read too red and brown to for the fabrics. And it lacks the vibrancy that I had so hoped it would have.

So that leaves me with the winner.

I think this rug is the perfect one to go in our bedroom. It plays so nicely with the headboard fabric (which was the challenge all along). The orange is actually a bit of a coral-orange, which I love. It has that lightness to it that the other orange rug was lacking. And the light background color in the border not only goes really well with the background color in the headboard fabric, but it has a bit of a green undertone to it that will work nicely with the green accent fabrics I’ll be using in the room.

I can’t wait to get the full 9 x 12 version of this rug! I’m so glad a few of you mentioned ordering the smaller rugs to test out the colors and patterns before ordering a big 9 x 12 size. Because let me tell you, rerolling and repackaging 9 x 12 rugs is not for the faint of heart! That’s a CHORE!! And I had four of them to return! I never would have thought to order the small ones first, but it’s such a smart way to go about choosing a rug.

So what do you think about my choice? Of the four, is that the one you would have chosen?

  1. I’m glad you found one you loved! But #2 and #4 were the ones I immediately said “NO WAY” to! #4 seems heavier to me than #1, I think it’s the darker orange and the particular design of the border. But it’s not my rug and not my room! 🙂 You always turn out lovely rooms so I’m sure you’re making the right choice.

    1. I agree. I always felt that Kristi was struggling because she seems to love more clear, bolder colors, not the faded muted look. I could be wrong for sure but her final choice seems to support that idea. Great pick.

  2. Any of these was a much better choice than the original contenders. By far. So glad you didn’t settle, and glad you found one you’re excited about!

  3. I felt the same way and love #1, but there are probably nuances we aren’t seeing via little pictures. I particularly like how the teal edging looks in #1 with the curtains. Like you said, not my house! It’s going to be beautiful.

  4. The rug is beautiful! I don’t comment often, as I would mostly just be repeating what others have already said. I enjoy reading, following yours and Matt’s journey and learning along the way. Thank you for the way you share with others and teach, for taking the time to interact and respond to questions and for your generous heart and spirit.

  5. Yes, great match and much better than the earlier contenders.
One reason I love your blog is, you don’t settle! You search until you
find what ‘feels right’ for you! I have ‘settled’ for things that didn’t feel right and
you are never quite as satisfied as you are with something you love!
Can’t wait to see the awesome results

  6. The thing that jumped out at me was that you spelled “complements” correctly for the meaning you intended to convey.

  7. I was hoping you would pick that one. G.o.r.g.e.o.u.s! It is going to look wonderful in that room! So happy you were patient.

  8. I have the same fabric in the drapes and bought 3 yards of fabric to recover a small headboard a few years back. My area rug is gold and hints of rust and hints of sage. I love how you mixed the rugs with the grasscloth and other fabrics it is just a totally different vibe. which vibe works best for your over all house look? Each is good. Wow!

  9. Your pick was my immediate winner! Aren’t you happy you didn’t settle!! BTW when I think you just redid something I look back and it was 7 years ago 🤯

  10. Oh MY…what a great idea…one of those “Why didn’t I think of that!” moments. Order the small, easier to handle pieces before ordering the room size one!!! OMG. I never ever thought of that…a genus among us! And, I have to say, the first was great, but the one you picked is really nicer…I love it with everything. You must be very pleased to have that settled. Onward!!!

  11. No, I would have chosen the Bloom orange and teal rug. But your choice is perfect if that’s the one you like. Congrats on finding it.

  12. I had chosen #1 and #4, with #1 as my favorite, but #4 is a good second, so I’m not mad at your final pick! I just felt that the border wasn’t as sharp as I would have liked. Glad that you factored in the orange!

  13. I would have gone with Rug1 – it’s my favorite and heavy isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it is on the floor and is the “grounding” factor. But your house and your choice. What matters most is that YOU are happy with it.

  14. You chose the rug that was my favorite from the start. It looks so beautiful with the other colors. You certainly have a gift at pulling patterns and colors together in fun and beautiful ways.

  15. I agree. I always felt that Kristi was struggling because she seems to love more clear, bolder colors, not the faded muted look. I could be wrong for sure but her final choice seems to support that idea. Great pick.

  16. I feel so validated! This is the one I picked when you showed the Amazon photos. So obviously, I think you made a fabulous choice! And I’m so happy that you found one that makes you happy!

  17. I love the one you chose! I thought immediately it went the best. I have been following you for years! Thanks for all your great content!
