In The Market For A New Washer & Dryer (Best Brand? Top Loader? Front Loader?)

The time has finally come, and I am now in the market for a new washer and dryer. I’ve been researching and searching for days (and probably missed some great Memorial Day sales), but I still have no idea what I should buy. I’ve read countless customer reviews on numerous washer and dryer sets, but they didn’t seem to clarify anything. What is the best brand of washer and dryer? And do I want a top loader or a front loader? My head is spinning.

For the last ten years, I’ve been living with a very basic Kenmore 70 Series washer and dryer. They look like this…

I’ve actually used these for much longer than 10 years. (Not this exact set that I have now, but the Kenmore 70 Series in general.) I did a little googling, and the Kenmore 70 Series dates back to the 70s. It’s actually what I purchased when I had my own apartment in my 20s. I sold those when I moved to Turkey, but when I came back to the States, I remembered loving those so much that I searched for and bought another Kenmore set for my apartment. And those followed me to our new house in Oregon after Matt and I got married.

Then when we moved into this house, I figured that I’d eventually get a brand new washer and dryer, but I decided that while I waited until I had a nice laundry room or laundry area, I’d purchase another Kenmore set just to hold me over in the meantime. I’m pretty sure I got the set for somewhere around $300 or $350.

Well, that’s been almost 10 years ago now. And that’s precisely why I’ve kept buying these simple Kenmore washers and dryers for the last 20+ years. These things are absolute beasts. They’re durable and reliable, and because nothing on them is computerized, they’re cheap to fix if something goes wrong.

But the time has come. A few months ago, I noticed that the bottom of the washer was rusting and leaking a little bit of water every time I’d do a load of laundry. I never really worried about it because my washer and dryer are in the sunroom (a term I use very loosely). Do you remember what the sunroom looks like? This is what it looked like when we moved in…

And nothing has changed today except that the room is filled with stuff. I basically use it as a storage room, and it’s where I have my big tool chest, shelves holding paint, polyurethane, and stains, leftover supplies from projects, extra lumber, large tools, etc. And when we finally do get to build our addition, this room will have to be torn down first.

The room is ground level (the rest of the house is on a pier and beam foundation about 18 inches from the ground), and whoever built this room created the floor by putting two layers of heavy plastic directly on the concrete (which I’m assuming was the original outdoor patio) followed by a layer of particle board, topped with two layers of thin commercial-style carpet. Every time it rains hard, water comes in under the back sliding door. So needless to say, a little bit of water leaking out from the rusted corner of the washer with each load of laundry really can’t make this room much worse than it already is.

But a few days ago, the agitator in the washer stopped working reliably. (I could get it started if I turned it manually for a minute or two). But a couple of days later, the agitator stopped working completely, and the water wouldn’t drain out. All of that, along with the rusted and leading bottom corner, means that it’s really not worth putting money in it to fix it. And sometimes, the dryer decides that it doesn’t want to heat up, so it just blows cold air. It’s only done that twice in the last year, but it’s still inconvenient.

So here I am, for the first time in my entire life, ready to buy a brand new washer and dryer. I’ve decided that after all this time, I don’t want to buy more used appliances. I want them to be new. I just don’t know what kind to buy.

What I like about top-load washers

  1. I’m used to them. I’ve never had anything else. And it’s human nature to be drawn to what we’re familiar with.
  2. In my mind, it just seems like they work better to get clothes clean. I know that’s probably not true, but having a tub that fills with water and has an agitator in it just makes sense to me. 😀
  3. I always wonder about the random scenarios. What if I want to dye some fabric? Sure, I’ve only done that about three times in the last 10 years 😀 , but can that even be done in a front-load washer? I don’t see how.

What I like about front-load washers

  1. You can have a countertop over the washer/dryer set, which I think looks nice and clean. And when I’m envisioning what our future laundry room may look like, I always picture a countertop over the washer and dryer. That wouldn’t work with a top-loader.
  2. I’m only five feet tall, so getting things out of the bottom of a top-load washer is always a challenge. A front-loader would be so much more convenient for me.

So just comparing those lists, a front-load washer seems like a better fit for me. But then I’m always hearing about all of the extra cleaning that front-loaders require in order to keep them from smelling musty. Unless that problem with front loaders has been fixed over the last few years, the idea of that doesn’t thrill me in the least.

With all of that said, and with all of my researching and comparing and reading customer reviews, I really do like this LG 4.5 cu. ft. Large Capacity High Efficiency Stackable Smart Front Load Washer with TurboWash360 and Steam in Black Steel (there’s a mouthful for ya! 😀 ) and the matching dryer.

Out of 2247 customer reviews, the washer has an average 4.6 out of 5 star rating. That’s pretty impressive! The dryer has 4.7 out of 5 stars with 1080 reviews. Also very impressive!

But I don’t want to actually click that Buy Now button until I hear what y’all have to say. I love being able to hear your experiences, so let me know what you think as far as brands go, but also regarding the top loader vs. front loader issue. And what about the musty smell problem that front load washers have? Is that a thing of the past? Do they still require extra cleaning and attention to keep that smell away?

  1. I’ve had a front loader for at least the last 20 years. The ones I have now are 6 year old LGs. The washer works great. Probably the best washer I’ve ever had. I’ve never had a mold issue. I run the clean cycle once per month with the cleaning tablets. I leave the washer door open to dry out after a load and then shut it after about 5 hours, but I don’t shut it tightly. I always keep top loaders open for the same reason and also ran a cleaning cycle once per month.

    1. What cleaning tabs do you use? A year or so ago I tried some and the stench after was so awful I couldn’t go into our closed—no window— washer area foe weeks! I use vinegar now.

      1. I’m not the original commenter, but I have found a cleaner that does a great job. I’ve tried both the Affresh and the Tide cleaner and my washer still smelled of mildew. Then I saw a recommendation of one on TikTok. So, “TikTok made me buy it”! You can find it on Amazon. I don’t think that this is making a hyperlink, but you can copy and paste it into your browser.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DVFZTTG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It comes in a blue and white box and the name of the product as listed on Amazon is Washing Machine Cleaner Descaler 24 Pack – Deep Cleaning Tablets For HE Front Loader & Top Load Washer, Septic Safe Eco-Friendly Deodorizer, Clean Inside Drum And Laundry Tub Seal – 12 Month Supply. I’ve been very pleased with it. It’s less expensive and has performed better than the Affresh or Tide. It got rid of the smell and most of the hard water stains. I had a lot of build up that had never been touched but the other cleaners; but it was all gone after running another cleaning cycle

    2. I leave the washer door open with a plastic cup holding the gap in my front loader. No musky problems in over six years.

  2. We had a similar washer dryer and it looked so nice. Then it died 5 years later. That is all the longer they are expected to last. The repairman said the only washers and dryers that are completely manufactured in the USA are Speed Queen. Mine came with a 10 year warranty…unheard of on all other brands. It is a top loader but thought I am not buying one that will last only 5 years.

    1. I had never even heard of Speed Queen until just a few days ago in the comment section of a friend’s Facebook post about the two-in-one washer/dryer. I’d never, ever get a two-in-one, but at least two people commented and said they had Speed Queen and would never use anything else.

      1. Ahh, youth…Speed Queen was a staple in the laundry rooms of yore.
I think they must be durable or laundromats wouldn’t use them. But along comes the new kids with bells, whistles, fancy lights and exotic names!
I, too got sucked in but after 4 yrs I haven’t had issues with my LG pair.

        1. I’ve had front loader machines for at least 20 years or more and love them. They use less water and seem to be gentler on your clothes. Since there’s no agitator you can wash large comforters in them. My most recent set is a GE & it has a drying cycle after you takeout your clothes to eliminate moisture left on the drum. I also leave the door ajar to let moisture evaporate. They remove so much water from the clothes that they dry quickly.

      2. We have four small children and wouldn’t have anything but Speed Queen! Top loader washer and dryer. Average 2 loads/day for the last 7 years, a few parts repaired here and there.

      3. I’m a Speed Queen user. No bells and whistles on it, which is just what I wanted. I’ve never had any problems with it for the ten years I’ve had it. It was pricey but worth it. I am a caretaker of my husband who has Vascular Dementia, therefore I use my washer a lot. I wouldn’t trade it for any of the newer models out there at all.

      4. Funny, I hadn’t heard of it either until a few weeks ago. Turns out my sister has had one for ages and has been very happy with it.

  3. Speed Queen top loader, basic model. Also their dryer. I have eight kids, all grown now, I went through so many washers and dryers until I found this one. Cost more, warranty is amazing. Five years I think. Never have had to use it.

  4. I have this set and enjoy it. I have only had front load washers for the last 15 years+ though. There is a slight amount of cleaning to be done. After so many loads, a code will come up to remind you to perform a tub wash. I also leave the door open to dry out after my last load. And periodically I may wipe down the rubber seal.

    1. I have had just about every washer/dry combo there is. We are currently remodeling our 4th house in 5 years. I have not had good luck with any LG appliance so would personally stay far away from. I had a Whirlpool Duet set that was good as well as Maytag front load. I have decided though that because of potential issues with fancy electronics I now just want pretty basic top load washer and reg dryer. Good luck.

      1. My top notch repairman said he has the worst problems with the LG and Samsung and don’t buy them if you want reliability. Further, I understand from many friends that the newer energy efficient front loading washing machines do not get your clothes clean and constantly require cleaning themselves. I am going to try to find older models that are NOT energy efficient. My new washer that I was forced to buy is a miserable digital thing and I absolutely HATE it. And am currently looking and watching for a good used set. I understand there is a really good Maytag commercial washer/dryer set that is the one to get and I had bookmarked where to get them. Unfortunately, the bookmarked site is no longer in service but I will be trying to find them again. Best thing to do is check with Consumer Reports! Following this post for further info on what others think.

  5. I have a front loader set that I paid around $2000 for. I also loved the look of a countertop on top and thought it would be perfect. I followed the advice I had read about wiping it down after every use and leaving the door open. But it still developed a musty smell. We’ve taken the rubber gasket(not sure if that’s the right term) out several times to clean it and it helps but only for a short time. There is a hole in the rubber gasket where water can drain out. It accumulates the nastiest stuff. I’ve used q-tips to clean debris out and they come out completely black. It’s disgusting and I a purchase that I truly regret. I’ll never do a front loader again.

    1. I had several front loaders and although they didn’t stink, the nasty gasket issue ruined the deal for me. We have a maytag top loader that does a great job but had been out of service 2x in one year (it’s first year of “life”!). Last time a whole month! They ended up replacing everything but the chassis. Seriously. So I’m not sure maytag is the way to go either and am glad we got the warranty.

  6. I love my “Speed Queen”. It costs a little more than other washers but that is because Speed Queen made a very good washer and dryer back in the 50’s and they have never had to change anything about them. No plastic parts, large tub and when we were looking for a washer the salesman (I might add he was elderly) had me push against the tub and it didn’t move like the newer washers that actually felt like they were loose and could bump the sides of the machine. The salesman told me to tell my daughter that if I sell the house or pass on, she should take the washer and dryer because it will probably last her lifetime also.

  7. Top loader. I just bought a new set. Washer and dryer. Basic. At the end of the day all u want are clean fresh laundry keep it simple

  8. We really only use front loaders in the UK. As long as you leave the door a bit open between washes, and run a very hot wash occasionally (I do towels) then there shouldn’t be a problem with funky smells.

If you’re getting a new dryer, get a heat pump one. Bit slower (because cooler) but so much cheaper to run (a quarter of the energy use.)

      1. I was just checking the comments to see if someone pointed you to the one and only Sarah… legit amazing insta’ page to follow for everything dirty!!!
She is a goddess and reviews things in depth, giving lots of options and pro/cons.

Enjoy the rabbit hole and welcome to the “Dirty Bast@rds”!!

  9. Front loaders are in the majority here in the UK. I’ve recently dyed some clothing in mine and its worked well. I know you talked about putting a counter over the top of them, I love them because you can stack them, so definitely more flexibility when you come to building your new laundry.

  10. Front load washer owner here, took a few months to figure out that I needed to leave the washer door open after I was done washing. Also that liquid fabric softener makes it mold and smell. But I switched to white vinegar, run the self clean mode once a month, and wipe down the seal with vinegar once a month. Along with leaving the door open to dry out, haven’t had an issue since. It’s been 8 years with the same washer and dryer. Fixed them a few times but they still work great.

  11. After hearing horror stories about front loaders I bought the Samsung fancy top loaders with no agitator and the wash basin about 7 years ago and hated them. I never felt like my clothes got clean, I couldn’t reach the bottom to get the clothes out and they were constantly out of balance. About 2 years ago we bought a new house and I gave that set to my daughter and did a ton of research. I bought the GE Ultra Fresh Vent System. I love them! They have no smell! They are made with microban which prevents mold and mildew and they have an actual vent system so when you finish washing for the day you hit the button and it vents and dries the machine. You don’t have to leave the machine open at all. The wash and dry great, have tons of settings and the dryer will adjust automatically to your washer setting. You can also wash and fry a small load in just the washer. If you use liquid soap you can fill the reservoir with an entire bottle of soap and it will dispense it one load at a time. I got the pedestals with mine so I don’t have to bend over to change loads as I have lupus and it can be challenging most days. We had to move our cabinets up but it was so worth it! They also have an app that sends you a notification when the cycle is done and that really helps me stay on top of it. I can’t say enough about this set! I hope this helps!

    1. I have the same one and love it. No mold, no odor and it cleans the clothes really well. It also has a button to push to add more water and extra rinses.

  12. Twenty+ years ago I bought first set of front loaders. Took forever to do a load and the odor was so awful, even when I kept the door open on the washer. Thinking it was that particular washer, I bought another brand. Same thing. I could smell the odor when I walked in. After deciding front loaders are just not for the humid south, two years ago I bought Speed Queen heavy duty commercial washer and dryer. I absolutely love Speed Queen. No electronic parts at all! Large capacity tub. Fast. Cleans much better than the front loaders. The four people who followed me buying them are also so pleased. My sister had Speed Queen washer that worked through two babies, two grandchildren and was replaced when it was 40 years old!

  13. I’ve had an LG front load and a Samsung front load and two years ago I got the LG top load. I kind of wish it was a front loader. I have my old Samsung front load in my basement and it cleans dirtier stuff quicker than the top load. I love my LG connects to my phone and alerts me when the cycle is complete. If I had to buy a new set today I’d get the exact set you are looking at. The newer sets are much better at getting musty. The app will tell you when you’ve done 30 loads and then you do a cleaning cycle. The Samsung I have has a self cleaning cycle that is amazing and works astonishingly well. My LG front load was ten years+ when it died (and it was a small capacity and we have a family of 7 so was used a lot) and it didn’t have a musty problem ever. I do live in a dry climate though. I did have to clean the sand out of the drain hose once or twice.

  14. If there’s water involved stay away from Samsung.
I prefer a top load because of the iky mold issue, and I’m 5’4’ ( I may have lost an inch😉) but you can keep a step stool nearby and it’s fine. Don’t make too much of that part. If you get a front load make sure it’s at your level—older I get I hate bending! Lastly, I have an LG pair that we bought when we landed in Az 4 yrs ago today! I love the glass top washer, the dryer door opens straight out or like a swing door. The chimes are pleasant and can be varied in loudness. If you can wait July 4 th sales are coming up and Home Depot should have a decent sale on the pair. ( beware of sticker shock though)

  15. Well, I have to tell you…we bought all LG appliances when we moved into this house 13 years ago. The LG stove was always trouble, and we paid several times for repair…still never heated the oven right. After 10 years my nephew and husband took it apart and found out why…one element was fried…probably from day one…hidden under the oven, and impossible to get out. (They did fix it tho) The microwave we went through 3 in 5 years, so I bought a different brand to replace. The dishwasher is still working. The washer and dryer…have been fixed a number of times. I love the set, but they broke down as well. Nothing major, but they have to be totally taken apart to put the $20. part in. My husband did it with a YouTube video. So we are plugging along until we move. If you had to pay for repair, you might as well junk them, and invest in new. (I hate that!) Once, when ordering parts, the agent at a parts location told me she gets a lot of orders for LG parts, and it appears they are only reliable in certain appliances. I do like my front load…my husband built a platform so they are not so low. There is a need to keep them open, for sure. Next we are getting a stackable to save floor space in a smaller laundry room, but I can reach OK. The front/top loaders are so much personal preference…I hate digging into the drum for things, and I think the front loader cleans a bit better/uses less water.

    1. Just had to junk our 5 year old LG fridge. It wasn’t worth the cost of repairs and no repairman wanted to touch it! Never again for LG products!

  16. I love my LG silver front loaders that have given me faithful service since 2009. They are still shiny and beautiful, that’s important to me too. We have cabinets right above them, they are on matching pedestals that have a roomy drawer in them. I use them for extra linens that don’t fit into the linen closet

    1. how embarrassing, they are FRONT LOADERS! Not top loaders. I still love them. Repairs have been few and far between. They were still under warranty when the washer needed a new pump years ago. After that I stopped washing horse blankets in it and it’s been fine

  17. My friend, who is the appliance manager at my local Lowe’s, and can have anything he wants, bought a Whirlpool not-top-of-the-line, and so I did, too, along with the matching dryer. Straightforward, made in the US, no agitator, and does everything I know to want. His other recommendation was Speed Queen, the brand made for laundromats. I did look at them, and loved them for being basically bullet proof, but they were a bit out of my price range.

I’ve had two front loaders, and they did have odor issues. They were located in a hall, and it was a pain to leave the diors ajar.

I loved my 45 year old Kenmore washer. Someone had paid my brother to haul it off when he was in high school, and he brought it home to his college sister. At one point I decided to pry up the change that was stuck at the bottom of the tub, leaving a big hole. He just put the wad of pennies and nickels back with JB Weld, and it ran another 25 years without a leak. What a machine!

    Good luck, and kind regards,

    Diana Rollo

Here is the model info on the washer:
    Mod WTW5000DW2

  18. A repairman told me that the best W/D is Speed Queen. Top load has an agitator and I like that feature. I don’t believe clothes get as clean just flopping over and over in the front load. I also like Maytag and had a set I used for about 12 years but sold them when we moved.

  19. Love my LG front load washer and dryer! They were already here when we bought the house and are probably around 17 years old. No mustyness… I did buy a ‘door clip’ ( https://www.etsy.com/listing/685220150/kenmore-front-loading-washing-machine?ref=yr_purchases ) to hold the door slightly ajar when not in use and have had zero issues with smell. We do use an HE (high efficiency) laundry liquid soap as the directions say to do and do not use much of it- maybe a tablespoon per average load. As necessary- maybe once a month- I wipe the door and seals down with vinegar which takes some lint and such off. Haven’t done a serious comparison but I’m pretty sure they use decidedly less water. I really feel like front loaders get the laundry cleaner with less water!

  20. Here is my experience.
My family ran coin op laundry for years on a East Coast Island with so much sand. Commercially Speed Queen was the only machines to hold up to the sand and their front load machines were called Big Boys. They also survived a many underwire bra wire.

residentially I’ve had front loaders for over 20 years and probably won’t own anything else. My first front loader was the maytag when front loaders were finally made for residential market. and I loved that machine. It ended up having a class action suit over it but I never had a problem with it. My second front loader was a whirlpool. It was also a wonderful machine. I never once had problems with mold or stains or smell. It finally died a “catastrophic” failure meaning the back support of the tub failed after numerous years. I tried getting it repaired and alas not feasible. The tub is now used as a firepit. I now have a samsung front load machine and I HATE IT meaning it will most likely last forever. It smells, it leaves streaks on clothes. I absolutely despise it. The only thing “good” about it is at the end of the cycle it plays a cute tune. I cannot wait for it to die.

as for my dryer I’m still using the maytag dryer I bought with my first front loader that dates to 1999.

  21. After having a front loader for the past 20 years, I’m ready to go back to a top loader. I hate that I have to leave the door open to prevent the stench. Regarding brand, we got an LG a couple years ago and really like it. The door opens from the front or side and is very efficient in drying.

  22. If my washer were in the market for a new washing machine, I would buy a washing machine with an agitator vs impeller. I miss my clothes moving back and forth against an agitator and believe clothes come out cleaner using an agitator.

  23. If you want to dye fabric, top loader. Speed Queen excels at them. My mother actually had one for over 50 years, still going strong.

If you opt for a front loader, avoid Samsung and GE. Particularly Samsung. Horrible reliability, difficult to get parts and service.

We have an LG pair similar to what you’re considering. They’re good, but our 1999 Kenmore/Whirlpool HE3T washer was much better. The LG washer takes much longer to balance a heavy a load (quilt, jeans, etc.) and needs babysitting while doing so or it moves around (yes, it’s level. We’ve checked many times). I think the balancers/weights in the old unit were more robust. Sadly, we left it behind when we moved.

  24. We just bought new front loaders and got GE. I’ve been told they have the best customer service and fewest issues currently. We looked into Speed Queen but the local retailer just dropped their line of Speed Queen because they couldn’t get parts. Not sure why but it was bad enough of an issue that they dropped them and I didn’t pursue that brand. Whatever you do, don’t ever buy Whirlpool Duets. We have had 2 sets and neither lasted longer than 6 years. There are multiple features on the GE that I love including the light inside the drums, the access for the filter on the front which is WAY easier, and the venting that occurs to prevent mold. Candidly I never really had a mold issue on front loaders unless I didn’t clean the seal regularly but I do like the venting system on GE. So far, so good! Also, make sure you visit a store and open the door and reach in if you are thinking about not getting the pedestals. I had the idea of the counter over it but i have back issues and couldn’t do it without the pedestals. Good luck!

  25. You need very little detergent with high efficiency washers, especially front loaders. A lot of issues can be prevented by using the right amount of detergent (about a tablespoon, 2 for heavy loads). Also leaving the door open so it can dry out prevents mold. One thing that appeals to me about front loaders is pillows don’t float around, so they actually get clean. I think overall, with proper use, you can get a better clean with a high efficiency front loader than a high efficiency top loader. The top loaders are finicky about how you load them (not too full, not too empty, leave a hole in the center if there’s no agitation column). Another thing to take into account is cycle length. Many HE washers take over an hour for a cycle. For me that’s totally unsustainable because of the amount of laundry we generate and my schedule. People do rave about Speed Queens, which I believe can be used conventionally and not just as HE, so those might be worth a look.

    1. That is an incorrect statement about detergent.
The amount needed depends on the hardness of your water and how dirty the clothes are. There is NOT one fixed amount.
Another reason I hate the front loaders, you cannot add more detergent if required.

  26. I had a set like yours that lasted over 30 years before I bought GE front loaders. I never had a problem with clothes getting clean but I hated the musty smell. I always left my door open, cleaned the seals after every wash, etc. I am a perfectionist and it seemed I was always cleaning. I sure wanted my Kenmore set back! Front loaders finally quit after 14 years. After many hours of research and shopping in stores, I bought Samsung top loaders with the agitator. I absolutely love them. Maybe I’m old school.

  27. I bought a Whirlpool Duet front load washer and matching dryer almost 20 years ago, and the washer is still working fine. I leave the door open after doing laundry. My only advice would be is to be careful with the countertop you build over it. I have a beautiful tiled countertop over my set, but when the dryer died and needed replacing after a number of years, the size of the washers and dryers now are slightly bigger – enough that the dryers won’t fit. I had to go with an apartment size ventless dryer and I’m not happy with it. But it was a lot easier than raising the countertop. That probably won’t be an issue for you as you’re very capable of redoing a countertop, but it’s outside of my comfort zone! Just something to consider when you’re building yours for the first time. I do much prefer front loading to top loading washers.

  28. I know the front loaders get a bad rap BUT I’ve used nothing else for 35 years. The new ones have a latch that keeps the door slightly ajar, and for those people who have older units that latch can be had on Amazon. I have an LG and my son has an ASKO and I love his units. I bought my original Frigidaire unit in Canada, it was made in Germany and it was still going strong after 10 years when we sold it with our house. I originally bought it because of the water savings, but the clothes were cleaner and it looked so cute in my laundry room-important to me.

  29. I have had a Whirlpool duet front load for about 12 years now. I have a ton of bells and whistles, some I probably don’t even know about. I absolutely love it and have zero regrets. I have a textile degree and never dye fabric in my washer. I replaced a maytag top load. My sister had a LG front load and you want to talk about a mess! It always stopped working. The transmission died and to fix it was gonna cost as much as buying the washer all over again. I always hear stay away from LG and Samsung. Whirlpool is the same as Maytag without the maytag price. Mine has never smelled, it has extra air vents to help with that. My inlaws had either a LG or samsung and that thing smelled to high heaven. They ended up having to replace the gasket and then it died. And that smell with end up in everything you wash. I am 5’4″ and I originally bought without the bases. I ended up adding them because I didn’t like that I had to get on the floor to get that one sock that always stuck to the top of the drum. The bases are expensive but worth it and they give extra storage.

  30. I’ve had a front loader for nearly 10 years now, the musty problem is a problem, we have to wash the tub and drain and clean it regularly. I think in my future I will just go back to a top loader. However, my set are old, so maybe like you said they’ve fixed those problems.

  31. I got a Samsung front loader set about 8 yrs ago. No problems with either one.
I can tell you absolutely that you won’t be dyeing in it. Can’t control the cycle like a top loader and have access to the fabric to rise/spin. I use a hose to spin clean water thru to get rid of salt and soda ash.
Anyway, I’ve never had any issues with odor or mold. I never shut the door completely.
In my misspent youth, I wworked for a laundromat. The one commercial machine I remember was Speedqueen. Excellent machine.
My advice is to call a repair shop and & get their recommendation. They know what is crap and what is good.

  32. Thank you for posting this! I am in the market for new W/D as well, and the business that sells Speed Queen in our area (they specialize in high end appliances) said they stopped carrying SQ as well because of repair and parts issues…said during the pandemic they “changed” the W/D and have had soooo many problems they couldn’t recommend them! I’ve hear nothing BUT EXCELLENT reviews from people that have had them for several years prior to 2020, but I’m leary to spend that much money on them when they are not reliable at this point…
I was looking at the GE’s and keep hearing good things about them!
    Thanks, again!

  33. Had Fisher/Paykel combo… great machines until they break down…all parts appear to be only available by import.. adding at least a week’s wait. Was reco’d to GE by my handyman as parts are more readily/locally available. Just as the Pandemic began…of course both Fisher/Pakels went south at the same time. Ran over to Home Depot on a Monday ordered very simple no bells & whistles GE set… delivered that Thursday … and they’ve been chugging along ever since…. Since I am a widow, Laundry is a once a week thing…. All I ask/need of them is to wash & dry my clothes… that is exactly what they do…better known as ..the “KISS” system.

    1. I agree! I’ve have a GE washer and I love it. 3 speed, no bells and whistles to break down, and it does the job. My friend has a HD LG and she hates it because she can’t control the level of water. The more gizmos the more to break down. Keep it simple. Almost all the machines today are made by Whirlpool anyway. LG is South Korea. Samsung, also. I wouldn’t trade my basic GE for anything. Same for the dryer. Kenmore by Sears is made by somebody else. Actually the name Kenmore is just that, a name. Not a brand. It’s someone’s name when Sears was trying to come up with a brand name. Funny history on how Kenmore came to be. Maybe a small platform to raise the appliances off the ground. If you need a step stool, so be it. Not fair but adjustments are easy. Also, my bottom freezer Kenmore fridge is a dream. Over 10yrs old, one new Mother board and still very efficient. I do like Sears products the best. Next would be GE. Best of luck. Like I said, keep it simple.

  34. I had a front loader and went back to a top loader…even keeping the door open and cleaning the seal, there was still an odor. I have a top load now that I like much better, but when it dies I want a speed queen! It’s the rolls Royce of washers, but also old school and basic. My mom has one and she loves it.

  35. Keeping researching and go to the local Home Depot or Lowe’s and spend some time with the models. Do NOT get a machine with auto fill level. You can not adjust to wash a small quick load such as using dye or washing a single item or two that you need washed between regular laundry days. Be sure you have an agitator. Most no longer come with a hold capability or soak capability so that feature is gone. 3 years ago I was went with a stackable unit due to space limitations, not a fan. You would have trouble getting things out of dyer since it is high up there! Be careful of all the electronic controls too. If I ever buy another set, it will be one with knobs and simplest manual settings available!

  36. Don’t buy LG. Every LG appliance I’ve had had died within 5 years. Repairmen have told this is par for the course with any LG appliance. I just recently had to replace an LG washer after about 5 years. The fabric softener compartment rusted out and was causing water to leak all over basement floor. I bought a Maytag top loader with no agitator. With no agitator I can wash my king comforters and big dog beds with no problem.

  37. Agree with many others re Speed Queen, very happy with this purchase. We have the top load washer and matching dryer. I did lots of research and this brand rose to the top.

  38. SPEED QUEEN !!! I am on my second set of Speed Queen w/d – not because anything went wrong with the first set, it’s because we moved and had to leave it behind. In our new house, I immediately replaced our basically-disposable newer washer and 30+ year old on-it’s-last-leg dryer with the same Speed Queen set I had in my old house. Best warranty, commercial grade performance. Simple operation, and it uses ACTUAL water!

  39. SPEED QUEEN
There’s a reason laundromats use Speed Queen. Also purchase from an independent dealer so you know who will install and stand behind the product. It’s a lottery who the big box stores will send to your house to install. Speed Queen is a beast.

  40. I have a really old top loader that I got on Marketplace for free – it is AWESOME and I hope it lasts forever! So, I cannot really tell you about buying new ones. However, I can tell you that I have heard horror stories about mold and front loaders. Enough that I would never buy one if my current one ever goes. Just something to consider!

  41. We have a very similar model of LG front loaders that I love. Previously we had Samsung, and while it worked fine for about 10 years, when it came time to replace them the LG outshone in customer and repairman reviews. Our current set is about 4-5 years old and is still performing well. I do leave the washer door slightly ajar after a load is finished and I’ve never had problems with odor. I also run the washer cleaner pod thing every 30 loads like it recommends. Aside from the fact it washes and dries well, the feature I love best is the digital notification on my phone or Apple Watch that tells me the load is finished.

  42. I have had an LG front loader for about 6 years. I HATE IT You cannot soak clothes with a front loader, sometimes even with the added water function, things like sheets do not clean as well.
I should have purchased the Speed Queen. It is a great washer, a little higher in price but has a 10 year warranty and CLEANS EVERYTHING.

  43. I had a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer many (15?) years ago and I will never have another front loader. I am 5’3” and I have a top loader . My dryer is on a base so it is easier to load and empty. I did not like that you could not add anything to the front loader once the cycle started. It took an hour for a cycle compared to 30 minutes for a top loader. And no you cannot dye anything in a front loader. I still have an old wringer washer in my garage that I used to dye things when I had the front loader. One time my son accidentally shut part of a shirt in the door of the front loader and it ripped the door gasket. It was $100. for the gasket and that was something I wasn’t sure I could install, so that would have meant a repair bill. So I repeatedly repaired it with duct tape and E6000 until I could get another washer. I’m sure they have improved since then, but I vote for top loaders all the way!

  44. Speed Queen… I love my washer.. have a different brand dryer, but would go with that brand if I’m buying a set. Would definitely buy Speed Queen if you get a top loader, they’re amazing!

    1. Along with that, I got mine from First Furniture and TV in Temple, they’re really good people to work with. I would definitely buy from them again.

  45. My mom has a massive toploader, and she hates it. She’s just a little over 5 feet and has to use an implement to help her get her washed laundry out. We’re staying with my parents right now while we’re doing a bathroom reno, and I did a load in it yesterday, and I had a heck of a time reaching to the bottom to get the clothes put (I’m 5’4″). My mom always says, “Why do they get men to design appliances that mostly women use?!” LOL. That being said, there are top loading machines that aren’t quite so ridiculous. As for front-loading machines, I haven’t found the smell is bad, as long as you keep the door open to let it dry out when not using it. And the door gasket and door need to be wiped occasionally.

  46. Speed Queen all the way. I’ve had fancy top loading, no agitator and hated it. Took forever to do a load and the clothes never came out clean. I wanted a basic machine with an agitator that had variable fill levels and few basic other choices. The repairman recommended Speed Queen. There were only three choices and I went with the mid one; have never regretted it. Have had it ten-plus years now, never an issue and still going strong. My dryer, on the other hand, is a basic Maytag prolly 25 years old that the repairman says I’ll likely never have to replace! I don’t care that they don’t match. I’m all about few bells and whistles as they are just more to go wrong.

  47. I have a Samsung top-loader without an agitator and I love it. I had always had Kenmores, but the ratings spoke differently now. The lack of an agitator means you can wash comforters and blankets at home. The top-loader means you don’t have to worry about the stinky seal issues of a front loader. My sister, daughter and daughter-in-law both had front loaders, which convinced me I did not want one. My daughter has since changed to a top loader.

I understand LG is getting good ratings now. I have not used that brand, and hopefully I won’t need to. I’m in my 70’s and might be able to avoid buying a new washer ever again!

  48. I’ve had front loaders and top loaders. Being vertically challenged myself, I prefer the front loader. I always left the door open on mine and never had an odor issue, but then I also always used borax in addition to my detergent, so that also kept the washer clean AND odor free. I have an LG top loader now and I really do NOT like it at all, but since we spent a good amount on it, I will just have to live with it.

    1. I’ve had front loading washing machines now for almost 30 years – I’ve never left the doors open and I’ve never experienced the smells that so many people complain about. I do wipe down the rubber gasket periodically – it’s true that it can really collect some gunk. However – that makes me wonder where that gunk may be hiding in a top loader.

I make my own detergent and a component of that is borax. I also use vinegar as a rinse agent. That said – when I had my first front loading machine I was still using commercial detergents and didn’t experience that smell then either. I also have very hard water and so one essential appliance around here is a water softener. I don’t know whether that has an effect on the whole smell business.

  49. My current set is a front load, Whirlpool Duet, purchased in 2008 or 2009. We had to replace the control panel on the dryer last year, but it was a very easy fix. I do leave the door open, maybe a finger width, and seldom do the “clean cycle” (with bleach) and haven’t ever had any mold or smell issues. Mine are on pedestals to help my old back get things in and out, which unfortunately makes any shelf too high for folding, but that would have been great! I do have a shelf above the set, that holds all kinds of stuff….

I feel my clothes get as clean or cleaner than when I had a top load set, of course, that depends on how overloaded the machine might get (had boys at home using top load machine, that overloaded all the time!) I love my front load set and will replace with another set when necessary.

  50. Kristi
I have followed your blog for years and you have taught me many things. Thank you. I hardly ever leave comments but when you wrote about buying the LG washer, I felt you should be aware of the problem I have with mine. Maybe it’s just my particular washer, but it lacks the ability to remove loose fibers and hair. This requires thorough cleaning of the inside facing glass door and all the rubber fittings i can reach after each wash. Not a fun thing to deal with.

  51. My appliance repair man friend recommends Speed Queen! Although I can’t afford to but that brand, I can dream. I’ve been buying slightly used washers and dryers for quite awhile and have been very satisfied. He says stay away from the newer front loading style as they don’t last and have many problems.

  52. I personally like top loaders better. I had a set of the fancy, front load Samsung washer and dryer for 15 years. Never had any issues with them mechanically like many others seem to have had but I did have to leave the washer door open to keep the smell at bay. When it was time to replace, I went to top load and I feel clothes are just cleaner. I am only 5’4″ so getting to the very bottom of the washer is sometimes difficult. As far as I can tell the new top loads are far more efficient than what they used to be. Mine appear to use about the same amount of water as what front loads do.

If you decide to go front load, seriously consider pedestals instead of the work top! I ordered the matching pedestals. This brought it up to about waist high and made getting clothes out and transferred to the dryer so much easier.

  53. I’ve got this whirlpool set and can’t recommend it highly enough. My friend bought them and then a year later I bought the same set on her recommendation. I’ve had mine 4 years now, and she’s had hers 5 years? My friends just bought the same set based on my recommendation and they love them, too. The best part is the price on these, especially when they are on sale.

This is the exact dryer I have:
    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Whirlpool-7-cu-ft-Electric-Dryer-White-While-Supplies-Last/50354426

My washer is discontinued (mine was 4.3 cu ft capacity), but these are the same style, it just depends on what capacity you need:
    https://www.lowes.com/pd/GE-4-5-cu-ft-High-Efficiency-Top-Load-Washer-White/1000757220
    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Whirlpool-3-5-cu-ft-High-Efficiency-Top-Load-Washer-White-While-Supplies-Last/1000064061

  54. I have had several top load washers and only one set of front load. I actually could not stand the front load. It was too low to the ground even with the stands that we purchased . They had a terrible smell after awhile. I now have a speed queen an I love it. We have had it for almost 2 yrs. They are quite expensive but very reliable. They are all steel no plastic anything. I would not hesitate to buy another one if I had to.
Thanks for reading. Like your style.

  55. BUY GE, period! Unless the place you use to buy your appliances has their own, certified repair people, not contracted out, only buy GE. The repair people are certified by Whirlpool, which owns most companies. There are very few people who are certified repair people for LG, Samsung, Bosch. I just bought new kitchen appliances. I looked everywhere and went with our local appliance company. They send their people to training for repairs. Even the Home Depot people told me there are few repair people for the “fancy” companies. Also, secrets from the appliance world is parts are not as good when ordered at big box stores. When I bought my 4 appliances, not only was the price the same as the big box stores, but I could get them quicker. There was a good sale and a $400 rebate. I’m supporting a small, local business, which is huge for me.
As far as top or front load, I’ve had both. It all comes down to which you can get clothes in and out of comfortably. Sorry so long❣️

  56. My daughter and son-in-law needed a new washer and dryer and researched thoroughly. They decided to go with the Speed Queen brand. They love them!

  57. I have an LG top loader and matching dryer. I love it! I didn’t get one with all the bells and whistles tho. I didn’t think I’d ever use those. I got the ones that were a step down from the top.

  58. Over here in Germany, I think front loaders are far more common. As to your question about how they work when you dye clothes, I actually do not even understand your doubts, it never arose in my mind or has ever been an issue for me when dyeing! There is a German brand named Miele (I don’t have a clue whether that is even available in the US) which is very reliable and durable. Somebody who used to work in a shop selling washing machines told me (that talk was in no way related to him trying to sell me something, I have to add!) that he repeatedly had older customers coming in to buy a new Miele because their old one wasn’t looking really white and nice anymore after 30 years of service – the machines were still working faultlessly!! Mine is about 16 years old by now and working wonderfully, so was worth the higher cost for sure. What I learned from friends is always to buy a separate dryer if you want one, as the combination of the two machines make them more liable to break down. Hope you find something that works out right for your needs!!

  59. Short girl problems: Don’t buy a front loader. When helping my daughter with laundry recently, I discovered that her new model is even harder to reach than the older ones. I had to pull out a step stool! I love my LG front loaders and don’t mind leaving the door open overnight. I never leave clothes sitting in my washer. It has a detergent dispenser, but it got gummy so I now always use HE (high efficiency) pods—much easier anyway. I clean it once a month with bleach at the same time I wash the dryer vent trap.

  60. I have a full size Speed Queen front loading washer and dryer that I stacked in our laundry “closet”. I have had front-loaders for years and never an odor problem as I always keep both the door and the detergent holder ajar and wipe them down periodically. I’ve had the Speed Queen for 3 1/2 years, since we moved into our Senior Independent Living apartment. Top loaders came as standard but we could pay extra for the front loaders, which we did because I have found front loaders use less water, are gentler on my clothes and do a great job getting things clean. We could only opt for the Speed Queen because the builder said they were the most reliable and are the brand used in most commercial laundromats. I’ve been very pleased and would recommend the brand.

  61. Agree with the tip to check out gocleanco.com – lots of useful info. We just got a top loader with an impeller instead of an agitator, kind of the best of both worlds. Had a front loader and wouldn’t do that again – mold, smell etc.

  62. I have this set (just 7-8 years older) and love them. The washer door has a gizmo on it that keeps it from shutting entirely when you are not using it, which keeps it from getting smelly. I also use the tub cleaning cycle with a packet of Oxy clean for washers once a month. My washer spins so much water out, that the dryer doesn’t take long to dry a load. Upon the advice of my appliance guy, I use one tablespoon of laundry powder for a load. I couldn’t believe that was correct, but when I googled it, I found that amount was recommended. Liquid soap contains fat, which also can contribute to a smelly washer. But, on the other hand I know Speed Queens are real work horses and have a good reputation.

  63. AFter going with GE for years, about 6 months ago, I finally went with the speed queen top load (middle priced) based on the review of GoCleanCo and my friend in MO whose boys use to ride rodeo. Fortunately my Ge dryer is still going strong (through two washer replacements) so I can defray that cost until later. It has the full tub over-ride, a quick wash cycle and remarkably quiet.

  64. I bought one that has no agitator, it is a top loader. I wasn’t convinced it would clean the clothes without it. But the salesman at Lowes said it does clean just as well. So, I do, did a lot of research on all the brands. I got the biggest washer possible, without the agitator. I am 5’6″ and I can’t reach the bottom to get the clothes out. The dryer I have to crawl halfway in to reach the stuff in the back. I wanted big so I could do bigger loads which would mean less water and less electricity for the dryer. I can only assume they are getting clean in the agitatorless washer, but I actually wish I had gotten one with the agitator, just for my own peace of mind. So I ended up with Cabrio top of the line. But with sticker shock! I prefer the top loader myself. I heard people say they leave the door open on the front loader to let it dry and not smell. So there is that.

  65. Our 36 year old Kenmore washer died in January and I had to research the new ones. The front loaders are water savers and don’t use enough water to clean the clothes very well. I saw pictures on reviews where the shirts were only partially wet- had actual dry spots!- after going through a whole cycle! My daughter said Sheets soiled by sick kids have to go through 2-3 cycles to remove the odors! They’re nice looking, but that’s the only positive thing about them.
The computer controls want to set your water level, even in top loaders. And the amount of water is woefully inadequate.
I ended up getting a Hotpoint ( manufactured by GE) with the fewest knobs and dials on it, so I could set it to do what I want, not what a computer decides. I refused to get a computer control panel.
Even with the knob to control water level, it’s tricky. A medium sized load only fills the washer ( no clothes added) about one quarter full. It doesn’t have a pre-wash option which I used a lot on the Kenmore with kids and pets accidents. But it was the only one that had manual controls so I made the decision based on that.

As for warranty, they’re basically useless in my northeastern area, since there’s only one repair person for NY, NJ, MA, CT.

I found a local store ( not a big box) that sold Speed Queens about an hour away but they were closed for the long weekend that we needed a washer desperately.

If I had extra time m I’d have gone with them. They’re an old fashioned store and actually service the units they sell.

So I had a new washer paired with the still working Kenmore dryer from 1987. They were visually incompatible, no matter how much I tried to tell myself I’m better off with the old one. The matching Hotpoint dryer, like all dryers now, doesn’t get as hot, so there’s a learning curve. An 80 minute dry cycle starts blowing cool air at about 40 minutes in.

You won’t find any appliances like the good old durable Kenmore! Progress is reversed these days!

  66. Go with Maytag – we’ve had our current washer for 20+ year and it’s still going strong.
I absolutely HATE front loader washers – they are too high maintenance for me and you cannot “soak” anything. Once the cycle starts, that’s it. Love that just lifting the lid of top loader stops the cycle – you can add something or just let things soak a bit. Top loader – Water & yuck can accumulate in the rubber seal around door – and needs to be cleaned regularly. Can get smelly, too if you don’t keep up with this. We had front loader in our second AZ home & I hated them. Our new home will have the top loader washer.

  67. I have also heard that Speed Queen will run forever. I have a GE front load and there is a vent mode you run after your laundry day is complete. I have no idea how long it takes-I hit the button and walk away (usually bedtime) in the morning I open the door a crack—although I don’t think you have to (habit I guess) and there is no smell after 2-1/2 yrs. I do the cycle clean and empty the hose at the front bottom every few months—I think it’s supposed to be done monthly.

  68. Do NOT buy anything LG. You will have nothing but trouble with it, and I hate every single one of them I have ever had. I still have three pieces of their crap. I can’t wait till they conk out so I can get something else. I have heard many people say the same thing.

Anything that requires a chip will be obsolete before you know it, and then you hear “we can’t get the part anymore” like a broken record. Sadly all the new ones do now, as far as I know.

Short people need a front loader. I am 5’1″ and I know whereof I speak. I have to stand on a stool and practically fall in headfirst to get the clothes out of my hated LG. Yes it has been a big pain, too, leaking and malfunctioning in various ways. The matching dryer half the time doesn’t dry the clothes. Repair guy has been several times and usually a new problem develops as soon as he leaves. The LG fridge which cost as much as a used car has been a disaster. The LG dishwasher died in about 6 years. Yep, they couldn’t get the parts anymore.

I had a Maytag Neptune (front loader) W/D set for years till it wore out. They couldn’t get some parts anymore so I bought the LGs based on the reviews. All lies! I don’t know if Maytags are still good, but the husband says I have to use the LGs till they quit. So I don’t know what is best right now, unfortunately. When you decide I will be curious to see what you buy since you always do the due diligence.

  69. We had a set that was a top loading washer and a top loading dryer. It was great! No bending, just slide the wet clothes over into the dryer. I would try to find that again if I were buying them today.

  70. My friend has that set you are looking at and just loves it!!! And she’s only 5′.
I personally like top loaders, but I’ve never had a front loader. My stepmom’s stank but I don’t think she kept the rubber clean.
    I think it’s a personal preference.

  71. I bought Speed Queen…. I am all about performance over the long haul. I don’t need bells n’ whistles. Love them. My past Kenmore were awesome but SQ is going strong. It’s a top loader. Additionally in support of easy, fast, clean laundry plus environmental I converted to Norwex laundry detergent, stain remover & microfiber cleaner AND a Kinetico water system (have well with iron). It’s the best. I’m actually wearing & using white again. And no I’m not a rep. The combination of all of the above keeps sheets & towels fresh, sports gear from going skanky and whites white without bleach. Best wishes in your choice.

  72. Since I have a big family LG and Samsung are in the cemetery. Last time we went with a simple Speed Queen top loader as they told me they’re used in laundromats. I’d still get a SQ if I had it to do over. I’m surprised how many people have SQ and recommend them.

  73. When I moved overseas 25 years ago I had to have a front load washer.
I hated it. I have a top load one from about 2005 and the repair men tell me to keep it forever, as the quality went down after that. My dryer (natural gas) is from 1991.
I have plenty of money to switch them out if I wanted, but am happy with both so why change? I am also short, no problem reaching into the washer. But the front load ones are often put on pedestals so people don’t have to bend down.
The only front load washer to buy is one where you can select the exact temperature to use, I had that in the UK, the one redeeming feature.

    1. I dropped my subscription to C. R. Magazine recently. Had it for years. To me, they’re not as good as they used to be either, kinda gone by the wayside. IMHO

A shopping suggestion: I try to buy my appliances at Costco, because they double the manufacturer’s warrant.

  76. I have that LG set and I love it! Clothes come out super clean! Tons of options for washing and drying. Easy to keep clean. I keep the washer door cracked open an inch and it stays fresh and clean.

  77. Hi, I had to buy a new washer 2 years ago as the GE I had wore out – after 8 years, prior to that I had a LG – also 8ish years. I have heard about Speed Queen all my life so I found a dealer in Conroe Texas (I live on the SW side of Houston and I couldn’t find anyone on my side of town) who carried this model: Speed Queen TC5003WN. It has changed my life! My husband has had several medical issues that make washing/rinsing/bleaching/etc. daily crucial to his health. The GE had no soak cycle or pre-rinse or 2nd rinse so if I needed to pre-rinse I had to do a quick wash, then wash again, if I forgot to change the wash cycle setting – oh well – digital would not allow me to change (not even unplugging it worked – it just drained the water). Also the loads were smaller as the water level was lower (for the environment – so I had to wash twice…). My Speed Queen does it all! The only drawback is there are only 2 water levels – super and eco. So if you need to wash many small loads this is not for you. I want to get the matching dryer but my 24 year old Maytag I “inherited” from my parents won’t die!!!

  78. Speed Queen! Worth every penny…bulky setting for sheets/towels. Both washer and dryer cycles are fast!
My 4’11” college sophomore granddaughter simply uses a small footstool to unload our top-load model when she visits.

  79. One more comment-which after reading so many not sure why I’m putting in my two cents.
1- buy top or front loader based on what you like/research.
2- let’s be honest- laundry is very is to accomplish – bending? Reaching? Easily accomplished
3- My final load is whites with bleach and hot water- LG front load- 12 years old – never serviced-never smelled- yes folks I wipe it occasionally- many every few months
4- only use white vinegar as a final rinse- never fabric softener- bad for clothes, environment and you.
5- use natural powder detergent- not transporting water across our country
6 – platform- waste of money ( got them free on holiday sale) gave them to my son. Too bulky with little actual storage space.
Hope you find what you like!

  80. I Just wanted to say….I LOVE THIS STUFF. Buying appliances is so confusing and all of you have really given a TON of valuable information. You all should be contributors to Consumer Reports.

  81. All I can say is a have a LG washer and love it. I’ve never had a problem with smell because I always use vinegar instead of softener and ALWAYS leave the door open after I empty it.

  82. I have a front load washer and have never had a musty smell problem. I now use Lysol Laundry Sanitizer and family state that they can close the door after washing and there is no odor. And I have never cleaned it more than wiping the dust from the glass door. I too have only had Kenmores. I bought front load because of water conservation. Very happy with mine.

  83. Just a quick comment – my washer is outside, and I went through 3 before I realized wind-blown rain was getting to them. Now I have a cover over the area, and a large capacity top loader, and the first thing I did was go on Amazon and buy the longest pair of tongs I could find (I think they are 18″) with silicone on the end so the metal does not hurt clothing. Works great, and I don’t have to stand on my head to get the last items out. I also leave the cover up for a while after a wash because of a humid climate.

  84. I’ve had a front load washer beginning with the 80s when I lived in France. I like them so much more than top loaders because they are much easier on your clothes, use less water, and when used with a good quality detergent like Persil or Tide and occasionally pretreatment, will get the clothes stain free. There are a few things you need to consider. First, that musty smell, it’s from closing the door of the washer before the interior is dry. Front loaders are much tighter sealed so water doesn’t evaporate if the door isn’t open. I never fully close my washer door unless I’m sure the interior is dry and I have never had a problem with mold and mildew. Second, there’s something about the tumbling movement that doesn’t work for all towel types. I had some beautiful long loop towels and the loops twisted into hard knots over time; doesn’t happen with the thick, velvety towels I use now. Lastly, I wouldn’t dye anything in my Electrolux front loader given its cost but I don’t think you can anyway give how little water it uses.
My sister has a top load Fisher & Paykel that she loves. She uses it with the low profile agitator so the clothes don’t get pulled like they do with a typical agitator. Her clothes come out stain free with quality detergent and occasional pretreatment.

  85. I have a Samsung washer and dryer. The dryer is fine but would never buy a Samsung machine again. The washer leaked when new but they never solved the problem. It still leaks a small amount occasionally now but it’s on a tile floor and I don’t worry too much about it.

I bought a top of the line model and would never waste my money on that again. It has all these builds in cycles I never use because they control too many factors. For example the bedding cycle won’t let me use cold water but my sheets say to wash them in cold water so what use is that cycle?

Leave the door open after the last load to prevent mold. I don’t use fabric softener either and I think that helps.

Front loaders (and maybe any new machine) take much longer to run a load than your old Kenmore probably did.

  86. I have top load whirlpool that is older. Also whirlpool dryer. The heating element went out of my dryer recently, had my repairman come replace it. He said in his opinion Speen Queens are the very best, but my older whirlpool is a good one as well. He said absolutely do not buy LG or Samsung because the new ones are garbage. He also told me, the less bells and whistles are the best. Easiest to work on etc. Research and find out the manufacturer and who makes what, because many are made overseas and you can’t go by reviews. I wouldn’t have a front load because once you start it, you can’t stop for anything until it’s done. I also want an agitator. But that’s JMHO.

  87. We’ve had a Maytag front load for several years and I’ve hated it the entire time. I don’t like needing to clean the gasket and leaving the door open. It just doesn’t seem to clean as well as our old top load, and I often end up with spots/ stains on my clothes that weren’t there when they went into the washer. My hope is for speed queen once this one finally dies.

  88. I have a top load LG and I hate it. I, like you, can’t reach the bottom, so I have a step stool at the ready. No agitator, per se, just a little Knobby looking thing that is supposed to help with agitation. It picks up odor (mildew) same as front loaders, so I have to run a “clean cycle” every other week. Didn’t even know I had that for a few years! It’s an energy saver, so I am at the mercy of the machine on how much water is used. Did I say I hate it? Also have the matching LG dryer, and it’s just okay. I have a friend who swears by Speed Queens, and says she will never buy anything else. My daughters both have front loaders and are not crazy about them, but I don’t know the make. It’s a crap shoot if you ask me!

  89. My mom and I both have front loaders. Mine doesn’t smell musty but hers does because I can leave the door slightly open (you can’t tell from the front very much) all the time. She can’t do that because her laundry is in a corridor that is used all the time, so her door has to stay shut. I love my front loader and use the counter above for folding, but I’m 5’8″. I wonder if you’d find that high of a counter very useful. The counter is about 35″ deep, too, so a bit harder to reach when cleaning and it does get much dustier than other areas of my house, as you can imagine a laundry room would. Just some food for thought.

  90. I have had both top loaders and front loaders. If you get the right brand (for the reliability factor), I really like the front loaders better. The variety of cycles has proven to be very useful for me.
With regard to the mustiness problem, I have found that if I leave the door cracked open on the washer for a while after I use it so that the inside of the machine has a chance to dry, I don’t have any odor.

  91. Speed Queen is the best! Forget about all the electronics that eventually go bad with these newer types of machines. Speed Queen is what my mother had and it lasted forever with no repairs needed. My husband says the same as that’s what his mother had. We wouldn’t get anything else, ever!

  92. I went down this same rabbit hole years ago after owning a Maytag top load efficient machine. This efficient washer had no agitator, and did not even get my clothes wet on many occasions, much less clean. Did a ton of research, and bought a Maytag Commercial machine which is equivalent to a speed queen. Bottom line, get a Speed Queen or a Maytag Commercial. My local appliance store did not have the SQ, but they had the Maytag, so that is what I purchased. I can say I have had it for over 5 years and been super happy.

  93. I don’t know the brands you have in the US, but what I can say is that front loaders use about one third of the water and are generally considered to be much kinder to clothes. They have shorter cycles (which I use a lot, but not always) and long cycles (ie extra rinse cycle, pre-washes, soaking etc). It’s difficult, with many models, to put that extra sock in once the cycle has started! I wouldn’t go back to a top loader as we pay water rates where I am. You adjust to change. I have Miele which is great, and my machines stack. I’m not tall either, but it’s doable if it suits your floorplan. I do recall that it’s worth finding out if you have a steel or concrete drum (this is why these machines are very heavy) and is it AC or DC in terms of how it oscillates .. but this is getting a bit technical for me now … but it’s this part that goes to hidden quality and durability. Good luck!

  94. Just did a google search for Speed Queen. They are made to last 25 years. That’s what my dealer said and I’ve not had one issue with it after 5 years, have another 20 to go.

  95. We have a front loading washer and dryer. We gave up our Whirlpool front loader set for Samsung. Don’t buy Samsung. I think the best thing about front loaders is they are stackable. Next time I think we will go back to a top loading washer. I was told many years ago Whirlpool builds washer/dryers for Sears. We recently had some work done on my late mom’s Sears washer. It was leaking water and there were a couple of other issues. But it was a hose that had cracked that was causing the leaking, not the tub. The repairman said he had only seen a crack in a hose like that once before and he has been doing this kind of work for over 60 years. It cost about $200 for the parts and labor fixing three things on the washer. One thing he told me was this was the best set ever built. They run and run and run. They don’t build them like this anymore per the repairman. Maybe you should have your set checked out before shopping for a new one to make sure it can’t be fixed. Good Luck.

  96. Our realtor told us that her dad is a retired appliance repairman. The only washers and dryers he had not worked on in 40 years were Speed Queens. She was not allowed to buy an LG or Samsung per her dad’s advice.
    Hope this helps!

  97. Unfortunately, by the time I can tell you that I love my machine and it’s lasted forever, that model is, of course, no longer available. I also have heard the hype about Speed Queen. I believe commercial machines can use more water and that’s why people love them. I’d be interested in knowing if the Speed Queens of today are as good as in the past.

  98. I have an LG high efficiency washer and love it! To prevent odors, one has to wipe off the gasket and keep the door open to let the basin dry. I don’t mind that, as it’s not any more than it would be to wipe a top-loader basin with a cloth. I also have the dryer to match and it is stacked above the washer. I am 5’3″ and have to really reach to get the clothes out. I consider it a good stretch! That might require you to use a step stool. Aside from that, I highly recommend the LG. It is gentle on the clothes, uses less water and detergent, and even has a hand washable cycle. I wash all of my sweaters in mine and they come out great every time.

  99. Bought our Speed queen washer a year ago. $1200. Worth every penny
    Very reliable, made in America
    Top loader
    Simple mechanics.

  100. I had endless issues with front loaders, including a lint issue, of all things. From what I could tell, the front washer didn’t use enough water (because “high efficiency”) and so extra lint would build up in the clothes and then my house became covered in a lovely thin layer of lint. I began sneezing a lot, and if I got dressed in a ray of sunshine (as one does when the light is just so 😉 there would be a cloud of lint everywhere in the air all around me. It was awful. I returned everything after a long, horrible fight that included the BBB. I then purchased the Maytag Top Load Commercial Grade Laundry Pair. I’m in Canada, but I’m sure there’s a US version: https://www.maytag.ca/en_ca/washers-and-dryers/commercial-grade-laundry.html (hopefully that link went through the filter).

Mine came with a five year warranty instead of 1 year. This guy on YouTube helped me make my decision based on his amazing videos where he compares the washing ability of several machines: https://www.youtube.com/@LorainFurnitureandAppliance/videos I even called his store!

I am very happy with my purchase. I have not had one issue. I use the Power wash with an extra rinse and my wash is done in less than one hour. Compare that with the “high efficiency” front loader of over two hours. My clothes never seemed clean. Also, my washer doesn’t control the water temperature. The hot water wash is the temperature of my hot water tank. The front load wahser added cold water because it is “smart”. Sometimes I need to wash things at 140 degrees! Especially if you have medical needs, a hot water wash can be crucial for disinfecting items.

Good luck in your search. I know it’s a tough decision, but make sure you make the right one from the start. I thought I had done my due diligence when I purchased my first front loader, and I never thought to anticipate a lint issue (of all things!), but I can never recommend a front loader to anyone after my horrible experience.

  101. Speed Queen! Get a Speed Queen. And under no circumstances should you look at anything without a real agitator (and not the ones that look like an agitator, but are fake and don’t move separate of the tub to agitate clothing because they are nothing more than a mere stick in the middle to keep sheets from migrating across the middle and rolling like a donut—which will happen if you buy the one with nothing in the middle and that will irritate you more than you know because the donut will prevent any real washing from happening and thereby negate your attempts to increase your washing capacity because you will repeat wash everything you own until you call the company and complain. At which point they will offer to send a repair person for a crazy cost and will not listen when you try to explain to them you believe it is a design flaw. Which will only add to your frustration.) or you will rewash the same load of vomit ladden bedding from 10pm to 3am until you finally give up. Then you will take the same bedding to your mother in laws in the morning and wash it once and done! Amazing difference. My heart is ever loyal to Speed Queen!

  102. I had a Kenmore/LG front loader in my old place and loved it. It never smelled musty. I make quilts and front loaders don’t damage them like agitators do. I’m also short and can’t reach inside top loaders as easily.

We bought a GE front loader set here and I hate it. The gasket on the washer has all these folds and crevices that catch dog hair and hold moisture. It always smells inside, even if we leave the door open. We went with GE because there’s no one who services LG’s in our area. Appliances are so hit or miss lately. We have the 5 year service plan, and thank goodness since I already need to call someone. It will be worth the $150 for sure. If I ever buy another set, I’m looking at the gasket design before anything else.

  103. No, they have NOT solved the musty smell problem in front-load washers in the last few years. I follow ALL the cleaning guidelines, have researched and tried all the YouTube advice, and tried numerous products. With GREAT diligence, I can keep barely it under control.

The problem is in the door gasket design – sure, it’s easy to clean the gasket, but it’s almost impossible to get BEHIND/UNDER the gasket where all the gunk and mold reside. Whenever I’m in a home center or appliance store, I check the washers to see if the design has changed at all – NOPE! I won’t buy one again until this is fixed.

  104. Kristi, I am not familiar with LG units, but I have had both the Samsung and Maytag sets over the last 13 years and will never go back to top loaders. I haven’t read the other comments here, so these may have been suggested already, but I have two suggestions for you with a front loader.

    1. Definitely buy the matching pedestals (or with your talent, I’m sure you could make something to lift them up that would look awesome). That makes it easier to reach into the back of the units without having to bend down so far, as well as gives a little extra storage in the pedestals.

    2. When you are finished washing, prop the drop open to give the inside a chance to dry out. I also bought the cleaner tablets (Affresh, I think), but the only time I really use one is after I wash a load of dog bedding. Othewise, I haven’t felt a need to use it and I have never had not even one problem with either of my washers where they smelled sour, moldy or musty. After I have finished washing for that day, I usually leave the door propped completely open for a couple of hours (mine stays open by itself). At the very least, I prop the door shut but just lightly lean it on the machine so it is not completely closed. Air can still get in and dry out your machine. That one action alone would likely prevent your washer from ever smelling musty.

    Good luck making your decision!

    1. BTW Kristi, never use fabric softener in your washer or fabric softener sheets in the dryer. It all leaves film and buildup on both clothes and the machines/filters. I use nothing or white vinegar, depending on what items were washed.

  105. Dear Kristi,
I live in Denmark and top-loaders can not even be purchased! 😊
I have had the same machine for more than 15 years. The brand is Miele and it is together with the brand AEG considered the best brands throughout most of Europe.
Just leave the door slightly open when not in use and you will not have any smell!

  106. Yale Appliance outside Boston publishes a wealth of information about all kinds of appliances, including W/D’s. They base ratings and reviews on their own service calls, which number in the thousands every year. So they know what works and what causes trouble. You can download their excellent washer buying guide here: https://blog.yaleappliance.com/free-washer-buying-guide. My own house, which I bought three years ago, came with an commercial-type Maytag top loader. I’m guessing it’s 20+ years old. No bells or whistles, runs fast, my clothes are clean. My local highly esteemed appliance repair guy was here fixing an issue with the hose line (not the machine) and told me never to get rid of it. He also said he refuses to work on LGs and Samsungs. I’m 5’3″ and it’s fine getting things out. The dryer, on the other hand, I practically have to crawl into to reach things at the back. At 69 years of age, no fun. When I replace it, I’m getting the swing door and putting it on a pedestal.

  107. I’ve had my first set of (Whirlpool) front loaders for over 13 years. There have been issues with the dryer in the last year, but hubby has been able to keep it going. Zero issues with the washer. I always always leave the washer door (I use a chunk of pool noodle to keep it open) & detergent drawer cracked when not in use and run the clean cycle once or twice a month. I’ve not had smell issues. Clothes come out clean. I used homemade powdered detergent for years and years and it worked fine. I’ve used detergent strips and liquid detergent. It all works just fine, even on cold washes.

My only beef is you can’t just throw in an extra item whenever you want. There’s a very brief period where it will allow you to pause the cycle and toss something in. I do miss being able to just thrown in a random sock or something that got missed but isn’t very dirty. But all in all, I’d buy another Whirlpool set if I needed to.

I don’t know if this is a feature that you’d need…but the higher end models of the dryers will come with a waterline hookup to “refresh” clothes. We use this as a de-wrinkle cycle ALLLLLLLLL the time. Like daily. Of course, if we took our clothes out of the dryer immediately and hung them up they wouldn’t wrinkle. Or if I loved to iron we wouldn’t need the refresh cycle. But I don’t and, for us, that refresh cycle is a must have. (And I know, you can toss a damp washcloth in. And we’ve done that. It’s not the same. The spray mist of water dampens all the clothes uniformly and actually works to take out most wrinkles.)

  108. While I don’t have this particular set, I do have an LG washer and dryer, top loader with no agitator. I purchased this set in 2015 and have never had an issue with it and have been very satisfied with LG (my fridge is also an LG bought at the same time, no issues). Although you can’t put an entire countertop, I have put a shelf where I can put pretties out 🙂

  109. SPEED QUEEN!! Basic set. Top loader with agitator. You can choose your water level and open the lid during the wash to add a forgotten item. No smells. They last forever and are worth every penny. I had a Kenmore prior to this but my appliance repairman told me that nothing is made like it used to be — so buy a Speed Queen. I did and it’s still going strong. You won’t regret buying Speed Queen.

  110. I now have a front loader. It’s great for bulky items like comforters, coats, etc. So much easier to remove than with top loaders.
I too leave mine open after the last load of the day to prevent mustiness. As I have a dog, I make sure to pull back and wipe the seal around the door occasionally to catch random bits of dog hair and stuff that might accumulate. I would purchase again.

  111. I have the Kenmore 70-Series Dryer, and I love it. Purchased in the DFW-Metroplex June 2004, Sears Outlet. So it’s probably a 2003-build. The interior bulb comes and goes at will, and we only replaced the heating element last year; it’s original heating element, unbeknownst to us, only had half of it working. Well, it wasn’t a problem. The new one we installed ourselves off Amazon, cost us $13 and 2-day shipping, and it heats up SO WELL that the dryer automatically stops when the load gets too hot.

We had the Kenmore 70-series washer, but when the sensor for the water to stop loading quit working on December 31st, 2010, I convinced my husband to go to Best Buy for their New Year’s sales. (Thank God! They were open). New Year’s 2011,we purchased a 2010 model LG Front Loader, and gave up the Kenmore washer.

I wish I had kept my top-loader Kenmore washer, and am on the constant lookout for people who don’t want theirs. (Or a Speed Queen)

Front loaders: you have to wipe down the rubber lining after every wash. Leave open the doors. Drain the machine every month. Laundry is already a chore, why would I add more work to my schedule?

If it’s in your budget, get yourself a Speed Queen.

  112. Speed Queen is the best, hands down. Their bread and butter has been commercial units made for laundromats, apartments, etc. With use like that, you know they’re made to take a beating. For us it wasn’t even a matter of durability (although for the price of washing machines these days, it better last forever). We just wanted clean clothes. My husband works in the trades and gets dirty regularly. Today’s water saving machines with little to no agitation just couldn’t cut it.

  113. You can buy magnetic clip things on Amazon that will keep the door open a few inches. Ours are in an unfinished space, so I just leave the door wide open. We’ve never had a musty smell issue.

  114. I bought the set you have pictured just last year (after my previous 20 some year old dryer gave up the ghost, the washer was on its way out as well.) I had been watching the LG set for a while – my friend has a set and has been very pleased with them. I confess to wanting the black steel set because they are in my entryway/mudroom and I was tired of looking at two white machines there – the black goes better with my overall decor. I love the fact they are not actually black but a dark charcoal colour. Also – the fact they are front loaders means i have a lot of landing space there, including about 30″ of counter/cabinet between them. I prefer front loading washers – they don’t use nearly as much water and are pretty quiet.

I’ve had these two for about a year now and I am very pleased. The drums are huge and I’m able to wash and dry my down duvet now with no issues – previously I had to take it out to be cleaned. I still haven’t figured out all the different possible settings but isn’t that always the way? One generally uses a couple of the settings the majority of the time. I also haven’t bothered setting up the wifi function either because I don’t have any need to control them remotely.

  115. Two times I have written you a book and when I get to the name part my “book” either sends itself or vanishes. I don’t have time to redo so it you get a post with no name, it might be from me.

  116. I currently have two LG front load sets. One is for work and it is almost 15 years with only one repair. Which, while I had to take the entire direct drive apart to repair, was very simple to do.

The other set is three years old and looks like the same unit you are looking at. So far I have zero problems with it. The rubber and drain holes area still clean, so they aren’t collecting any gunk. I leave the door ajar and no musty smell. Dryer is great. I keep my laundry simple, so I don’t use most of the settings…but I find the wash result is the same as my previous unit (Bosch). At this point, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Every machine needs to be cleaned, so it just depends on what task you want to do.

As far as pulling laundry out of the washer….I am 5’2”. I would rather squat down to pull out heavy laundry than reach down and pull up and out…that would be too hard on my back. I would consider a pedestal but I’m ok with it as is.

  117. OK, I just had to write. We got a new washer and dryer–decided on a top load washer, front load dryer, as we’d always had. Except, and this is a big exception: The top load washer has no agitator It’s an impeller system), which seems really great–easier on the clothes, etc. However, and this is a BIG However–this washer smells if we keep the lid down. Water collects and SMELLS. Bad. Big-time bad. We are always running bleach cycles and trying to get it smell-less. This is a huge problem, I’ve found through research, with the newer machines, particularly those without agitators (for reasons I don’t know–it may be that how they empty is different, and some water collects and starts to smell). The other problem with a non-agitator top loader is that I am short, too. The drum is nice and big, so great for washing comforters and such– but the bottom of the drum is hard to reach in places. I have to use my grabber, which I got when I had a knee replacement, to get some of the clothes out. Our set is a mid-priced LG.

We never had problems with our old agitator, top load washer. It evidently emptied water completely so that there was never a smell, and I could reach to the bottom. These two things are more important to me than I ever knew until I got our current washer.

Regarding a side load washer: we are moving to a house that has one, and it happens to be the one recommended by the New York Times, the LG WM4000H. We will be hoping for the best with it! If it smells, though, it goes! 😉 My sister has a side loader on which she had to keep replacing gaskets due to leakage. Hers is a GE, I think.

  118. Speed Queen! They are commercial built and built to last. You won’t find them in a big box store, you will have to find a dealer and they tend to run a little more expensive but well worth the money. Jot a lot of bells and whistles…just good, clean laundry, Just my humble opinion.

  119. I’ve owned a fair share of washer/dryer sets – ie front load, top load, all in one –
I finally have found the winner for our family!!
After months of research/back & forth I purchased the Fisher Paykel – having never owned a front load/condensing type (non vented dryer) I was doing a lot of review
I’ve owned Speed Queen/Samsung/LG/Miele. We are a family of 4 with a heavy sports influence ie loads upon loads of super dirty softball uniforms lol
The Fisher Paykel cleans like no other, spins like it’s headed to the moon (with negligible noise) and my main concern the condensing dryer hasn’t been any sort of concern at all. Take a look and see what you think –

  120. Top loader for me. I replaced my washer & dryer after labor day last year. I wanted a basic, no motherboard, no frills model. A friend of mine had her front loader shut down on her…door wouldn’t open, clothes were floating in soapy water, and because of a holiday weekend, repair guy was a week out. By the time her clothes were released, they were so mildewy, they could not be saved. Although a counter top sounds lovely, my husband would junk it up for me. Even though I got basic models, they still seem a bit more complex than the pair I (sadly) replaced. But I did get 23 solid years out of them! Good luck

  121. I have the same washing machine, and mine is 20 years old. My Dad always swore by Kenmore appliances, and I have had great luck with them. If and when I need to replace mine, I would look for a top-loader.

  122. My daughter has the fancy new front loading washer/dryer set. She has to leave the doors hanging open or it smells bad. Who wants doors hanging open and in the way??

  123. You just made me realize my washer is 14 years old and I dread the day it breaks. It’s an Electrolux front loader (in Poland vast majority are front loaders, top loaders are hard to get, but really no one is looking for them). It’s absolutely low maintenance, the first time I heard about the mold/stench issue was here in the comment section. After washing I leave the door slightly ajar, but that’s all I do about it. I also have an Electrolux dryer to match, and I love that they are stackable (small apartment and no separate washing room, so I have it in the bathroom). Dryers are not very popular here and most people leave things to dry naturally. I do have a dryer but I know no-one else that has it. Again, I guess it’s European lack of space and small apartments, so front loader will always beat top loader here. That being said, my mother has a top loader, one of the narrow, small ones and she hates it. We’re both short, and she has to bend very uncomfortably, plus somehow she always ends up wet after doing the laundry.
About LG and Samsung – they’re very popular, but there’s a common thing the repair services say about them: they last while they last. They can go for years without a hitch, but once something breaks, it’s usually not worth the repair. Just like with Samsung/LG fridges. There are brands that are more reliable, I have a soft spot for Electrolux, Bosh (I’ve had it for 7 years in my previous apartment), Siemens or Miele, but the truth is, as someone mentioned, the pandemic changed a lot in the supply chains and quality has greatly deteriorated regardless of the manufacturing country or company.
About the dye: I had no idea you could dye in a washing machine, but recently I did it! I used Simplicol dye, no fuss, no issue. Colors are great, washer is clean. I’m going to do that again.

  124. I’ve had the same Kenmore washer and dryer as you since 2002. At least one load of laundry every other day. No doors ever left open and never any musty smells. A few minor repairs and all still working. So I’m top-loading simplicity all the way.

Before 2002, when I lived in NYC, I bought a highly praised Swedish Asco stacking front-loading washer and dryer that cost a small fortune, always smelled musty, made conversation impossible, took an eternity to wash and even longer to dry, and acted as a space heater — good in winter, intolerable in summer. They put be off front-loaders for good.

  125. Having owned laundromats in my lifetime and worked for a commercial Maytag distributor for 20 years I am sold on frontload machines. What I tell everyone don’t oversoap these machines. They will not spin properly if they think they have water in them… soap bubbles can give sensors false readings. As far as smell in the boot area around door I just leave my door ajar and let it air dry. My biggest complaint with all new appliances is computer controls. Boards burn out and they are expensive to replace. Appliances are no longer made to last. Most are made offshore. Maytag was an excellent company with a 5 year parts warranty another thing that is gone as Whirlpool bought the company. No competition leaves us with little choice. I purchased LG refrigerator and gas stove and am happy…my next washer/dryer will probably be LG. Look at utility savings calculator.

  126. I have had 2 front loaders in the past 25 years. I leave the door open after a wash and I have never had a musty smell.

  127. My 2-year-old washer and dryer are both front-loading models, and my washer has a “self-clean” setting, which is recommended every 40 loads or so. Rather than try to keep track of this, I simply run the self-clean on the first day of each month, and my cellphone notifies me accordingly.

That said, I’ve never noticed any sort of peculiar smell.

  128. Front load. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I don’t like mine at all. It’s very hard to avoid that musty smell. I’m really tired of it and can’t wait to get a new top load washer.

  129. I just bought this exact washer and dryer. I absolutely love them. I researched alot also. I already had purchased an LG stove, Refrigerator and dishwasher. Love them all. You can’t go wrong with that L G washer and dryer. Chris

  130. I would stay away from all LG, SAMSUNG products. Whirlpool, GE ELETROLUX, MAYTAG, MIDEA are good awesome products ( research there off brands that are made by these companies) the reason I say this is I was a laundry repair guy for 3 years for sears and every day I was repairing LG AND SAMSUNG. Rarely worked on the products I mentioned.

  131. I have owned Samsung and LG front loaders and I have not been impressed! I recommend purchasing a Speed Queen Top Loader (which will work exactly like your old Kenmore), or getting their Front Loader – both types of machines are available. The new government efficiency standards do not apply to commercial models, so you get past the limited quantity of water in the tub and get a soak cycle back!!!

  132. Impeller or agitator? I’d go with agitator. I wish I had. The machine macrames long sleeves and pants legs no matter what i do. I miss the agitator. Whose idea was it to get of it ?I would tell them “if it ain’t broke, dont fix it!” Also, I’m 5’7″ and nearly have to climb in this Samsung washer to empty it. And I don’t need washing machine to play me a long tune when it’s done (maybe because it takes sooooo long it’s scared to just plain old buzz) I can’t even imagine what it would cost to repair anything on this Samsung washer. Doesn’t matter because I will not be repairing it. I’m kind of looking forward to it’s failure. So I can buy ANOTHER BRAND

  133. Keep both. Simple to work on. Parts are readily available and cheap. As for small leak, probably the hose in or out of the pump.
Hug your washer daily. I’m 73 and have one similar to yours. Have changed agitator dogs and motor coupling a couple of times over the years. Parts, under $10 each.

  134. I have a front load. Kenmore Elite, made by LG and is probably very similar. Yes, I have to use the clean cycle regularly. Not so much for odor, but because the inside of the machine is filled with lint, pet hair and soap residue. I am also considering a new set, and I am considering switching to a top loader for this reason. The clothes seem clean but based on the inside of the washer, it’s doubtful they are as clean as they could be. I just feel like the front loader doesn’t use enough water. Also, a word of caution, the cycles on a front loader are much longer than a top loader.

  135. My wife and I have own front load LG washer and dryer set for nearly 15 years. In regards to musty smells, yes most definitely true. However, by accident we have discovered by leaving wash door open, allowing fresh air into wash chamber oder doesn’t develop. Since our discovery I have noticed new front load manufacturers have specifically designed door to remain partially open when not in use, allowing fresh air inside.
Hopefully I have helped in your decision.
