Laundry Area — My Opportunity To Use Penny Tile?
After reading all of your comments about the laundry area that will be at the back portion of my walk-in closet, I think I am going to use a different flooring in that area. And as I was considering the possibilities — tile, vinyl, etc. — I asked myself one question. Is there something I’ve wanted to do in our house that I haven’t had the opportunity to do yet?
The answer that immediately came to my mind was PENNY TILE! I love penny tile, but it just hasn’t been right for any area of our house yet. But this laundry area will be pretty small, and I’ll be the only one using it. It will be in an out-of-the-way area, and not in a main traffic area of the house. So this may be my opportunity to finally use penny tile and to do something fun with it.
For example, I love this fun laundry room floor from Jenna Sue Design.
But I also love a simple geometric design like this one from Josephine Jewelry Co.
If I weren’t set on doing wallpaper on the closet ceiling (which I am), I’d probably take a chance and do something like this amazing penny tile floor from Harken Cafe in South Carolina. Is this not amazing?!
I also love this pretty border. This is done with hex tiles, but it could be done with penny tiles as well.
Anyway, I haven’t made any decisions yet, but this is one of the main things that was occuying my mind yesterday as I was sanding PVC boards and assembling shutters for my workshop. That type of work doesn’t challenge my mind at all, so I often find my thought wandering into planning and dreaming about future projects and house details, and that little laundry room floor had me dreaming.
I haven’t decided for sure exactly what I’m going to do, but I do think it would be fun (and probably my only opportunity) to use penny tile. Wouldn’t it be fun if I did a colorful border or design using the same colors from the wallpaper that I’m going to use on the ceiling? I think it would be such a fun surprise hiding behind that 15-lite pocket door separating the two areas.
What about a penny tile “rug” in the center of the room that can be seen through the doors? The border might not pop like something in the center would. Just a thought….
Great idea!
I love this idea! Surprises are such fun.
Ooooh I love it, it’s like pixel art on the floor! And it reminds me of that framed flower piece you made (with wooden discs? I forget), so you’ve already got something that ties it in to the rest of the house 😁
I love this idea!
I recommend making a sample board, Cut your penny sheet into 4-6 parts, place theon a less than perfect surface, then grout. I had a friend share how difficult it was to lay evenly and grout that floor appropriately if you want to tackle it as a DIYer.
With your degree of perfection you may get stuck in a difficult decision. You are capable, but it’s a tedious project, that has tasks that are a strain on the body like the walls in the music room.
Very true. Pro tilers in my family. My brother is The Single Best Tiler in the World. He hates penny tile because it is never EVER “perfect”. It’s the nature of the material. If you can embrace that aspect, you could do a totally AMAZING floor! A test run is a good plan though.
100% YES to something fun and colorful with penny tile.
Do it!😁 I strongly believe that laundry rooms should be fun- since doing laundry isn’t.
Could you scan in a piece of the ceiling paper and make a graph that would look like the paper and execute it in the Penny or hexagon tile?
Girl, this idea is right up your alley!!
Can’t wait to see what cool design you come up with!
It will be awesome!
DITTO!!!
YES! Love the idea of penny tile, in whatever design you come up with. For myself, a plain design highlighting the hex shape would appeal with maybe a contrasting grout. You like pattern and color much more than me – which is why I love your blog and designs for your house. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Keep the posts coming – I find that I open them first when given a chance.
I love the penny tile idea! I’m all for tile in the laundry room just in case something awful happens—and the designs you’ve shared are gorgeous! Can’t wait to see what you decide on!
One tip—we have ceramic tile in our ante room off our bedroom and bath, and it sounded like an airplane was taking off before we had a these mats under our washer and dryer:

Go for it!
I hear you! I get some of my best ideas when I’m painting something. It’s soothing and mindless. All those floors look great.
WOW, love those examples, and love some of the ideas you are getting as well. What a great idea for the tile floor in the laundry area, and it will be so YOU as well! Now that makes doing laundry more fun! Using the colors like you said will make it beautiful as well! I’m sure your mind is working overtime right now! 😂
I’ll just throw this into the mix, what about real pennies? Shine them up with salt and vinegar and epoxy in a mosaic.

I love this idea. Restoration tile also has some cute examples. https://restorationtile.com/shoppicsmain/othershoppics-2/
Love penny tiles. I am sure your decision will be beautiful
I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! It’s going to look amazing!
I like the top one but without words.
Great idea. I loved the bloom but it would clash with your ceiling paper. The border would not however with using the same colors or color family. I really like the border. You were going to tell why you wanted to fire the contractor.
Really love this idea!
I love brick floors, finally after being at this house I used unglazed brick (slender/thin) in a bathroom and painted it (using leftover paint) and it’s beautiful. Wish I could use in my kitchen, entry hall, laundry room. In my laundry room I used small hexagon white tile and ITS a PAIN to keep clean in a laundry room (dusty). I would think its the same issue using penny tile. Using penny tile in a bath/shower, it gets rinsed off each time. Again I used unglazed brick, original colors red/sandstone/brown and painted it with latex paint (each brick was painted before laying/is slightly painted/antiqued with creme, black, beige, blue/yellow; just like an old brick floor. It cleans up easily.
I love the look but I’d hate to be the one to clean it. Also, if you want to change the look later, that’s a lot to take up. If you’re set on tile, I rather see the classic tile you used in the master bath and a pretty rug that coordinates with the closet ceiling and your nice washer and dryer.
BTW, that 38 year old wood floor in the laundry room has had a hand painted floor cloth of one design or another protecting the area from spills and splashes of detergent, bleaches, etc. You could do one to match or coordinate with your ceiling.
We just layed linoleum in our laundry room last week and I love it. The room is 12×14 and looks so much bigger. We purchased the flooring at Lowes, White Marble Look. I had found some great choices for vinyl at a place in London but they only sold 6 ft in widths “which wouldn’t do. You have lots of choices and I love penny tile!
I love this idea so much!
