More Beautiful Gray Kitchens

As you know, I’m on the hunt for the perfect shade of gray for J & A’s lower kitchen cabinets, so I thought I’d get a little inspiration from others who have used gray in their kitchen. It’s really amazing to me how versatile gray is. I found it used in everything from rustic country kitchens to the most contemporary kitchens.

via Decor Pad.  There’s something so fresh and beautiful about gray paired with white.
Those marble countertops are simply divine, but not quite in the budget for J & A’s house.

I like the brown undertones in this gray, but I’m not sure I like it with brass hardware.

via Two Ellie.  This white and gray combo is what I’ll be doing in J & A’s kitchen.

via Keeping Up With The Grays.  They recently completed Phase 1 of their
kitchen makeover, and I really love this soft gray that they chose.

via Kitchen Bath Ideas.  Does that look like a butcherblock countertop on the island?
That’s what I’ll be using in J & A’s kitchen.  Looks gorgeous!

via The Lettered Cottage.  Just a few months ago, Kevin and Layla painted their cabinets gray and white.  At first I thought they were crazy, because I absolutely loved the black they had previously.  But I admit, this has such a fresh look.

One thing that this little exercise has confirmed is that there really is no “perfect” shade of gray. So I think the anonymous commenter who told me not to overthink the decision had it right. If I select a light to medium warm gray, even if it turns out to look a bit darker on the cabinets than it does on the paint chip, it’ll still look gorgeous!

So what are your thoughts on gray cabinets? Would you ever use gray? Would you go for a light gray, or more towards the charcoal? Just on the lowers, or lowers AND uppers?

  1. We did grey in our last house. But on the walls with white cabinets. In this house I have shades of gold and a dirty green…been thinking of making a change. I like the idea of going back to grey–but on the cabinets instead of the walls.

  2. I have a light speckly grey countertop and black/clean steel appliances. My cabinets are a yellowy shade of light grain hickory. Part of me really likes the natural wood (perhaps stained a bit darker) but I have been SERIOUSLY contemplating going grey as opposed to stained, at least on the bottom. I think a dark-ish grey would really balance out the dark appliances in my little kitchen. You have gathered sooooo much great inspiration here. I will definitely be bookmarking this post.
It seems like you are definitely on the right track. I have been overthinking it as well. Maybe it's time to follow your lead.
Can't wait to see the finished product of J & A's kitchen.

  3. Those are gorgeous shades of Grey!! My husband is wanting this color in his bathroom, and you have just inspired me to paint it!!

  4. Well. . . I may not be an expert, but I recently fell into working (on my own house) in a color palette of chocolate, cream, pewter, silver, plum, and lavender. It's unique, but really soothing rather than jarring. I had been playing around with a more basic, monochrome sort of high-contrast espresso-and-off-white mix, but this is just so much more fun!
