My Painted Floor Cloth (and a Question About Size)

My floor cloth isn’t quite finished yet.  It’s close…but not quite.

I still need to seal it with several coats of polyurethane and then add an edge “binding” (which is just to give it a finished look, since there’s really nothing to “bind” with vinyl flooring).

But I can’t move on to those finishing steps until I’ve made a decision on the size of the floor cloth, and I just find myself being quite stumped over this.  A couple of weeks ago, I posed the question about size on the A2D Facebook page, and I got several differing opinions.  So, I’m giving it another shot here to see if y’all can help me make a final decision on the size.  Because once that edge binding is on, it’s on!  There won’t be any do-overs.

Alrighty…so here’s what I have right now.

Right now, it is 6’ X 3’, and it’s centered with the sink.

(Just ignore my half-grouted floor.  Embarrassed smile)

So, what do you think about the size?  I kind of think it’s too big, but then I think maybe I like a bold statement in such a tiny room.  Help me make a decision!!  I’m ready to get this project wrapped up.

  1. I love it..usually in kitchens you will see those smaller mats. This makes me want to gouot and get a large mat for my kitchen as well.

  2. I think it is a little big and bright for the space. You did the wall so beautifully and I am afraid the rug may take away from it. Sorry, I hate to be a naysayer but, if you like it you should keep it because it is your space.

  3. It is perfect! I would like to see it centered in the space more rather than under the cabinets. I love it, it really adds some pizazz to the room. Breaks up the brown on the floor and counter tops.

  4. I love it. If the finished product will look just like the photo, then I like the size as it is. However, if your 'binding' going to be a visible band around the perimeter, it might change the appearance.

  5. The size is just right. Smaller would look skimpy and no one wants that!! Bold and beautiful. Looks great.

  6. Oh my gosh — the size is PERFECT — and let me say I am SO thrilled to see someone decorating a TINY space as my whole house is small and I get discouraged seeing 'gigantic' make overs that I could never use. And I absolutely adore the 'things to do' at the end. I'm a 'frame' junkie so this is yet one more great thing to do with them!

  7. I think it should be about 42"x 30".. just a bit better proportioned for the space. And how would you 'bind' it?

  8. Hmmm. I think that it is a bit too big. I am not sure if you want it pushed up against the cabinets, but I think it would look better with a bit of breathing room around it. I do love the colors and the stripes. You did a fantastic job!

  9. Pull it out a bit from the cabinets so you can see a strip of tile (maybe 3 or 4 inches is all) and it will be perfect!

  10. I LOVE IT!!! Love the colors and the size. I do think it should be pulled out from the cabinet some so that you can see some of the floor there. Does it really have to have a binding? I like it just the way it is.

  11. I really love the cloth, but if it were me, I would make it just a little shorter and center it more on the floor and not right under the cabinets.

  12. Utility counts. And useful is beautiful.

Leave it where it is and leave it large. One of the purposes of having a floor cloth is to catch the damp and the crud that falls off the counter top and sink. And the size and position make the floor cloth function well.

  13. The floor cloth looks beautiful. I was excited that you were going to be able to check something else off your list of to-dos for your kitchen, but found that it wasn't on the list. 🙂 You remind me of myself. The creative juices just keep flowing and the finishing touches are boring. I can relate.

  14. I can't believe this wasn't on my list!!! Well, it's on there now. 🙂 No way am I going to do all of this work, and then NOT be able to cross something off of that darn list!!

  15. The size is perfect. Any smaller then the dark floor competes with the rug – and likely wins. Now the rug is the star.

    Great job.. love it.

  16. Oh I'm so happy that everyone else appears to agree with me! Leave it large and the colours are amazing!

  17. I really enjoy the rug I think it is a great size, don't change it! I love the choice of color for your cabinets too, good job.

  18. I think if it's going to be up against the sink cabinets maybe it needs to be just a tad smaller. It looks perfect in all but the second picture where it shows the other cabinets and fridge. It's hard to tell without seeing the whole picture–all of the kitchen. You're the expert, you'll know what is best, and if that fails then ask your mom. 🙂
