Pantry Cabinet Progress — Drawers, Pull-Out Shelves, and Really Vibrant Tiles

Y’all, I’ve been working overtime on the pantry, and I’m very pleased with the progress I’ve made. My goal today is to get the cabinet built finished, so I’m going to make this update short and sweet.

Here’s what I’ve done since the last update:

I re-resined the tiles, and now they’re super colorful and vibrant. I realized that my issue with the first attempt wasn’t that they were too colorful and bold. It was that they were too marbled and blended for my taste. So this time, I did less blending and just let the alcohol inks mix and mingle with less help from me and my heat gun. Here are the tiles with the two coats (i.e., the more subdued and way more marbled look)…

And here’s how those more subdued tiles looked with the newly finished countertop…

And here are my new vibrantly-colored tiles along with four of the more subdued ones…

Yep, now those are definitely more me. I wish you could see them in person, because my photos just don’t do them justice. In person, they’re stunning. Mesmerizing, even.

In other pantry progress news, I got the three middle drawers built. (If my mid-project messes stress you out, you might want to click away now. 😀 )

And yes, the drawers actually work…

I still need to make the decorative drawer fronts for them, but the hard part is done.

And just last night, I finished up the pull-out pantry shelves in the tall cabinet on the right…

And as you can see above, I also got two of the doors made and installed, although I still need to add some trim to the fronts of the doors to really finish them. I’ll be doing all of the cabinet doors in the pantry the same way I did the drawers on the hallway cabinet…

In other words, they’ll be like the doors without that second piece of smaller trim forming that inner rectangle.

I still feel like I can finish on time, barring any unforeseen circumstances. And I promise that I still have that cabinet-building tutorial coming soon! But for now, I need to get busy building some cabinet doors.

  1. I thought the tiles looked brighter in your last Instagram post! I like the vibrant version so much better! “Subdued” just doesn’t seem to be a word that lasts long in your vocabulary 🙂

So, the latest list of Kristi rules is as follows:

    1. When in doubt, paint it teal.
    2. When the vibrant version doesn’t work, don’t subdue. Try a different vibrant version. 🙂

You can do it!! I can see the finish line!!

  2. Those updated tiles are beautiful!! Your pantry will be absolutely amazing!! Wish I even had the space for a pantry!

  3. What did you use for the drawer slides? I bought a jig to help get it aligned correctly but haven’t used it yet because I am scared I am going to ruin the drawers.

  4. I can’t wait for you to finish the cabinets and post your build process. I need step by step directions! 🙂 I would love to know how you decide where to put the drawer pulls so everything is flush. When you post, if you would include the cost, that would be helpful too. I am so anxious to build my own entertainment wall and kitchen. Watching you do all these projects has given me the confidence I need to try it too. Thanks so much Kristi! You are quite the inspiration!

  5. WOW! Looks fantastic. Am I right to assume that the drawers and the pull-out pantry shelves are basically the same thing? I understand that the drawers will have fronts on them and the shelves will not, but otherwise, they look to be pretty much the same thing. Where did buy the “slider” thingys – (sorry I can’t remember what they’re called) and how expensive are they?

  6. You are a machine! I can hardly believe how much you can do and how much you get done. The new tiles are even prettier…if that’s possible.

  7. I am worn out just watching all the work you are doing. But you rock for sure. Love everything you are doing in this pantry.

  8. The bright colors are definitely more you. I didn’t care for the subdued version at all but since you said you loved them, I didn’t want to say anything. But all that beautiful color just pops and is very lovely!

    1. I couldn’t agree more!!! I love the vibrant tiles so much. I didn’t like the subdued tiles as much but felt the same way – if Kristi loves them that’s good enough for me! Having said that… These are really stunning and the progress is amazing!

    1. Yes, I’d be interested in a tutorial for the pull-out shelves as well. Your pantry is coming along great! Looks fabulous so far.

  9. Simply amazing!!!!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻You are a powerhouse!!!! Now, GO, Christy, GO!!!!!!!!! ⏱😬

  10. While I liked the first set of tiles, I really like these better! I’m amazed at the difference in the shapes and movement in the two styles as well. The new ones look more like geodes, which I know you like!

  11. I am a faithful follower, though I seldom comment on your projects…only because there are no words that adequately cover the awe I feel as you turn out project after wonderful project in seemingly no time. All that, plus your home and family duties, plus all that goes into the blog…narrative and photos. It is waaaaay beyond me how you find time for it all…even if you didn’t ever sleep (as someone recently asked). And when do you find the time to come up with all your ideas and the How-To of them? It is like you say today, “I am going to do this”…and by tomorrow (next day at the latest), you have done it, when I would still LONG be thinking about HOW I am going to do this. I see the design programs where the designers seemingly come up with marvelous ideas on the fly (and then have several other ‘bodies’ to make them happen). We know that is not happening in real time. But you ARE real time and you are doing it all yourself. I could go on and on expressing my wonderment about how you do it all…but I have a project I have to THINK about how to do. Actually, what it has come to is thinking that if I could only turn it over to Kristi, it would be done by now; but with you as AWESOME INSPIRATION, I trudge on…so grateful for the day I found your blog. You add so much to my life. Thank you for being there for all of us.

  12. You are creating my dream pantry …I am so envious of you having this kind of space to create such a super pantry! The only things I’d add in mine would be a small sink and a built-in ice machine and beverage cooler. And I love the new tiles and the countertops. You are truly a DIY dynamo! Can’t wait to see this space finished and stocked. Awesome work, Kristi!

  13. Fabulous, Kristi. Imagine what fun you will have to stock that beautiful space! The tile colors just sing with their beauty. Love their vibrancy.

You are on the home stretch.

  14. You have gotten an incredible amount of work done in the last 24 hours. Wow!! The tiles are beautiful and I can’t wait to see them as a backsplash. Your pull out drawers are amazing and will serve you well in your pantry. Easy to get to everything you need.

    Go Go Go Kristi!!

  15. The caption should read “Caution, this is what a REAL work zone looks like”. Matt must be SO supportive, my Hub used to ask, “Are you every gonna clean up this mess”? (Why clean it up when you’re just going to make another mess tomorrow?)
It’s already awesome, can’t wait for the finished product.

  16. I have pull-out drawers like these in my pantry. Id like to meet the person who invented them & hug their neck!
    The updated tiles look amazing.
    Now, about that pantry floor…😉😉😉😉😉

  17. I lov the new tiles! Am i rhgith that you omttied several colours in them or did you just use smaller amounts of white and gold? To me, these look perfect and I can picture them as the backsplash thanks to your arrangement on the counter 🙂 I’m in awe of the progress, too, you’re a inspiration!

  18. I sure wish I lived close to you, I would gladly come and help you just to learn from you! I know it takes a lot of planning a prep yo build something from nothing and I bet you know all the tricks of the trade! I would love to be there soaking up the knowledge!

  19. Wow, those tiles look great! I love that you are making the effort and investing a lot of work on a purely utilitarian space. I think our homes should be an expression of ourselves and make us smile. Those tiles I am sure will make you smile for many years.

  20. I’ve never attempted making drawers and attaching the sliders seems quite a difficult task. Looking forward to your cabinet making tutorial!

  21. Kristi,
when you installed the pull-out drawers, did you install the rails to the drawer first then to the cabinet or vice versa? I’ve completed some cabinet drawer inserts (thanks to you) that fits tight. It works but I will be pulling the drawers out and sanding the sides down so they’ll glide more smooth.

I’m curious if you had a secret to quick installation? Thanks again for your blog. I have found my courage to pick up the tools and try….

    Hope
