How To Tastefully Decorate With Polka Dots

by Jen Webber

Let’s face it.  Polka dots are adorable, but most of us don’t think of them as something we would use in decorating around the house.  So I’ve pulled together several different ideas for tastefully decorating with polka dots.

Polka dot curtains are a great way to add a jolt of color and pattern to any room.  These curtains in pink would naturally be a great addition to a girl’s bedroom, but they can be used anywhere you’d like to add color and pattern.

Polka dots can be used as way to add interest to a large blank wall.  These bright and colorful dots would naturally be fitting for a toddler’s room, but they would also look great in a playroom or even a boring hallway.

Polka dots can easily be incorporated into artwork for just about any room in your home.  The artwork shown below is a DIY project that even a child can do. Click on the source below the photo to see the tutorial.

Small accessories like throw pillows are a great way to incorporate polka dots in small amounts into your home.  You can make your own pillow and add polka dots with paint, or you can purchase ready-made pillows like the one shown below in any color you like.  This pillow is very natural looking and adds a nice little pop of color.

Polka dots on a wall, especially in a smaller room, might sound too busy.  But as you can see in the bathroom below, polka dots can actually be quite subtle and pretty.  Sometimes it’s hard to find something interesting and cost effective to do on bathroom walls that doesn’t require putting in new tile. This is a great solution!

If you like bold, bright, graphic statement in a room, polka dots might be just what you need.  And even used in a bright and bold way, they can still be very tasteful.  Don’t like hot pink?  You can use any bright color. Any teenage girl would love you forever with this wall.

Sometimes windows and sliding glass doors can be a tad boring.  Consider adding some interest with repositionable frosted dots.

If an entire wall of polka dots overwhelms you, consider adding a small portion of dots to your walls, such as a large border around the top of the walls.  The brown and blue shown below would look great in just about any room, from an office to a boy’s bedroom.  Notice how the pattern starts just above the door frame, and the polka dots are carried onto the chair, which is a great accent.

If your bedroom is a bit on the boring side, try adding one item upholstered in polka dots.  Upholstering a cushioned bench for the end of the bed in polka dots, like the one shown below, is a great way to add something interesting for the eye.
