Bedroom Suite Progress — It’s Almost Finished!!

I had a goal to completely finish our bedroom suite (not including the storage room, obviously) by the end of this month. And I actually think that’s going to happen! I’m down to the last few small projects, so over the last few days, I decided to put my nose to the grindstone and see just how many I could get checked off of my list.

I started with the ones I dreaded the most just to get those over and done with. First up, the bedroom doors. Ever since I installed these doors, the doors have been almost impossible to close because they were just a tiny bit too wide to fit into the opening. When I first installed them, they closed well. But our house, built on a pier and beam foundation and shifty soil, is always moving and shifting ever so slightly throughout the year, so soon after I installed them, they started getting stuck and wouldn’t close all the way.

So I had to remove one of the doors, cut it down on my table saw, reinstall it, and add a new piece of vertical trim where the doors meet. Thank goodness my mom was here to help me with that! There’s no way I could have cut down that door on my table saw by myself since all I have is a small jobsite table saw.

But we got it cut down, and the I got it reinstalled, and now the doors close very easily. I can finally get the paint touched up (and the new trim painted), install the door pulls and door lock, and “frost” the glass for privacy.

Next up, see if you can pinpoint what’s now gone from this photo…

Yes, I finally moved our router! This thing has been sitting on the floor right here in the foyer ever since I removed the hallway cabinets. That was over a year ago. So the router had become a fixture in the hallway ever since, with its unsightly cable hanging down to the floor.

I dreaded this because I had to get up in the attic to move it, and I hate getting into the attic. But I was determined to get all of these dreaded projects done that I had been procrastinating on because I dreaded them. It only took about 30 minutes, and now the router is located in the hallway bathroom (soon-to-be storage room). That will be the perfect location for it once that room is done.

The biggest project that I had been dreading was replacing the water damaged grasscloth wallpaper in the foyer.

Unlike moving the router, which I dreaded and then it only took 30 minutes, this one wasn’t so fast. It wasn’t difficult at all (nothing like removing wallpaper from the 80s and 90s), but it still took about four hours over two days to get it finished. But it was worth the time and effort because now it looks good as new.

I also got my second lamp finished. I bought two of these lamps on Marketplace and completely redid them using an expensive lamp that I fell in love with as my inspiration (you can click here to see the before and after, as well as the inspiration). I’m very pleased to finally have light on my side of the bed now.

Here it is with a little peek of the bird pillow. I love that fabric so much, and I’ll be using it on one more piece of the bedding that will be pretty prominent. So stay tuned for that.

And finally, I got our new monstrous 65-inch TV hung on the wall. This new TV was the only requested change that Matt asked for, so I was happy to oblige. It actually doesn’t look as big and imposing now that it’s hung on the wall.

I still need to paint the cord cover and then stick it to the wall. I hung the TV high enough so that I could put things on the dresser without it covering the screen. I have to admit that I absolutely love this TV. And I’ve changed my mind about making a frame for it. This TV is much thinner than our previous TVs, so it actually sits close enough to the wall that there’s no ugly side view. So that’s another project marked off (or removed, actually) from my “to do” list.

In addition to those projects, I also worked on the draperies more. Those are feeling like the never-ending project, but I’m so close to being done. I just have to put the pleats in the last panel (which happens to be one of the double-width panels for the door), and then I have to hem all four panels, and they’ll be done. So, y’all, I’m actually on track to meet my goal of finishing our bedroom suite by the end of this month! It will feel so great to have this massive project DONE!

In other news, Tiger is adapting to spending more and more time indoors. He still wants to go outside during the day, but he’s gradually spending less and less time outside. I used to let him out in the morning and then I wouldn’t see him until about 9:00pm. But lately, he’s been showing up at the back studio doors at random times of the day wanting me to let him inside. He still doesn’t get along with Felicity or Cooper, although Cooper has calmed down quite a bit around tiger. But any time he gets too close, Tiger swats and hisses at Cooper. He does the same with Felicity. But I think in time, they’ll all get used to each other.

  1. Just curious.
Why have you chosen to use shades instead of blinds.
    Most homes have them.
Your shades are different and look great
I always thought that using blinds one has more control of the light entering the room

  2. Everything looks amazing. It’s so funny we all put off those ‘dreaded’ tasks and they (almost) always turnout to be less of a hassle than we had built up in our minds. That is two huge projects you have finished and they both have turnout so beautiful. Can’t wait to see the final pictures at the end of the month!

    1. Just referring to projects in the last 12 mths – no shade to the other amazing projects you have done prior to that!

    2. I have a bad habit of doing that. I build these projects up in my mind, thinking they’re going to be really difficult or horrible in some way. And then I do it, and the actual projects takes a fraction of the time and effort I’ve spent dreading it. 😀

  3. Great work. Sometimes the small projects to finish up are the worst mentally. Even though they don’t take as much time as the main project.

Have you thought about hiding the electrical wires for the TV in the wall? I read about how to do that on John and Sheri’s Young House Love blog. https://www.younghouselove.com/how-to-hide-tv-wires/
Worked beautifully. My husband and I got it done in no time and it wasn’t that hard.

They no longer post as regularly as you do, but their and your blog are the only two ones I read anymore. Because I always get great ideas on how to improve our house. And I know that recommendations on products are not purchased, but based on actual real life experience. Keep up the good work. I look forward to checking in on your blog daily with my morning cup of coffee.

    1. Yep, I saw that back when they did it! 🙂 I was a regular reader when they posted every day. I may consider doing that if the cord cover shows too much. But I’d rather not deal with it since it’s only about six inches showing. I think once the cord cover is painted, and I have things on the dresser, it won’t show at all.

  4. It’s all coming along very nicely and it’s a beautiful room. The lamps look really expensive though with all the sanding, I’m sure it was a good bit of work. Regarding the cord cover, wouldn’t it be better to use scraps of grasscloth rather than paint on the part you see so it really blends in?

    1. I actually did consider that, and I might still try it. I don’t know that it would be easier (grasscloth isn’t very easy to work with), but it might look better. I don’t expect it to show at all once the room is done, though.

      1. The cord is such a short length that it will hardly show at all. Painting it should do nicely, especially since you will have some other decor on the chest.
Also, so glad your kitty is coming inside, especially since the forecast for this weekend is really cold.

  5. I made floral arrangements using faux hydrangeas to hide the tv cord in my living room and bedroom. Hydrangeas are full and round so they look great in long and low containers. Let me know if you want pictures. Your bedroom is absolutely beautiful.

  6. Love the TV on the wall. All your “to dos” are getting done. The room looks beautiful.
I enjoy the reports on Matt plus the reports on the kitties and dog. How is Cooper doing with his eating/drinking/throwing up issues? It seems our dog is having maybe the same issues.
So, floors are before workshop? That is probably a good idea.

  7. Love a good stray adoption story, I think the ones who find/choose us are just a little more special! And love how everything is coming together, so excited for you to get this one done!

  8. Exciting being so close to done! It looks terrific. Did you work on the attic access door when you went up to move the router or is it still on the to-do list?

  9. Love your work!
Give Feliway a try with the cats. May help with Tiger’s response to Cooper, too. They are ugly little plug ins with cat pheromones. I use extension cords or power strips to hide them under furniture with legs or a slightly raised base. I have had as many as 5 indoor cats and 5, sometimes 6 dogs (dog-sit for relative). Different ages, sizes and acquisition dates. Down to 3 cats and 1 full-time dog now. I have lots of photos of cats and dogs sleeping together and sitting together. There are other brands than Feliway but the diffusers aren’t interchangeable so I haven’t tried any other brand. It might be worth a try!

  10. Wow, Kristi, the bedroom is looking so beautiful! I just have to shake my head when I look at the photos and note all the projects that you have accomplished with your own hands. From refinishing the floor, adding the trim to make panels on the wainscoting, hanging the wallpaper, sewing the draperies, building the headboard and base for the bed, sewing pillows, painting the dresser and the bench, remodeling the bedside lamps, not to mention completing all the projects in the closet, I just shake my head in amazement. You are one talented and hardworking lady! And soft-hearted, too, to allow a stray cat to become part of your family. Congratulations on work well done!
