Home Office Inspiration

Since Wednesday, when I found some gorgeous fabric that I’d love to use in my office, I’ve had home offices on my mind.  Yesterday, about once every two hours, I would just go stand in the doorway to my office and imagine what it would look like all decorated, completely organized, and beautiful.  Oh, I can’t wait for that day!!

So last night, I tried to find some home office inspiration online.  I had imagined my office light, bright, and full of many happy colors.  But then I found this…

Still colorful, yet toned down considerably from what I had imagined.  I absolutely LOVE this office.  Oh dear.  Now I’m conflicted.

See why it takes me so long to decorate my own home?!  I have no idea what I like!!!  Or more accurately, the problem is that I like too many styles!  Do you have this problem as well?  Or do you know exactly what you like, and have a clear plan from the start?

  1. I know what I like, but my husband (thankfully) likes to have a lot of input into our decorating/home organization. I'm learning to not just follow my visualized plan, but to actually SHOW him by trying something out and see if he likes it. This has taught me to be a little more flexible in how I want a room decorated, because sometimes I end up not liking that item/color/etc there either!

  2. I too like many styles, and change my mind frequently. Or, know what I want but never get around to completion, so I end up with outdated plans. Sometimes with part of the "plan" already purchased (anyone know how to make wallpaper border not be dated???). But, since it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind, I'm good! 🙂

  3. I know what I like. When it comes to my office, I like white, gray and black — the reason is that when I'm working (I'm a graphic designer) I like my headspace clear. I don't want to be influenced by bright colors or graphics. That way, what I'm working on becomes the bright colors, the "focal point" for the day. And when I'm done with it, it goes away and doesn't compete with the next project. My office is the one room in the house that is deliberately a blank slate.

  4. My home office is not so much a home office as a crafting studio/retreat. It's in the 3rd bedroom in my home, so the space is very small (about 10' x 11'). I need room for my two sewing machines and my serger, plus a cutting table, and a desk for my laptop.

Just this week, my husband installed a 10' long kitchen counter top as my sewing station – it definitely helps with space. My stitching studio will never be as fancy as the home offices I see in magazines, but it's functional for me.

If I had a larger budget and a larger room, I'm sure I could do much more with it, but this works for me right now.

  5. Oooh! That is so pretty! Beautiful. I see what you mean about being torn. Right now I have the turquoise, hot pink and green accents. I found some art that I put on my walls and now it seems like my attention is drawn everywhere and suddenly my office space seems a lot more chaotic. I took the wall art down and definitely felt like I needed to change the direction I was heading. Hubby is gonna kill me considering all my storage is in the bright colors. I completely agree that too much visually will affect your ability to concentrate so that is definitely something to consider.

  6. I love the shelves with the wicker baskets. This keeps the room looking so neat and tidy. My office shelves/craft shelves always look so cluttered. I have been moving towards using baskets on shelves in various areas. This one looks wonderful.

  7. Love this office and love the Expedit. Looks so classy! 😉 I am bookmarking these photos since I currently have an Expedit in my dining room turned playroom that I will have to incorporate somewhere in my home once the playroom goes. I too am torn when decorating my own home and I am not even a designer. Hmm Maybe I should be. lol

  8. I like WAY too many styles and I have the SAME problem decorating my home. Whew. I’ve just about hit the wall though and am about to go into turbo mode and MAKE SOME DECISIONS!

  9. I change my mind constantly. I bought paint to paint the outside of our house, and now I wish I hadn't because I'd rather it was a different color. But phew, I'm not paying to buy a different color!!

  10. I too love that room! But it does have color! That rug is not too subdued. I think you can incorporate both styles with this design. Adding color on the chair cushions would bring in more color but keep it subdued at the same time. I am loving shades of purple right now like they have in this room. They paired it with grey walls and a lime green rug, fantastic!

  11. I could go back and forth all day about how I want my home office to look. Right now it's the dining room, but I often daydream (and get no actual work done!) about revamping the area. Do I want contemporary, funky, classic, colorful, professional, subtle? Too many choices and why it is still just the dining room as when I moved in! I get great ideas here…just need to make a final decision and do it!

  12. Working from home means different
things to different people. Perfect home office depends on what we have, what
we use and if we’re pleased with it. I bought three band posters off of eBay, all the
same size, and some inexpensive silver metal frames, and they look really nice
too. I'm redecorating my home office and I need inspiration.
