Master Bathroom Progress — Toilet Room Walls Finished! (But Second-Guessing The Pink)

The walls in the toilet area of our master bathroom are finally finished! I was uncertain about my design decision for these walls for a while, but now that everything is painted, I love it! At one point, I was considering having just plain white walls in this area, but in the end, I couldn’t do it. Just plain white painted drywall? That’s just not me at all.

Plus, if I left the area with just plain white painted drywall, it would drive me crazy to have such a large plain wall with nothing on it. I’d most certainly feel the need to hang artwork on such a plain wall, and then it would distract from the mural.

So I decided that a compromise would be to add judges paneling to these walls and paint them white. That way, the walls have some interest to them, and I wouldn’t feel the constant need to add artwork to the walls (especially the right wall that’s visible from the main part of the room). But it’s subtle and won’t be distracting, allowing the mural to remain the main focal point. I really love how it turned out.

So the last time I showed y’all this area, the walls looked like this…

And now with everything primed and painted, it looks like this…

See how the paneling added just enough interest to the walls without being overpowering? And that judges paneling will be carried throughout the main part of the room, but it will be just on the bottom part of the walls below the teal Venetian plaster finish.

I did go ahead and paint the one wall pink as planned, but I’m having second thoughts about it. I love the color on its own. It’s called Lady Pink by Glidden. And you can only see a sliver of that wall when standing right in the doorway between the bathroom and the home gym. Once you step into the bathroom, that wall disappears, which is why I thought it would be fun to add another color to that wall.

But I had a couple of issues with this decision. (1) I don’t like this particular color with the blue walls. It’s too much pastel in the room. Those teal walls would look good with a really super light, barely-there pink. But this one has way too much color to look good with the walls. But also, (2) having a white toilet against a wall with color will almost turn the toilet into a feature. And that’s just weird to me. I’d rather have the white toilet disappear, and not become a feature.

So I really don’t think I’d be happy with even a super light pale pink wall at this point. It needs to be white to match the others. Oh well. I tried, and I like to try out different ideas. It was only an $11 trial (Glidden paint is cheap!), so it’s no huge loss.

I’m still going to carry on with my main original idea for this wall. I think it’ll look just as good on a white background as it would have on a pink background. And in fact, white might even be better. But y’all will have to wait for that. I hope to get started on that today. This little room is very close to being finished! I just need to (1) install the new toilet, (2) finish up the wall behind the toilet, and (3) build the cabinet that will go in here. That last item will probably take a few days, but it shouldn’t be too difficult.

  1. I agree – the pink is a bit much! You could always go with a paler pink, but you might wait until the cabinet is completed and installed as it could influence your decision. Your bathroom is beautiful. I can’t wait to see it finished!

  2. I love the paneling and can’t wait to see it in the rest of the bathroom below the teal. I also agree the pink isn’t great. I’m sure whatever you come up with will be perfect!

  3. Funny, first I couldn’t see your post, and now something looks different!? But I’m happy to see your post – that color is pretty, maybe a bit too intense, but I think you right about highlighting a toilet. 🤣 I guess it’s better to just blend in. Your wall looks SO nice, and I’m sure we are all looking forward to seeing it below that gorgeous teal color and finish. (that is my favorite!) Enjoy your time with Matt this week too.

    1. Although it looks like you’ve pretty much decided and I don’t know what you have planned for that wall, I still think a barely barely pink wall would looks nicer than white. I’m just a color person too! That’s just my opinion. I absolutely LOVE this bathroom and can’t wait to see it finished!

  4. Love the panelling but not that pink!!! Too girly-girly for a toilet room (for me anyway) and reminds me of pepto bismal. Sorry Kristi.

  5. I agree that this pink is too strong, and I see your point in not doing a whisper pink. But I bet you won’t be happy with a plain white wall, and unfortunately, I have no suggestion. (But maybe that’s not a bad thing! LOL!) Love the panels though! Your website is different, but I do see it. (OBVIOUSLY!) It’s like the comment section has been changed, print is larger.

  6. Well the post wouldn’t come up for several tries. I emailed the webmaster but tried it again and it came up this time. Yaayyy. And yes the change in the posts look really different as well.
Anyhow, I agree with you on the pink walls.

  7. Love that you’re willing to give things a try. I agree with your assessment of not making the toilet a feature. The judge’s paneling is absolutely beautiful!

  8. I love everything you do, but agree the pink is a little distracting, but I love pink a lot too. So why not do the wall in the venetian plaster…just thinking out loud. Keep up the incredible work. I love how all of this is coming together. Paneling is AWESOME!!!

  9. I love the look of the judges paneling! Just a thought, why not do the bottom half of the “pink wall” in the judges paneling like the large area of the bathroom will be under the blue plaster? That would allow the toilet to blend in with the wall and you could try a lighter pink on the top half of the wall. Don’t know if it was just my monitor but in the finished pictures of the toilet area there was a pinkish glow on the paneled wall, maybe just my computer or maybe the Glidden pink is just TOO bright. Keep up the great work!

  10. Oddly enough, the pink reflected off the wall with the judge’s paneling and turned it a soft pink in one of the photos – was not a fav! I think I prefer the white too! And yes, the fonts starting with the date the post was written, in the comment section, and also the copyright section at the bottom of the page seem to have all changed.

  11. Kristi:

I love the way the bathroom is coming together. The paneling looks great!! But I’m with you in that the back wall needs to be white so you don’t highlight the toilet. Just a thought – could you free hand some paintings of a few birds flying – very similar looking to the ones in the mural? It would carry the mural theme deeper into the bathroom and tie the two sections of the bathroom together.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Thanks for sharing your progress.

  12. I’m not a fan of accent walls. I think the pink is too much with the mural, teal walls, paneling and tiled shower. The paneling is beautiful painted white.
