A Pretty Big Closet Detail I Overlooked
Last night, I was taking inventory of the things I still needed to finish and purchase for the walk-in closet project to be finished. I thought I had already purchased everything I need for the rest of the projects I still need to finish, with one small exception, and I thought I had accounted for all of the purchases I still need to make.
The island is about at the 80% finished point. I think I’m going to change my plan for the drawer front and door design, but that will just take a little bit of different (and cheaper) trim if I do that. I ended up purchasing different 12-inch pulls for the drawers.

I still need to add shoe molding around the bottom of the cabinets, but that’s not a huge expense at all.
I’ve already accounted for the chandelier project, and have purchased almost everything I need for that, with the exception of whatever I’m going to use for making the actual flowers. I have the metal rods for the stems and the products I need to hold the stems to the chandelier.
And I’ve already spent some time thinking through how to do that project and drilling about 50 holes in the bottom cap of the chandelier to get that project underway after I’m done with the island.
So I just need to find the right thing to use to create the actual flowers, but I can’t imagine that whatever that is (obviously, spoons come to mind) will be expensive at all.
The washer and dryer cabinets still need some trim, but I have all of that, as well as the plywood and trim needed to finish the countertops on each one. It’s just a matter of finding the time to finish those out.
As far as items needed for the cabinets, those will all be filled with items I already have. These shelves will hold my handbags. They’ll just sit right on the shelves, so I don’t need any type of organization products for those shelves.
The same goes for the shoe shelves. I don’t need anything else for this section other than to bring my shoes in and place them on the shelves.
I have two sections for hanging and folding clothes, and I don’t anticipate that I’ll need any type of additional storage products for those shelves. I just need to get my clothes out of the sunroom and into this room.
This section might need something for storage on the top shelf, but I have my laundry baskets and step ladder.
I’d still like to find a small step stool to store in this section that I can pull out to reach the top shelves on the handbag and shoe sections, but that’s not a purchase I’m really stressing over right now. Any cute little step stool will work.
All of the trim on this wall and above the washer and dryer has been installed, with the exception of the shoe molding. It’s been wood filled and sanded, so I just need to caulk and paint. But I already have the caulk and paint on hand. And as far as privacy goes, I’ve decided to stick with the window shade I already have, although I might decide to lighten the color just a bit. If I do that, I’ll just use some paint and dry brush the shade with paint I already have. And I’m going to use some privacy film on the bottom, so I’ll need to purchase more of that, but that’s not a huge expense.
And then I’m going to move the sconces and artwork from the breakfast room into this room to use over the washer and dryer. The sconces need to be painted, but I already have the spray paint to get that done.
So in my mind, all of the purchases I had left to make were pretty small and insignificant. Spoons (probably) for the chandelier, a bit of shoe molding, some window film.
And then I realized I had overlooked a pretty big item. I had planned to use baskets for these shelves since I scrapped my idea of putting doors on these sections, and I had completely forgotten about them.
In my mind, baskets weren’t a big thing. They don’t register in my mind as a significant item or a significant expense.
Well, I was wrong! Y’all, since I realized my oversight, I have spent about two hours online searching and searching for baskets to use on these shelves, and I’m running into two problems. First, finding baskets big enough seems to be the biggest challenge. Those shelves are 25″ wide, 16″ deep, and 13″ high. Almost all of the rectangle baskets I’m finding that are labeled as “large” are about 16 inches wide. That simply won’t work. I want something at least 20″ wide, but 24″ wide would be preferable.
And it’s true that baskets are generally not a huge, significant expense…when you’re purchasing one basket. But I want ten baskets for these shelves. (I don’t plan on using baskets on the very top shelves.) And when you 10X the cost of anything, that can get expensive really fast.
So far, the only basket I’ve found that comes close to the dimensions I need is this one from Home Depot. It’s 21″ wide, 16″ deep, and 10″ high. Those measurements are pretty perfect for what I need. And I love the look of it.
But that basket is $63.36. If I needed one, it would be an insignificant cost. Even two would be a reasonable cost. But I need ten of them! And I just can’t wrap my head around paying over $600 for baskets. I mean, $600 is a pretty significant cost that I completely overlooked.
So I have no idea what I’m going to do. Should I just grit my teeth and buy the baskets so that I can get this project done? I’m so ready to move on to the bedroom!!! Or is there another solution that I’m overlooking? Obviously, I want the storage on that wall to be pretty. I don’t want some cheap plastic containers filling up that wall. I want something large and at least 10 inches high so that it’s actually useful. I’ve wondered if there’s something I could make for a cheaper price, but then I’m spending even more time on another project. And making 10 of anything will take quite a bit of time, regardless of how simple it is.
But the plan for that wall was to store things that I won’t want out in the open. And since I’m way past the point of no return with eliminating the door option, I need to figure this out and either make plans to make something or just grit my teeth and spend $600 on baskets. Perhaps one of you will have a creative (and cheaper) solution for me.
UPDATE: OH MY GOSH, Y’ALLLLLLL!!!!! The Chicago interior designer who came to MY very public Facebook page with over half a million followers, and decided to leave disparaging comment after disparaging comment, including calling me a “fat, ugly cow” and a “stupid wh*re” and a “c*nt” is now THREATENING LEGAL ACTION AGAINST ME for my blog post the other day!!!
Do I have any attorneys in the crowd who can consult with me over this? He even posted his legal threat in a public comment on my very public blog on that post under his full name and with his business name. You can see it at the end of this blog post: She Didn’t Hurt My Feelings. She Made Me Angry. Here’s Why…
I used to make “baskets” out of cardboard and rope. They actually looked pretty nice, and after 10–15 years, they are still in great condition. I used cardboard, foam board, or that black art board you can get at a craft store. I used hot glue and masking tape to hold the pieces together for a box, whatever size I needed, and used hot glue to attach the rope around the box. This YouTube video goes over a very similar process:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6u7tLqmtPKA
I didn’t do the papier-mâché, I left it plain if it was art board or mod-podged fabric or wallpaper to make the inside look nice. And I’ve seen people use those circular woven place mats taken apart and used as the rope. There are many possibilities, many ways to do it, and it was MUCH cheaper than the baskets. A lot of it I could do in the evening watching TV while my kids were sleeping. And I loved that the size could be completely customized for my needs.
This is fantastic! I may have to do this for some areas I need baskets in too.
Thanks for sharing!
This is a great idea and it would look great if she used the wallpaper from the rest of the room on the outsides of the boxes.
I used my kids diaper boxes and got glued rope around them. Super sturdy and held up pretty well for quite a few years
Great idea! I’ll be trying this soon for my wall of shelves in my art/sewing room. Thanks.
I wouldn’t pay that much for a basket. Most of my baskets (and I have a lot of them) are from TK Maxx (TJ Maxx in USA). Have you checked their website? They have new stuff every day, so if they don’t have what you need at the moment, I would wait for a while, checking regularly for new products. Maybe ebay and Amazon would have something suitable.
While it’s true that they will probably have baskets at a better price I fear it unlikely that you would be able to get ten of them.
Those baskets are very pretty. It may be worth the expense as they are the right size and what you envisioned for the shelves. I don’t know what you’re planning to store on the shelves but if it’s folded sweaters or t-shirts, I might just put them neatly on the shelves without baskets.
What about cane/rattan webbing framed out with 1X1’s and squared off into a box style? The webbing would be pretty easy to apply with your staple gun. I’ve seen examples on sites that sell the cane webbing.
I had a similar problem a few years ago. I can’t remember what you were planning to store in these but if they won’t get super heavy you could make your own bins using fabric. I found a pattern and instructions on the website Made Everyday with Dana that is called the “Hold it Bin” they can be made to any size using any fabric. You could use a complimentary fabric color from your wallpaper or (gasp!) a neutral which would mimic the look of a basket, Another plus of this is they have a soft bottom which will not scratch your paint on your cabinets as you slide them in and out. Once you figure out your dimensions and make the first one, the rest will go quickly!
I’m not sure these would be strong enough but…

or visit the OIAHOMY Store on Amazon
These are really pretty and functional. I actually like them better than the Home Depot basket. But I agree with you, they may not be sturdy enough with what Kristi is wanting to store. But then again, they might be perfect. I suspect they will be lighter than a basket which would be a plus.
I like those a lot, but the site indicates they are unavailable at this time.
These look very nice and affordable. Bonus – they offer a dark blue color in some of the options which would look very nice on the blue shelves. The brown ones may not be available, but the blue is better. Multiple sizes are offered which may prove useful depending on what needs to be stored.
I also think different styles of actual baskets (thrifted!) on the shelves could look very nice and interesting, like a collection, and functional at the same time. I wouldn’t get hung up on having identical baskets.
I’m sure whatever you choose will be fabulous!
It says all are currently unavailable.
You’re so close to completion. Bite the bullet and get the best baskets you like.
Home Goods!
Can you make wooden baskets and give them unique trim or paint for the look of baskets?
By the way, I don’t like baskets as they get very dusty and are hard to clean. I think you lucked out with a problem you can creatively solve a different way.
Check for baskets at Hobby Lobby and Michaels …if you find one that works they can order more for you. Also have had great luck at Marshalls, HomeGoods, TJMaxx & Ross. I literally went to all of the stores in a 100 mile radius to track down matching bowls found at TJMaxx!
Try Ikea or thrifting, however, thrifting may not work for you as you like things to be symmetrical. The Amazon baskets on Wonda Boone’s comments would look really good with your light floors. Good luck! Don’t worry about our opinions, yours’s in the end, is the only one that counts. Love watching the process and progress you are making.
The container store has BOBo 50% off. This one below looks about the right size.
https://www.containerstore.com/s/home-decor/decorative-bins-baskets/the-container-store-artisan-rush-hinged_lid-box/12d?productId=11019571
That looks great. And the price is right.
IKEA! They have every type of basket and their prices are reasonable!
I wouldn’t have a problem leaving it empty for now or getting smaller ones that leave a small bit of space around them. Patience can pay off.
I would check Hobby Lobby and then wait for them to go on sale. But yeah … Baskets are stupid pricey.
Just order the baskets. Your closet is a beautiful creation . I have had the same experience with trying to find cheaper baskets than what were the ones that fit and that I liked. Get them , be happy , and done .
Kristi, you are so talented, try making your “baskets” with boxes out of Luan wood. You can make them with finger joints if you want, but I say make them like you make your drawers, put an oval handhold in it, paint it to what you want, line with wallpaper, and viola, very custom, very organized, and very you. I am sorry that I cannot send a picture of the ones we made for my butler’s pantry. We used finger joints on them because I stained them, and they look pretty darn amazing for leftover wood. This way you can make sure that they are perfect in size. I hate to add to your list of things to do to finish the closet, but this project shouldn’t take that long and once you have them built, the finish part you can set up like an assembly line. That was my 2 pennies’ worth.
Cheers to you and Matt!
P.S. Anyone can spend a fortune on baskets, darn few people can custom make their own containers.
Baskets used to be super cheap and I may or may not be a basket fanatic, lol. My go-to places to get them were World Market and Pier-1. I went through the same thing you are now a few years ago when I organized my primary closet. Wicker and rattan are usually the most expensive, followed by water hyacinth and seagrass. Next you have canvas, coiled rope, woven paper, plastic, and a myriad of other materials.
Are you sure you want only one basket per shelf? That’s going to be pretty heavy to pull out once you have it loaded with clothes. I’d check out The Container store (sometimes $$$$) as well as other closet organizing type stores and see what they have. IKEA has “Clothes Boxes” with and without lids or zipper closures (which would be a pain to access every day). Target has coiled rope baskets in a variety of colors. I realize that you’d be doubling up the quantity by going with more than one basket per shelf but different materials are less expensive than a wicker or rattan and they are often sold in sets of two or four.
Chances are, most of the baskets you find won’t be large enough to go across the entire width of the shelf which is a positive to me due to the weight once full. I finally found some nice canvas “baskets” that fit almost perfectly on my shelves- two per shelf- and the weight is still pretty significant once filled with t-shirts, leggings, and sweaters.
As someone else mentioned, it might be beneficial to go with a “softer” type of basket or container because repeatedly pulling it down from the shelf WILL mar the finish on the shelf edge, at the very least (with or without a sealant on it). Good luck!
I was thinking two 12″ wide baskets and maybe even three 8″ baskets, or a combo, might fit better and may even look better. I hadn’t thought about the practical consideration of weight.
Why not wait until they go on sale, or you can find something you like at the right price? I could move on to the next room with this incomplete item – but that’s me. I’d rather buy exactly what I wanted, when I could afford it, and not compromise. I don’t ever consider a room done, I’m always on the hunt for something that may just be perfect. Everything in this room looks beautiful, you’ve done a lovely job.
I went snooping around online – what about using a rattan or woven ‘fabric to cover a lightweight wooden box you could build to your perfect dimensions? Also, I saw some very cute heavy felt storage containers/boxes on Etsy with leather handles. Of course they’re expensive when ordered in custom sizes, but with your mad skills you could knock those together in no time. Some even had lids which would be great for keeping seldom used items from getting dusty.
Instead of one basket per shelf, try 2. You’re more likely to find what you need and they wouldn’t be heavy. You’d be surprised how heavy some can get with just stuff in them. I had the best luck with Hobby Lobby when they have a sale. Mine are fairly large and have lids. Look like black leather with stitching.
On the other hand, would 3/8 plywood work or the craft panels? There are a ton of them on Amazon. I have made some containers out of fabric that used headliner for cars as the stiffener or the product from Bonsal, In-R-Form Plus. Easy to work with and did it’s job. If you really wanted the container stiff, use Heavy Duty Heat & Bond on the fabric and then the Bonsal product.
I suspect the prices have gone up on baskets like you showed because of the tariffs on stuff from China and other countries in the far East.
I have found it helpful to “sleep on it” and give my subconscious time to figure it out. Sometimes it takes quite a few “sleeps”!
The last idea would be to make fabric “envelopes” that are sewn together and then slide thin wooden panels into for the stiffness you need. Should be fairly easy for a plain box shape.
I know another build of anything is not what you want, but what if you made drawers for the 2 bottom shelves, then smaller baskets above that? You could do 2 – 12″ wide baskets side by side and it would fill up the width of the shelf. You’ll eliminate the need for baskets on the lower shelves, and the smaller baskets won’t cost as much.
I haven’t seen anyone suggest this yet…but what about buying some banker’s boxes in bulk (since they are cheap and sturdy, hopefully you can find some in the right size), and then wrapping them in grasscloth or burlap, or some sort of rattan webbing if you want the basket look? It wouldn’t be too hard to hot glue some sort of fabric to some cardboard boxes, and it’d be a big savings!
I have seen wire frame fabric “baskets”. Is this something you might be able to use and incorporate your own fabric?
Hold off on the baskets for now. Once you get everything else completed you may come up with a new idea for those ten shelves. Thats what happen to me after purchasing all my baskets😆
One more thing. The ponds farmhouse website has a diy of making leaf or floral lighting using a polymer.
Can you build a frame and use rattan cane webbing? I’ve bought it on Amazon and I think you could make some amazing custom baskets for a fraction of that cost. This is just an example of one they have https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJSKNZ38/ref=pd_ci_mcx_mh_pe_im_d1_hxwPPE_sspa_dk_det_ps_0_2?sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9taXNzaW9uX2JsZW5kZWQ&pd_rd_i=B0DJSKNZ38&pd_rd_w=tVJTb&content-id=amzn1.sym.8afba47e-a3b2-44a9-b5af-eec8fb222e2a&pf_rd_p=8afba47e-a3b2-44a9-b5af-eec8fb222e2a&pf_rd_r=TD8VNESW7E017EGF01P2&pd_rd_wg=OhRHu&pd_rd_r=d094ad26-5443-4586-9c02-1b1e1195aae5&th=1
Try Cost Plus World Market or TJ Max/Homegoods both online stores.
Hi Kristie! In lieu of baskets, could you use (or make) boxes of 1/4″ plywood or even cardboard and cover them in a “basket-looking” wallpaper or contact paper? Time consuming, but very cost effective. You could put some good-looking hardware on the fronts by which to pull them out. line the inside with felt ( a lot of yardage for cheap and lots of color to choose from) or velvety contact paper. This could be an assembly line type project since they’re all alike.
Covering the boxes with twine could give a basket look.
Not quite as nice as the Home Depot basket but almost 50% less.
https://www.target.com/p/xl-woven-water-hyacinth-basket-brightroom-8482/-/A-88482417?
Hobby Lobby and Home Goods both have good basket sections and are probably the lowest priced ones you can find. Or Amazon. If you can do tri-tone, these are a deal: https://www.amazon.com/OIAHOMY-Rectangle-Organizing-Handle-22-Gradient/dp/B0BPSGQHLY/ref=sr_1_50_sspa?crid=3QCH0Q6BA27W2&keywords=22%22%2Bbaskets&qid=1749140243&rnid=1243644011&sprefix=22%2Bbaskets%2Ctools%2C117&sr=8-50-spons&xpid=uGvXtx47ZJuAB&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9idGY&th=1
I saw the ones on Amazon, but from the customer review pictures, they don’t seem to hold their shape very well when they’re filled.
Have you done a Google image search yet? It will show you similar items and their cost often times.
What about taking an inexpensive box and turning it into something cute by covering with grass cloth wallpaper or fabric?
Couldn’t you make your own – make crates then use raffia or twine?
I once saw someone make ‘baskets’ by taking a custom-cut cardboard box, and then hot-gluing rows of hemp/jute rope around it. You can either wrap the plain rope, or braid pieces, so it would look a bit more like this home depot one. If you could find a folding canvas ‘bin’ you like, you could apply this technique to the front of it only?
Are you going to have a chair in the room? It may be convenient to be able to sit when you are putting on shoes.
You must be new here. 😁😁 She’s only addressed this thousands of times. 😂🤣
So you just built drawer boxes. Maybe build boxes/crates? I found baskets that are over a certain size are difficult to handle. Ikea has some affordable options because they flat pack or nest well. Ikea started making wire baskets and more to be less plastic. Container stores have some things but it adds up. That or wait till back to college starts and nab something then. Matching bulk packs of plastic Bins can be more available and on sale, maybe that applies to baskets some. The last Bins I got were these but not quite the right shape. https://www.amazon.com/Storage-Ingredients-Foldable-Organizing-Organizers/dp/B0CZ36T96K/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=2QWQV9DHBCSOB&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.z0M6bkQjFyfVYh2OITRUpw.9zMolVADz3v9k2rUouHZodpsuCGJd01Au6EWUWuko-E&dib_tag=se&keywords=storage+baskets+for+shelves&qid=1749142104&sprefix=storage+baskets%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-1&srs=120935387011
Home Goods and Ikea are my go-tos for reasonably priced baskets!
As other comments suggested—I saw cute scalloped boxes here, which may spur a creative alternative to baskets https://www.thestonybrookhouse.com/2025/06/diy-building-custom-bathroom-cabinet.html
Have you looked for baskets on Amazon. I’m sure you have but I have been searching for baskets too.
He is probably just full of hot air and wanting you to respond. Getting legal advise is a good idea, but I would not give him the satisfaction of a reply.
You still have a lot to do so don’t waste time on this nut.
What a jerk. I am so sorry you have to even respond to this man. I don’t see that he has a leg to stand on though. I know you will get good advice from your community.
I thought you already bought a step stool for the closet, the brownish one by your laundry baskets? If you can find some plastic baskets the size you need, you could always paint them to match whatever color you want. Also maybe leave those shelves empty and after you put all of your stuff in there, maybe you won’t have stuff to put in the baskets right away and the closet will be done except the baskets which you can get at another time. Unless you already have a whole bunch of stuff to put in the baskets now, then I guess you’ll have to find plan B.
My other thought about him suing you is that you could sue him for what he wrote in your blog, including the names and derogatory remarks, etc.
He has no “reasons” to sue her. He’s the one who made all the comments and Im sure she has screen shot them all. She’s the one with standing. He is “harrassing” “bullying” her online. I hope she reported him. Every place she can.
So sorry about the abusive person who obviously has pretty thin skin themselves. Regarding the baskets, would it be better to use cloth baskets? You need to be careful that the bottom of a basket isn’t rough, or it will ruin the pretty paint job you just did. I had a basket in my kitchen cupboard that created long scratches on shelf.
Get a Home Depot card and you get a $25 – $50 discount on the $600, plus you can finance it for 6 months with no interest!
Here’s the part that I don’t get about those terrible messages from the so-called designer from Chicago: in what way would those posts enhance their own home or business? Cursing about and name-calling of another person doesn’t build the “speaker” up or give them authority. Instead, it denigrates the speaker to the same degree (or more) to the level to which they seek to bring the object of their vitriol down,This is especially true when it is done through the mechanism of unbridled curses. In other words, the worse this person behaves, the more it shows their own lack of generosity and class. Who would hire this “professional” when their personality seems so awful? Your home isn’t theirs, it is a labor of your own taste and skills. If they don’t like it, don’t look! My personal taste doesn’t always reflect yours, but I admire your drive, skill, and resourcefulness, and I always learn something. If you can block this idiot, please do so.
Make something! Only because I want to see what you come up with….
I like the idea of putting 2 side by side, and ones that fit your dimensions are in most discount & warehouse stores.
Right now, prices are high due to tariffs, the % has gone up & down so often that stores just increased their prices at what they think the tariff will cost them.
Remember, constantly changing the price of goods is expensive for these companies. They WILL go on sale, maybe by Fall when things stabilize.
Stores that sell wine and alcohol usually have heavy duty boxes to give you & often have reenforced cut outs for lifting. Covered with wallpaper, material etc would look great while you wait
I wonder about Plexi boxes, there are custom made ones, but not sure of the cost. Or maybe make your own. They can either paint them for you, or you could paint them or cover them in something else so you can’t see the contents. I also thought of making some out of wood, like underlayment so they could not be too heavy. Attach felt to the bottoms so they don’t damage the paint. That decorator is a loon, and I would be sure to get screen shots, maybe turn him in to the harassment Facebook police! They might take his page down. If you have proof of his nastiness, I would check with an attorney to see what your defense looks like. There are sites that you can check with to see what your options are, and they are free.
I think you could find similar baskets at Homes Goods/TJ Maxx/Marshall’s. Finding 10 of the same might be an issue but not impossible. I like these plastic bins better than basket for some reason. They just seem cleaner and as if they might collect less dust. The price is certainly right. 🙂

I did lots of work and DIY’s for my daughter’s major kitchen remodel. The last thing I needed to complete it were 4 large baskets. I spent a ton of time looking for the right size. The only place I found them was Pottery Barn and they were $125 each on sale! After looking at other options and not having a lot of time I bit the bullet. But they do look nice!
You could use Shrinky Dinks to sculpt flowers for the chandelier in your closet.

If you have a Homegoods store near you, check for baskets there. I purchased several large ones to use for a client (I do organization) and they were only $15.
IKEA has a lot of different baskets and storage containers and the prices are reasonable. Their larger containers and not baskets but for storage and are in many different sizes.
I am so sorry that designer is being a butt-head. No one deserves those comments, ever.
Yup, baskets, and everything are super expensive now with the tarrifs and stores readjusting their pricing. I am buying a new home and just in 1 month everything I have saved in my folders for projects is now about 50% more. I can’t wait to see your finished project!
Understand not wanting plastic however target has these really nice plastic ones that the design is woven like a basket would look they come in white and have a really clean look.
I used various sizes of these baskets on my bathroom shelves. They are sturdy and lightweight and move around easily plus hold a bunch of stuff. I do not think they look cheap at all. Some I have sideways and some long ways so I can take advantage of the whole shelf space and store the items in a basket size that works well for that item. Like toilet paper is in a big one but shampoo is in a smaller one so it’s not too heavy.

Kristi, I saw these baskets online from Kohl’s. I Love the blue trimmed scalloped edges on the lids. I think they would match your wallpaper and compliment your scalloped framed mirror very well. They come in medium and large and are currently on sale for $23.99 – 27.99. I wish I could post a picture but the comments won’t let me!
OH MY GOSH!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! They’re PERFECT! I just ordered 10 of them. I got ten BIG and very cute baskets for $303!!!! 🎉🍾💃
