Bedroom Progress — The Walls And Ceiling Are Painted!

I’m not quite as far along as I had intended to be at this point because I ended up taking it easy over the weekend. I did do some work, but I was feeling pretty tired and just needed some rest. So Sunday afternoon, I got back to work on painting the ceiling in the foyer and the bedroom, and then painting the walls in the bedroom and getting them ready for trim.

When I went to bed last night, I thought that I was completely finished with the painting, but I had overlooked all of the brushwork. I generally do all of the cutting in with a brush first, and then do the roller last. I’m not sure why I forgot to do the cutting in on the lower walls with the white paint, but somehow, I overlooked it. So before I start adding trim today, I’ll need to spend a little bit of time finishing that up. But anyway, here’s the progress…

I can’t even express to you how much I’m loving how this is turning out. And I still have a long way to go! And the upper wall color is only a stand in until I get the grasscloth wallpaper up. But even at that, I’m loving everything about this.

The idea of being surrounded by my favorite color in the world (teal, obviously) and in my favorite wall finish (grasscloth wallpaper) is going to make this truly feel like a dream bedroom to me. And having that combined with another favorite of mine (white wainscoting and lots of pretty trim) is the recipe for a perfect, relaxing, comfy bedroom for us. Or, I should say, for me. Matt doesn’t care. 😀

And I just love, love, LOVE the whole layout of our bedroom suite. It’s just amazing to me how this wasn’t at all what we originally planned. And when the flooring in our home gym got ruined and had to be replaced, and then we decided to change our plans, I initially felt disappointed and discouraged. I felt like I was settling for less than what I truly wanted.

But I am not the least bit disappointed now. The bedroom suite that we’re going to end up with is far beyond what we were originally planning, and I’m so glad things worked out the way they did.

Anyway, things look like a real mess right now, so you have to use your imagination to see the “pretty” at this stage. It’ll really start shaping up when I start getting the trim on the walls in here today. But it is already so different from where I started. What once looked like this…

Now looks like this…

It’s amazing to me how much bigger this room looks and feels with those remaining walls from the original closets removed.

And I used to really dislike this little hallway between the foyer and the home gym, but I made the most of it.

But now I love it! It went from feeling like a small, cramped, awkward area, to feeling like something that makes our bedroom feel a bit more special.

Just getting the ceiling all painted the same color also made a huge difference. It feels so much brighter in here now.

And I also got a fresh coat (or two) of paint on the foyer ceiling, so that one unpainted corner is now finished.

So today, I’ll get started on all of the trim. I have no idea how far I’ll get in one day. I guess I’ll let y’all know tomorrow. 😀 But my first goal will be to trim out the new door, and then I can move on to the chair rail and baseboards.

Of course, the crown molding will be the most challenging part of the trim. And working alone makes it even more challenging, but I’ve done it plenty of times, so I know I can do it.

So while I still have quite a way to go, it has come a long way so far. I looked at this for far too long…

So while there’s still a lot to do, this feels like a big step forward.

  1. Remember to take care of your shoulder! Wasn’t it doing something overhead that took it down last time? Looking forward to the progress!! It’s starting to look so gorgeous!

  2. It is amazing to me how the simple act of painting the walls, although it is only step one in the process, makes it feel like you’ll be moving into an entirely new house, located conveniently within the confines of your current house! Love it!

  3. WOW!!! I knew that it would “feel” bigger, but it looks like a whole different space without that closet, what a change. I am glad that Princess Felicity was giving her seal of approval on everything. It looks amazing and I can’t wait to see more. Remember, slow and steady wins the race and don’t compromise on your safety with regards to the crown molding. Stay safe young lady.
Cheers to you, Matt, and the fur crew!

  4. Dear Kristi,
Good Morning! You’re making wonderful progress. Soon you and Matt will be enjoying this lovely space!
My suggestion for the former eating area bench for the bedroom foyer, is to shorten it by about 8″, so that it is a bit shorter than (and fits within) the trim box on that foyer wall. That would be the perfect dimensions to my eye.
You may want to keep the other one until you get all your furniture into your bedroom. It may make a nice end-of-bed bench.
I’m happy to be along for the ride~! The bedroom suite is already such an amazingly-unique space. It’ll only become more so as you add your talent, skill and vision to each surface.
    Enjoy your day!

    YHWH Bless You : )

  5. That part where you said you were disappointed at first when your original plans fell through and it seemed like it was broken and you felt like you were settling for less, but now it is turning out better than your original plans… I feel that. That’s God though! All the time it seems like something is not working out or everything is going wrong, but when you put your life in God’s hands, He is always working out something better. 🙂

  6. One thought…

You do plan to leave plenty of time for the paint to cure before installing the grasscloth? IIRC it should cure close to a month or it can cause the wallpaper to bubble and peel. And I know that would be devastating since you have just enough.

    1. Yes, I’m going to finish all of the trim, and then take time to make the headboard and draperies, and then I’ll come back to the wallpaper. It might not be a full 30 days, but close.

  7. It’s looking so good. One thought … on things like the crown molding, where it would be helpful just to have someone hold up the ‘other’ end for you, couldn’t you hire a helper for a couple of hours? Maybe someone/a teen from your church? Not to do the actual work, which requires more skill, just to help with the awkward logistics of long pieces?
