The New Foyer Light Is Up!
Well, I’m still working on trim in the bedroom. I’m so irritated that it’s taking this long, but all I can do is keep moving forward and keeping my eye on the end goal. But I did take some time out from working on trim yesterday to install the new foyer ceiling light. I just needed to see something pretty.
If you’ll remember, I had to move the light in the foyer. This foyer used to be much larger than it is now, so the ceiling junction box for the light was no longer centered in the foyer.
So after taking that light down, installing a junction box in the correct spot, and moving the wire over to the new box, I used this drywall patch to cover over the hole for the old junction box.
In fact, I didn’t even remove the old junction box because it was a new work box, which meant that it was put in place before the drywall went up. So getting it out would have caused more damage to the drywall, and that would have required even more repair. So I just left the old metal junction box right where it is, stuck this patch over it, and then applied the drywall mud on top.
And as you can see, it still needs to be sanded, primed, and painted. I had hoped to get that done yesterday, but the drywall mud was still wet when I went to bed last night. So I’ll have to get that done this weekend.
But here is the new light, and I absolutely love it!
As it turns out, I won’t have to turn the HVAC intake vent around after all. There’s about an inch of space between the vent cover and the light, so it opens freely without banging into the light.
Of course, I still need to clean the vent cover. 😀 I’m trying to keep the filter changed regularly as I’m still working on dusty projects, but I’m not going to take the time to clean the vent cover until all of the dusty projects are finished. I’m so close!! But I just created one more dusty project with that drywall patch on the ceiling.
This light is from Wayfair (affiliate link), and overall, I really love it. But I would give it about an 8 out of 10 rating for two reasons.
First, the installation instructions were a joke. I’m pretty sure this light was made in China, and the instructions were written by someone who knows very little English. That was very unhelpful. I was able to figure it out because I’ve installed countless lights in my life. It was pretty straightforward, but as I was taking the pieces out of the packaging, there were a couple of pieces that baffled me, and I had no idea what how they went on the fixture. But I finally figured it out through a process of elimination.
And second, the ring that goes at the ceiling (i.e., the canopy, or beauty ring, or whatever it’s called) is made of very thin metal. I wasn’t pleased with that at all. The rest of the light is well made, but that canopy just feels thin and cheap, like it could bend easily. Thankfully, I managed to get it installed without damaging it. And once it was up, I loved the look of the light. I still need to get the proper lightbulbs for it, and I also want to get a dimmer switch for the light. The only bulbs I had on hand are all wrong and almost blindingly bright, and I only have two of the four bulbs in there right now.
So until I can get the proper bulbs, I’ll just keep the light off and admire it more as jewelry for the ceiling rather than a useful ceiling light.
The good news is that I really like how it looks from every direction. It even looks great with the light in the music room, which I’ll show y’all as soon as I can get the music room cleaned up a bit. 😀 Right now, it’s cluttered with stuff from this bedroom project.
My main concern was how it would look outside the closet, but I think it looks fantastic! It subtly carries that flower motif onto the ceiling, even though it’s not overtly a flower light fixture.
So at least I could mark off one project from my “to do” list yesterday, even if the trim is taking forever.
In other news, I found the fabric that I’m going to use on one of the pillows for the bench in the foyer. And it’s a hand towel! I’ve had these tea towels for a long time, and I happened to have one in my hand when I walked into the foyer from the kitchen. I tossed the towel on the bench, and when I came back to get it, I realized it would be perfect as a pillow cover!
Since the ones I have have actually been used as towels to dry dishes, and they’ve been through the wash countless times, I went ahead and ordered two more new ones to use as a pillow cover. I love how it has the light blue from the closet and pulls that color into the foyer.
So that was a happy accident and a chance discovery. I bought these towels from Werkshoppe, and they have so many cute and colorful designs. So if you’re looking for tea towels OR fabric for pillow covers, you might check them out!
Well, it looks like I’ll be spending my weekend on trim. I’m not even going to say that I’ll finish it this weekend, because y’all have seen how well that’s worked out for me this last week. Ugh. I was so sure I’d be done by last Monday, but here I am, still working on trim. It’ll get done eventually, though. I’m just doing what I can each day and trying to stay focused.

The new light fixture looks very pretty in your foyer. I like how the white and gold look against the teal walls and with the mirror. Installing something pretty was a good reward for getting a lot of work done and to encourage yourself to keep moving forward. Finding that the tea towel works perfectly with the closet wallpaper was a happy event.
Even your kitchen tea towels are lovely and vibrant… LOL.

I am glad you chose that light fixture. It won my vote, too. For all the reasons you noted, it is perfect.
And how fun that the tea towel was lurking in wait to select for that pillow cover. I love discovering things like that. Not surprising if we know the colors we are drawn to and we stay consistent with our vision while also being open to creative surprises.
Here in Ecuador consignment stores are not all that common. There is one here in Cuenca I visit from time to time, which I did yesterday. I found some decorative treasures to play with. Three of the items ended up looking better in different spots other than where I had intended to put them. I smile when I see how happy small touches can make me feel. I think that happens to you too. This room of your home will be a great spot for you and Matt. It is coming together beautifully.
I love that light. Great choice and I think it looks amazing right where you have it. Love the happy accident with the fabric, sometimes that is how it all comes together. Oh, how I love instructions that have been translated or not, like take your second thumb on your third hand and give it a twist, or place slot A into slot B… what, no tabs??? If they have pictures on the box, I am good to go. Have fun with the trim but know how GORGEOUS it is coming out.

I wanted to ask you about the bench you used in the spare bedroom… it looked more appropriate in size for the corner in the foyer, and I wondered if you would use that one for the instead? This bench looks too large for the corner. I love your idea for the tea towel as a pillow cover, it’s lovely and goes so perfect. Great eye!
Do you mean bench at the desk in front of the window? That is a very pretty bench and if it’s the right length it would be very pretty in the foyer. I agree that the bench from the tv/breakfast room is a bit too long for the wall in the foyer but some people may think that is nit picky. I suggested Kristi could cut it down because she’s so talented but she may not feel it’s worth the effort.
