Tips on how to organize the information on your blog

Are you confused and overwhelmed at how to arrange and organize your blog?  I was…for almost four years.  When I finally moved to WordPress in December 2011, I decided to really put some thought into how I organized my posts, and to utilize my categories to the fullest. So I got busy making lists of the categories that I used over and over, and then deciding how to arrange all of the information so that my posts organized and easy to find for my readers.  (One of my biggest pet peeves when I visit a blog is not having a clear cut way to locate older posts on topics that interest me.)

I’ve definitely found a blog organization method that works for me.  I won’t say that it’s the only way, or even the right way, but hopefully this behind-the-scenes look at Addicted 2 Decorating will help you as you decide how to arrange your blog and your posts in a way that will not only help you, but will also make site navigation easier on your readers.

If you have any questions, I’d love to answer them (if I can)!

    Great tips, Kristi!
I am desperately trying to make my site more easy to navigate. I have not utilized “categories” like I should. This helped a lot.
    Thanks!

      Hi Matthew~
I use the Genesis Featured Widget Amplified (on the Widgets page) in conjunction with the Portfolio pages that come pre-installed on the Lifestyle child theme. As far as I know, Lifestyle is the only child theme that comes with the Portfolio pages pre-installed, but you can manually add them to other child themes. Looks like you’re using the same Innov8tive theme that I’m using, so you would have to add them manually, and the .php code has to be uploaded directly to your server (i.e., not through your WP dashboard). I’d be happy to send it to you if you want to give it a try, but just a fair warning…the is a bit of coding that has to be done in order to get the gallery to look like you want it to look.

Thanks for posting this, I’m going to have to check out the genesis theme now. Your site is beautiful! I’m in the process of migrating and already have a new blog name picked out. I think I will buy your book, too.

Very strange, Christina! I opened this post on Chrome, and I could see it just fine. Anyway, try clicking directly to YouTube and see if you can just view it there:

Hi Kristi! You have truly inspired me to begin again. I have taken care of my mother in law for three years and basically quit blogging. She is now in an assisted living facility and I’m going to start blogging again. Your videos are great!

In this one you mention about coding menus and linking, and that you have a tutorial for sale. Where is the link to it? I think it may solve a problem I’ve run into.

    Thank you in advance!

    Kristi,
I have a question for you! If you do a DIY project that involves say…lighting. Making a beautiful light or re-doing lamps etc. What category would you put it under or would you put it under both DIY projects and Lighting?

Thank you for sharing your approach. I’ve struggled with the best way to organize my site, categories vs names of the navigation links. Tags…Your video was the most informative and specific, the search results I kept pulling up were not so I’m glad I finally came across your site. Beautiful design too!
