Wallpaper Options For My Closet Ceiling

On Friday, I shared that I’m leaning towards using pink (or a pinkish coral) paint color in the walk-in closet, and I also want to wallpaper the ceiling. So just for fun (even though I still have a whole lot to do before I can even start on the closet), I’ve been looking at options for wallpaper that I can use on the ceiling and use as a jumping off point for finding a paint color for the walls and closet components.

In last Friday’s post, I ended with a photo of a closet that I thought was so inspiring. It was huge and had a super high ceiling. Mine won’t be huge (compared to that one), and I’ll have an eight-foot ceiling. But I did love the light, bright, wispy appearance of the floral wallpaper on the ceiling, and I also loved the light pink on the cabinets and closets. If you missed that, you can see it here: A Pink Wallpapered Walk-In Closet? Yes, Please!

So that’s the direction I started out when I was looking for wallpaper for my ceiling — light, bright, wispy, watercolory. The first one I found that fit the bill was this Spring Floral Meadow by Lolah Studio on Spoonflower.

I love that wallpaper, and I think it would be gorgeous on a ceiling in a closet. But I think it might be a little too pastel for my taste. If you look around my house, you’ll notice that I love color, but it’s very rarely a true pastel color. Some of my colors may border on pastel, some patterns may include pastel, but the overall look is going to have a bit more punch than a pastel palette does.

A good example is the wallpaper in my studio. Because it’s a watercolor look, some of those colors in the wallpaper may be very pastel-adjacent. But the overall look of the wallpaper has a lot more punch to it than a pastel palette would have.

So while I do really like that first wallpaper, I don’t think that pastels are really me. The word that comes to mind is precious. It’s just a little precious for my taste.

And then I came across this one. This is Wild Grasses by Ninola Design on Spoonflower. If it looks familiar, that’s because I bought this wallpaper in the teal colorway (i.e., teal background) to use in the hallway bathroom. And yes, I still plan to use it in the hallway bathroom. But that wouldn’t stop me from using this one with the white background on the closet ceiling. This wallpaper is colorful and fun. It has that watercolor look to it that I love so much. And while it does include some of those pastel colors, the overall look of it isn’t pastel.

This one would be a safe choice. I’ve purchased it once, and I already know I love it. I also really like that it has orange in it. I don’t think the closet necessarily needs to match the bedroom since the two will have the “buffer” of a hallway between them, but I don’t want it to clash with the bedroom, either. So I like that this particular wallpaper has the orange and green and touches of teal while also introducing pink into the mix.

Next up is Floral Splendor from Rebel Walls. I actually saw this wallpaper a while back and ordered a sample. At the time, I had our future dining room (i.e., the current kitchen) in mind, but I’ve since realized that it won’t work for my idea in the dining room. So it’s a free agent now and can be drafted for use in the closet.

I also got pretty excited about May Meadow in the pastel colorway from Rebel Walls. It also has orange and green, as well as pink. I think it would play nicely with the bedroom next door. I know it’s more of a bottom-heavy mural, but the good thing about Rebel Walls is that you can customize the size before ordering. So I would have the flowers “growing” from the two side walls and “growing” towards the midline of the room. I have no idea if that makes sense, but I can picture it in my mind.

Okay, y’all. This one might surprise you, but this wallpaper literally stopped me in my scroll, and I gasped when I saw it. This is Vinum Raspeys from Rebel Walls.

I honestly think this might be my favorite. I’m sitting here in my studio looking at it while also seeing my bird fabric for the headboard spread out on the work table, and they actually look really pretty together. Of course, they won’t be in the same room, but at least they won’t fight each other. This has some orange and teal, but also has reddish pinks.

I can just imagine this on the ceiling. It would feel like I’m standing underneath an arbor that is covered in gorgeous vines. I was surprised at how much I loved this last one. It’s definitely darker than what I would usually think I’d like, but I can imagine it with a pink on the cabinets that’s pulled from that pink that’s in the wallpaper. I think it would be gorgeous!

So anyway, I surprised even myself with that last one. And what surprises me the most is that if I were forced to choose one today and order it, I would choose the last one. Hands down. I think it’s probably one of the most gorgeous wallpapers I’ve ever seen, if not THE most beautiful. Had I seen this wallpaper two years ago, I may have chosen it over the mural I used in our bathroom. That’s how much I love it. I am going to order a sample of it so that I can get an idea of what pink(s) I could use on the cabinets to go with it. That might be a huge factor in whether or not it’s a real option for the closet. But if it doesn’t end up working for the closet ceiling, I might have to find another place for it.

  1. I am with you! The last one is amazing! It’s beautiful and I think it will be perfect in your closet. It doesn’t rank above your bathroom mural for me, that mural is stunning! Your master bath is my favorite room in your house!🩷

  2. Have you considered Rifle Paper’s Garden Party? It comes in a few different color ways that I think would work. I have it in my laundry room with white cabinets and pink walls! It’s the perfect amount of whimsy and I’m working in some white subway tile with green pencil liner.

    1. I do love that pattern, but for me, that’s something I’d come closer to wearing than putting on my walls (or ceiling). I always love Rifle Paper Co’s collabs with apparel and accessory makers! One of my favorite pairs of shoes is my embroidered floral Rifle Paper Co. X Keds sneakers.

    1. Oh my gosh, that’s it! And do you know what’s crazy? As I was writing that last part of the post, that if it doesn’t work out for my closet I’d have to find another place for it, my mind went immediately to, “I wonder if I could use it in the kitchen.” 😀 It would look gorgeous with some teal cabinets!!

      1. I knew it was very, very, very similar. Your eyes must be better than mine because I can’t tell the difference. Paper is stunning.

      2. I think the leaves/flowers are larger and more defined in the raspeys one versus the plum. That is the only difference I see between the two.

        1. I wish I could edit my first response to add. I think that the yellow flowers/leaves stand out a lot more than on the raspeys one. On it, I don’t see a color that stands out as much. Oh, and the price difference is huge.

      1. Since you are still in the planning stages, it will be very easy to add a vent fan to the laundry room, and I think it would be a really good idea, especially with the level of humidity you have there in Texas.

We have a vent fan that has an automatic sensor, so when it senses too much humidity, it automatically goes on, then goes off by itself when it has removed the excess moisture. It is really a great vent fan, because you never need to remember to turn it on or off.

One more laundry room suggestion: Have your plumber install a drain underneath your washing machine, so that if it ever breaks and leaks, it protects your floors.

  3. As I scrolled through the choices I liked each one better than the previous one. I was intrigued by the idea of having the mural growing towards the center of the room. The last one is absolutely gorgeous!

  4. I can’t imagine the actual act of putting wallpaper on a ceiling. It is bad enough putting it on a wall. It is very pretty on a ceiling. That last one will really darken your closet as opposed to the light and airy you like your rooms to be.

  5. Wyse Guide used wallpaper on his ceiling. It’s more in line with your last. It’s beautiful. If you don’t follow him, look it up it’s featured under his home remodel tour upstairs. The lush fullness is like a canopy, and so nice!

  6. I love your color choices for your closet but I would recommend a more soothing wallpaper. Perhaps a watercolor look with a larger scale. The ones you’ve chosen look way too busy to me, especially in a small space.

  7. Hmm, haven’t read the post yet, but looking at the pictures I see how some of these wallpapers have a bottom and a top side, and it almost creates an illusion of volume… and I’m wondering, how would a wallpaper of this kind look if you installed it in a way it’s symmetrical, so that the two “top” sides meet in the middle of the room (basically, left side of ceiling and right side of ceiling being sort of a mirror image). Can you do a mockup of this, or maybe try something like it when you get some samples?

  8. LOVE THE LAST ONE!!!
Second choice is Floral Splendor for a lighter feel.
But, love the drama of the last one!!!
Just one concern, the laundry set is cobalt – do we consider them in the color scheme? Even though they are in their own room, they would be seen from the closet would they not?
Floral Splendor has some cobalt in it…

  9. I still love the birds and branches pattern you used in the entry a few iterations ago, and wanted to use a couple other times also. Does it have the right color scheme for the closet ceiling?

  10. I love wallpaper but Gary won’t let me have any because he doesn’t like wallpaper. I like the second one, like what you already have in another color, because it is light. You want your closet room light, I think. The last one is beautiful, but it is too dark and will shrink your room. You could maybe use it someplace in your add on section. The one that is “border” wallpaper will be all confusing on the ceiling.
Stick with what you KNOW. You know you like “Wild Grasses”.
Whatever you decide on, the room will be wonderful.

  11. The Vinum Raspeys is spectacular. I’ve added it to the mood board for the ceiling in my planned black walled powder room.

    1. That would be amazing! It would be interesting to compare how paint colors change the look of the wallpaper — yours with black and mine with a light pink. Yours will have a very dramatic and moody look. I hope you do it!

  12. That last one is everything. It’s dreamy and a bit mystical. If my husband were a wallpaper person, I would put that up in the bedroom behind the bed.

  13. Although I am not a big fan of wallpaper, I love the last one….oh no! I may be a bigger fan of wallpaper than I thought!

  14. The last wallpaper is STUNNING. WOW. Love it. May try to find it to use some way myself! Has depth, color and pure class!
