Bright, Colorful, Happy Interiors

Every once in a while, as I’m reading blogs or looking at magazines, I find myself being drawn into the all-neutral-color-palette-vortex, and wishing that I could start over on my little condo.

And then I see pictures like these, which make me realize that neutral is just not for me…

I love color—bright, happy color! So what about you? What type of color palette are you drawn to for your interiors? Neutrals? Dark, moody colors? Bright, happy colors? Mostly neutrals with touches of bright color?

By the way, if you haven’t discovered Pinterest yet, you’re missing out!!  Now if only I could figure out how to open up my own Pinterest account!  Do any of you know how to become one of “the chosen”?

  1. Those images are gorgeous! I love the gray + yellow. I think my favorite right now is turquoise + red, because it's so unexpected. Powerful, yet feminine.

Here's a funny neutrals story: Once while browsing design books at the bookstore, this woman wandered up to browse as well. She was wearing a white shirt, tan pants, brown shoes and had a brown leather handbag. And she picked up a book titled, "Decorating with Neutrals." Haha. I had to laugh.

  2. I also love the gray room. We are redecorating a 1920's brick house, and I love dark colors. Deep reds, browns, lots of traditional woodwork and crown molding. My personal style has come a long way from my first apartment 10 years ago which I decorated with every Apple accessory I could get my hands on at Wal-mart!
Love the blog, keep it coming!

  3. I love neutrals, and I wish I could get out of being stuck in the neutrals only.I guess I'm not color savvy. I have changed my bathroom into, a grayish blue and added a black mirror and shower curtain with a mix of greens, light yellow, and a tint of beige.

  4. I am always torn between the two. I love to look at the neutral, but I would always add color- I don't think I could help it.

  5. Every house we've owned has been a different color scheme. First one, very country (dark red/forest green/navy blue… and lots of apples too!). Second one, brights (we had toddlers… it worked considering most of the house had big bright toys in it). Third, Tuscan colors. This one, all neutral! I love it. Tan/brown/gray/black/white/cream… and then I decorate for the holidays and seasons with bright, bold colors and it works great. I've only painted 5 rooms so far, but I'm loving the neutrals.

  6. I love neutrals, and lean towards earth tones. Our living room has pops of red- as does my kitchen. I love the colorful look & proposed it to my husband at one time, but he crinkled his nose at it. We are currently finishing our basement & I am decorating my "mommy retreat" room (AKA craft room with a treadmill…) in bright colors & florals. The upstairs living room will be my domain as well, and I'm pondering some ideas. I'm not repainting the walls- its a great room- connects to the kitchen- too much to paint, but I have some ideas….whether he likes them or not! hee hee

  7. To fit with the color scheme already built into the house we bought (dark walnut cabinet colors, slate flooring (green, grey, brown), tan carpets and walls, etc) I've played it safe and stayed with rich earth tones- rust, olive green, chocolate brown, black. What brighter color could I include with this palette? I look at the pictures above and I LOVE the color.

  8. The grey and yellow room is by far my favorite, however the mint painted ceiling in the pink room is tastefully done. Painting the ceiling is such a great way to get a custom and expensive look on the cheap.

  9. Yes, Kristy, I too look at neutral colour schemes & think they look so sophisticated — but I'm sure it wouldn't stay that long with an active family & lifestyle!!
I've always brought in colour — peach, green, yellow, red. I've painted this house a beautiful blue to match the water outside — accessories are in neutrals [ivory, black] but also in colours like yellow, gold, red, & other shades of blue.
    I love it!

  10. Our house is done almost entirely in neutrals and light colors. After seeing these pictures I finally understand why it's DRIVING ME BATTY! These are SO gorgeous and fresh and exciting!! I love them. 😀

  11. Kristi,

I love reading your blog! I have sent you an invite to Pinterest, so please don't be alarmed. 🙂

  12. One word… "Skittles". Literally, it feels like these rooms were inspired by colour, vibrant… eye catching colour. I have to agree, my living room is neutral with subtle punches of colour but now I want to revamp and breathe more life into my space. Could you imagine waking up to that, ugh. If only. haha. Thanks for sharing! Norah

  13. Oh man! What a color combination. My eyes really remained watching these pictures.. Man these are really awesome.

  14. love the image with the different colored chairs. I lean towards neutrals too but I love these images as they combine color and still maintain the light airiness that those who love neutrals tend to like.
