Five Grasscloth Options For Our Bedroom Walls
In case you haven’t heard, we’re going to turn our current home gym into our bedroom. So I’ve been trying to put together a decorating plan for that room so that I’ll be ready to implement it as soon as the new floor and subfloor have been installed and I’ve had a chance to stain and seal the new floor. And since grasscloth is probably my favorite of all wallcoverings, and this might be my last chance to use it, I’m about 85% sure that I’ll be using grasscloth in our bedroom.
If I’m going to do grasscloth, it has to be teal…obviously. I wouldn’t even consider another color. So I ordered five different samples from two different companies, and I’ll show you what they look like. I wanted to see what they look like in the bathroom because, while I don’t need the grasscloth I choose to match the bathroom, I also don’t want it to clash with what’s going on in there. Immediately, I thought that two of them could be ruled out, leaving me with three choices. And of those three choices, I immediately loved one of them far more than the other two.
Here’s a look at all five. Can you guess which one was my favorite?
I’ll go in order and tell you my thoughts. This first one is one of the three finalists. This is Gallant Grasses Crown Jewel by Phillip Jeffries. I love the texture and the overall color. What I don’t like is that the lightest background color almost looks fluorescent in person. It demands way too much attention. If that background color was toned down a bit, this grasscloth would probably be my favorite.
I was really hoping that this second one would be the one because it’s the only one that’s actually vinyl, which means it’s very easy to clean. This is Madagascar Raffia Emerald Sea by Phillip Jeffries. It has a beautiful texture, so it looks like the real thing. Unfortunately, it’s too green for my taste, so I ruled it out. I prefer my teals to be more on the blue side with a touch of green mixed in. This one looks like it’s on the green side with a touch of blue mixed in.
Next up is Juicy Jute Tantalizing Teal by Phillip Jeffries. This is the exact grasscloth that I used to have on the entryway wall. And then I used it on the drawers of the console table in the entryway. Since I’ve actually used it before, I know I love it, which is why it’s obviously in the final three.
Next up is this Deep Teal Blue Heavy Bamboo grasscloth. I had high hopes for this one because I love this type of grasscloth with the flat, wide bamboo strips. But the color is completely off. It has way too much green in it, and the overall color is too flat and lifeless. There’s no vibrancy to it at all, so I ruled this one out almost immediately.
And finally, there’s this beauty. This is called Cool Teal Sisal Grasscloth. I wasn’t expecting much from this one, and I almost didn’t order it, because on the product listing page it looks so green. And I like my teals on the blue side. I’m so glad I went ahead and ordered it, though, because it’s the perfect teal! In person, it’s absolutely stunning.
I’m pretty sure that’s the grasscloth that is shown in this image from the home page of that website:
I know it looks a lot lighter and brighter in my photo, but that’s because I took the photo at night and had all of the lights turned on. In person, and depending on the lighting, it does have that deep, dark, rich look to it.
Here’s a look at all five against the mural again. The contenders are 1, 3, and 5. And I guess I’ve already given it away, but the last one is my favorite. It’s not the one that matches the mural the best, but again, I don’t need it to match. It’ll be in the next room. I just don’t want it to clash, and I think that the last one complements the bathroom nicely.
Here’s a look at all five against the wall. This was taken at night with all of the lights turned on.
I took a couple more pictures this morning after the sun came up because colors look a little different in that light.
And here’s another look at them against the mural in the morning light.
If my goal were to choose the one that matched the bathroom the best, I’d go with Juicy Jute Tantalizing Teal (the middle one), which is the one I’ve used before. Here’s what it looked like in the entryway.
It’s definitely a very pretty grasscloth. But next to that last one, it doesn’t even compare. That last one has a richness and depth of color to it that all of the others lack.
If I were to choose today, I’d go with that last one. I can just picture it with white wainscoting, those gauzy white curtains, a beautiful upholstered headboard, etc. I think it’ll be beautiful, right? Or do you think I’m making a mistake by not going with the one that more closely matches the bathroom?
Addicted 2 Decorating is where I share my DIY and decorating journey as I remodel and decorate the 1948 fixer upper that my husband, Matt, and I bought in 2013. Matt has M.S. and is unable to do physical work, so I do the majority of the work on the house by myself. You can learn more about me here.
That last one is so BEAUTIFUL! And I think you were absolutely right that it complements the bathroom/mural. It was SO pretty next to the “painted” bathroom walls, and I can see your vision of the bedroom. I think you should go for it!
The fifth one is beautiful!! As you said, it only needs to not-clash, doesn’t need to match perfectly. It’s a different room! (And to me it /does/ match anyway, it looks like a darker shade of the walls/mural colours, based on the photos). I think if you love it so much then that’s good enough reason to choose it, no mistake at all 🙂
I think your instincts are always spot on! Go with #5!
That cool teal sisal is a great choice! In my opinion, it is more interesting to have colors that harmonize than to have colors that match exactly. There will still be continuity with the rest of your house without repetition. And the richness will be wonderful for a bedroom.
Wow I can’t get over how diff other samples look depending on the lighting! I immediately liked #3 but in different pictures I can see why you like #5. I can’t recall are you planning to only use it on the top part of the wall and have white wainscoting on the bottom? Some pictures the sample looks so dark I’d worry it was too dark to do the full wall. Love all the texture and color variations in grasscloth glad you’re planning to use it- I miss that entryway wall 😊
I’ll only do the top portion of the wall, and then have white wainscoting on the bottom 30 inches. I like that idea for two reasons. First, it keeps the dark grasscloth from taking over too much and making the room to dark. I love the contrast of dark on top and white on bottom. But also, I have a cat. I’d be so afraid that she’d use the grasscloth walls as a scratching post if she could easily reach it. So the wainscoting will prevent that.
I am in the middle of the same thing right now. I am changing out our master suite and want the bath and bedroom to coordinate, not be matchy-matchy. So, I get this quandary very well. You are the one who gets to look at this, live with this and dream with this. I love how you are incorporating the bath into the bedroom and how they will play off each other. I am curious, would you consider fabric that mimics the mural in the bathroom for the upholstered headboard??? It’s just a thought. Or a feature wall with a more faded look of the mural??? I cannot wait to see what you come up with, as it will blow all of us away, I love your creativity. I love that number 5 sample, but I also liked the #2, but I am looking through a different lens with my computer screen and am not there in person. Ever Forward.
Cheers!
I don’t think I’d want to repeat the mural in any way in the bedroom. At most, maybe I would use some artwork that gives a subtle nod to the bathroom mural.
i think you should go with the one that makes your heart sing…
I totally agree Vi. That’s been my standard for several years now. The rest doesn’t matter.
I really like the Tantalizing Teal!
I love the luscious last one! I think it’s perfect for you.
I’d suggest checking them up against the striped velvet that you were considering as an accent fabric in the room.
While I was reading this, I picked the middle one. You are making the final decision and should pick the last one if it “speaks” to you. Your decisions are so good. Take care.
I prefer when colours compliment each other and not necessarily match. And I love the deep colour, the deepest of all of them. It looks luxurious.
Forgot to ask, could you take a photo of it against that beautiful striped velvet?
My eye was immediately drawn to the last one. I know it will not be right by the mural, but it definitely compliments it. I think it’s beautiful!!!
You do you. You are the only one that has to like it. I think 3 & 5 are both beautiful and you couldn’t go wrong with either.
I love love the last one! It not a mistake at all.
I think the last one is perfect. Can’t wait to see the room finished
My first impression was that the last 2 were too dark but then again, it’s being used in the bedroom where a darker tone may be better for sleeping. I do love the blue wall in the guest bedroom. It will definitely contrast with the white trim and curtains. I like high contrast, especially in colored objects. Just go for it!
I also like the dark one you like. It will make for a dramatic, moody bedroom.
I loved the Tantalizing teal from the start, even before I knew it was the one in your entryway. It’s still my choice but you never cease to amaze me with your vision!!
I like the one you chose also. I love your wall that you hung your samples on. Did you marbleize it or was it some other technique?
I used Modern Masters Venetian Plaster in a custom color that I mixed myself.
My pick was the middle one, although I do see the beautiful sheen in the last one. It’s just dark for my taste, is all. I don’t prefer a dark bedroom wall.
Go for it. It’s already making your heart sing. You won’t be happy with the others now after seeing that one. 😁
Definitely 5!!!!!
Something I noticed over 50 years of decorating my homes is that a mixture of blues is feel more upscale and pleasing to my eye than matching the blues. It’s really stretched me go in that direction because my safe zone is matching the blues. But the rooms I really fall for always do a mix and my rooms sometimes feel flat when I’ve finished them. So I suggest you go with your dark blue choice for the bedroom.
I picked the last one immediately. I thought, “Oh No, she will go with 3. “
My comment – won’t the particular dye lots possibly be off from this exact color? I too was immediately drawn to #5, for the same reasons. The depth of color is rich, like indigo inks.
It may be off slightly, but that’s fine.
Besides what you have described, what else will be in the room? I like # 5 the best but doing the entire plan first makes more sense to me. All sample of furniture color and fabrics affixed to a board to envision the whole. If you plan to use that striped fabric, how does it look with the grasscloth you like?
Go with the one you love Kristi! It will be stunning with the white. I actually love that it doesn’t match perfectly. It almost seems to pull out some hidden darker tones in the bathroom mural and wall treatment. And the darker color will be so restful for your bedroom. I love the direction you’re going with wood tones, the grasscloth, and flowy white curtains. Your bedroom will be a luxurious respite! Can’t wait to see it all come together. Blessings from NC
LOVE that last one that you love!
Rich depth of color. – it’s so YOU!
Like you said, you are not putting it in your bathroom. You could go with any color that compliments the bathroom mural. I like teal too. The last one looks too dark to me and will shrink the appearance of your room. I like the really rough one because it seems lighter and it is rough like grass cloth. (Duh)
You have a lap full of decisions to make. You will do what is right for you and Matt.
#1 I don’t care for the larger pieces that look like chunks of branches in it. #2 Looks like burlap, not grass cloth. #3 Has the advantage of you knowing you like it on your wall. It has a lavender tone in it which picks up the lavender in the mural. #4 I love the flat bamboo texture but it does have green in it that you aren’t fond of. #5 Has a beautiful texture to it and the colors are lovely although they appear royal blue/navy blue and not teal on my computer. If you aren’t hung up on have “teal” it would be a great choice.
I love grass wall paper too, it looks so luxe! I hope you don’t mind the following question (it came to mind when you wrote about looking forward to seeing this new wallpaper finished and trimmed.) I am seeing (gasp) stained wood trim in add for finishes lately, like some high-end looking tile companies in my facebook feed. I don’t think I am ever going to get used to that after a lifetime of getting rid of bossy brown trim. Do you think this is a trend? What do you think of it?
Kristi…I don’t know anything about grasscloth. But, I plan on learning all about it by watching you use it on your new bedroom wall.
Number 5 was my immediate favourite when I saw the first photo. Definitely the best choice!
I read through the comments and it looks like I am the only person who thinks #5 is too intense. A whole wall in that color could be dark and overwhelming. My first choice would be #3, but in one of your photos it looked very gray. Personally, I would choose the first one. The color is Beautiful, and a touch lighter than five.
I thought for sure #3 would be your favorite! #5 is very pretty and I really like the color. But consider if it will show dust too much? As dark as it is you might end up needing to vacuum your walls more than you intended
