My Favorite Reasonably-Priced Bamboo Shades For Windows

When we lived in our condo, I found some amazing reasonably-priced bamboo shades at Home Depot. They could customize the width for me, and I also found that I could do it myself using my miter saw. After all, they were wood shades. Those bamboo shades became my go-to shades of choice on all of the windows in the condo (all four of them 😀 ), and I also used them when we moved into our house. Any time someone I knew was looking for bamboo shades, I’d recommend them. When I was decorating other people’s homes, I would use these shades. I mean, that’s how much I loved them.

And then Home Depot stopped carrying them. Lowe’s had other bamboo shades, but they didn’t have anything like my favorite ones. I searched and searched online, and never could find any that were exactly like my favorites. I found similar ones, but I was always disappointed with them.

As I’ve been working my way through the rooms of our house, I had one remaining shade from the condo that would work on a window in the house, and that’s the window in the pantry. But after I used that one, and found that the other three that I had didn’t fit any of the windows in our house, I never could find more of those shades.

Well, guess what I found! Yes, that’s right. I found a source for my favorite reasonably-priced bamboo shades!! I found them right here on Amazon. (It’s a small store called Mood Store that sells on Amazon.)

I ordered one for the bathroom window on September 8, and it arrived yesterday (September 19). They customized the width and the length to fit my window based on the measurements I sent to them, so it’s perfect!

And it only cost $90. I was so excited when I unpackaged it yesterday and saw just how perfect it was! The quality is great, and while this shade isn’t lined, the bamboo pieces are placed close enough together so that it offers semi-privacy. It’s not quite the privacy that you’ll get from a shade lined with blackout lining (like all of our other shades are), but it does offer a good amount of privacy.

And I think the price is great considering that they’ll customize the length and width. I got the cordless shade in the color Rustic Walnut.

These shades are so incredibly easy to install. Once I got everything unpackaged, I think this shade took me all of 10 minutes to install, if that. (But I do have plenty of experience installing these, so that helps also.)

The shades are mounted on this wood rail that has a slot on each end…

And this is what the hardware looks like. They provide one of these brackets for each slot. My shade had two slots, so it came with two brackets. (I have seen shades that are so wide that they require a slot and a bracket in the middle as well.)

Once the bracket is installed, the threaded post on the bracket slides into the slot.

And then it’s secured on the other side with a washer and wingnut.

So I took a quick measurement to determine where I wanted my shade. I like my shades to be pulled forward so that they’re closer to the room side of the window jambs rather than being shoved further back against the window. So I measured, marked, and screwed the two brackets into place…

(Please kindly overlook my dust-covered windows. 😀 ) And then I held the shade up with one hand, making sure that the posts were through the slots, and screwed the wingnuts into place with the other hand.

It’s so quick and easy! And I’m so excited that I have found a source for these shades again.

I love the shades that we have in the rest of our house, but those shades are lined with blackout lining, and they’re also top down/bottom up shades. In other words, the price of one of those shades is about three times the price of my favorite reasonably-priced shades.

I love having shades lined with white blackout lining on the windows facing the street. And I also love the top down/bottom up feature for certain rooms. I can’t imagine not having that feature in our bedroom.

But for windows that don’t face the street, I’m not really concerned with having lined shades. And for our bathroom, I also don’t need the top down/bottom up feature. So this room was a perfect candidate for the more reasonably-priced shade.

I decided to go this direction after getting all of the wood pieces finished. I love the dark walnut wood, but everything felt very weighty and bottom-heavy on this wall. I decided that I needed something to bring some of that rich wood color up into the top half of the wall, and a bamboo window shade was the perfect solution.

Anyway, if you’re looking for reasonably-priced bamboo shades that are beautiful and a good quality, and you don’t need all the fancy add-ons and features, I highly suggest these shades! You can find them here at the Mood Store on Amazon, and the ones I bought are the Rustic Walnut color. After measuring my window, I purchased the size that was the closest fit, and then I sent an email to their customer service (which I found in the Q&A section on the listing) with my exact window measurements (making sure to impress upon them that those were the exact measurements with no deductions) and asked them to customize the size to fit. It fit perfectly!

  1. Of course Home Depot dropped them, that happens every time a big box store carries something that is a good product and a good value. I bought a lot of them myself. I did get some of the Lowe’s ones more recently and you are right, they’re not the same. I’m glad you found these, they look just like the Home Depot ones which I remember being much less than $90. Sigh. My advice is to find a way to hide the cords from cats! Mine shred them and it’s not safe for the cat or the shade!

    1. (She says she got cordless.) Kristi, I’ve ordered several blinds from the company you recommended for your living room, and they were not too expensive in my opinion. Yes, they are more than home improvement stores, but they are totally custom too. Installation is the same as well. I will have to look in to these though if I decide to get more blinds! They look just as nice!

  2. Doing a happy dance for you, lol. Don’tcha love it when a plan comes together? And shucks, I just thought the dust on the windows was a kind of frosting, lol. When will your countertops be installed? The bathroom is looking absolutely stunning! Way to GEAUX, Kristi!

    1. They’ll be coming on Thursday to measure for countertops. My quartz is already ordered, and it’s coming from Houston, so if it’s not already here, it should be here any day now. Once they get the measurements done, I’m not sure how long it will take to be installed. But the delay on that was my fault because I had to redo the one wall around the left vanity, and finish the walls around the other vanity. But it shouldn’t be too much longer now!

  3. In a previous house, my kitchen window overlooked a small wetland area and then the neighbor’s house was on the other side. It was at least 150 feet away, but the neighbors second story master bathroom window faced my kitchen window. The neighbors had semi private shades on their bathroom window. I was never inside to see if they were bamboo or another kind, but semi-private is key the takeaway here. I assume those neighbors couldn’t see out, but I for sure could see in. The husband and I had similar work schedules so as I was putting my breakfast dishes in the dishwasher each morning, there he’d be, standing naked as a jay bird at the bathroom sink shaving or brushing his teeth. The thought of his saggy stark white behind still haunts me. I never had the heart to tell him he was giving a free show, but I did often wonder if it was intentional…I’ll never know. Assuming good in people and this was just an unfortunate choice of window coverings, I’m sure those neighbors thought there’s a wetland area, there’s a blind, nobody will be able to see a thing.

All this to say, even though it’s the side of your house, you have talked about neighbors being on the other side of that bathroom wall. The last thing you want is someone randomly being out and able to see you while you’re tending to your private business. If they’re like me, they’ll be rolling their eyes wondering why you didn’t get the privacy shade that nobody can see through as those images they’d like to forget are seared into their brain.

Please reconsider the semi private blind!

    1. My next-door neighbors recently added a second story to their house. My upstairs bathroom, which has a large window, used to give me a beautiful view of my fenced-in sideyard and two lush trees on the other side. Now it gives me a view directly into the neighbor’s new family room, which they seem to use at least 20 hours a day. More importantly, it gives them a view directly into my bathroom. So now my blinds are kept closed from sundown till the sun’s well up. And on rainy or overcast days. Or any time I have the light on and am using the room for anything other than washing my hands. No more glorious sunlight streaming through and illuminating the upstairs landing and upper part of the stairway. And no more aerial views of my garden and glimpses of the sky. I’ve considered a sheer curtain or stick-on window frosting, but giving my neighbors a shadow show would make me just as uncomfortable as giving them an unfiltered one. I resent hell out of their addition.

    2. Oh my goodness! You gave me a much needed belly laugh… thanks for posting- you are a fine writer as well 😊👍🏻

      1. Could you switch out the new bathroom blinds for the pantry blinds? I know the color is a bit different, but still I’d want total privacy in my bathroom. Just a thought…

  4. We installed a plantation style shutter on our bathroom window and I love it. We used to have a blind, but this is so much easier. You just turn the louver up or down to close before getting in the shower. Very fast and easy. It was from Home Depot and is not wood, so good in a bathroom. Our toilet is situated that we never have to close the shutter when using it. I love have the sunlight in my bathroom. When we used to have blinds, we usually left them closed because of the constant up and down ( the toilet was previously located just below the window and we had to close for the toilet and the shower. I like the look of the blind, but love the easier functionality of the plantation shutters.

  5. Love those old Home Depot bamboo shades from years ago! I was just doing our main bath when I found them for there. I had some in our previous house so I knew they were great. By the time I bought one for our new house they were on clearance so I got it for little money. Best bamboo shades ever and after 20 years they look like new. Bamboo is a lasting choice, we had bought them for our first little home back in the late 70s. When we sold our house 10 years later the buyers loved them and wanted them to stay with the house.
Great option for your spaces, you always make my favorite choices.
Love you home, the colors are me through and through. Not one space I would pass on, I would proudly have them all for my home.

  6. Regardless of the outside view, are you sure you don’t want 100% coverage for your bathroom? They are good looking with your vanities.

  7. Thank you so much for the source!
I’ve been wanting to do these in my living/dining room windows and they added up so fast!
I just might go for it now!
    🤗

  8. Ahh… Finally get to see a good pic of the walnut veneer top of the middle console between the vanities. The lovely bamboo shade is preventing the light from reflecting on the top so now we get to see the console. Lovely walnut console, lovely bamboo window shade. Cudos for rediscovering your favorite brand.

  9. Love the shades! I’m considering purchasing some. Thx for the source. Do u have a source for plantation blinds as well?
    Thx so much
