Out of Curiosity:: What Do You Do With Your Ceiling?

Since I’ve started working on my kitchen ceiling, naturally I’ve been contemplating ceilings quite a bit, and the various things that people do with their ceilings. The possibilities are endless, but even so, it seems that most people opt to paint their ceilings white.

Is this because people just don’t think about it? Because white is so common? Because anything else is just extra work? Costs more money?

I just think in so many cases, ignoring the ceiling can be a real missed opportunity to add a unique touch to a room.

So what ceiling treatment(s) have you tried?  Are you strictly a “white ceiling” kind of person?  Do you like color on the ceiling?  Have you been daring and tried a wallpaper or stencil?

If you’ve done something not listed, I’d love to hear about it!!

  1. I love a beautiful ceiling! That kind of attention to detail makes my heart go pitter patter! But the idea of having my hands over my head for hours on end while balancing precariously on a ladder just outweighs anything I'd ever want to do to my ceiling! Can't wait to see yours though!

  2. My Ceiling? Mostly I try to ignore it. Its COTTAGE CHEESE…uck! We are afraid to scrape it off in case its asbestos. Hate it. If my ceilings were smooth, I'd paint them all light blue, like your 1st photo!

  3. The thought of looking UP to do my ceiling makes my neck hurt before I even touch a roller. So, my ceilings stay white simply to avoid pain. 🙂

  4. I love white with texture — like the painted tin tile photo, and some of your painted wood inspiration photos. It strikes me as a good balance between clean/bright/calm and interesting.

  5. I would love to have wood ceilings, or nice trim and a different color. But for now, it's not even all white. It has patches of unpainted mud from where we fixed areas of the ceiling. I just try not to look up!

  6. My first house had the dreaded popcorn, so those ceilings stayed white. When we moved to our current home, I eventually did something to EVERY ceiling in the house – mostly just paint or faux finishes, but in the basement I got creative and upholstered the ceiling in the home theater room and did a canvas and wood treatment in the pool room. However! We're getting ready to sell and I just went through the house and painted the ceilings in a few rooms white or off-white to make it more buyer-friendly!

  7. Kristi,
You are soooo talented! I would love to do a ceiling treatment but have no idea what to do. Kind of afraid/shy about trying something.

  8. I am definitely into painted ceilings and wood ceilings. A light color on a ceiling can give so much height! I love the pictures you chose. I come to this blog everyday just to see how your projects are going. Keep it up!

  9. I've done other colours on ceilings, but I've gone back to plain old white for now. It's SO HARD to work on ceilings, but I love the way some of those look.

  10. Well I never had a ceiling to paint until recently but I'm going to do something fancy in the rooms are low enough that I don't need to rent a 16ft step ladder and that have a lot of light. I do think that white can really brighten up a room.

  11. This post has totally inspired me to do something with my ceilings!!! Love the wallpaper and tin or the boards!!

  12. I recently wood planked (painted white) my living room ceiling and love the texture it gives the room.

  13. I've only had white ceilings, but I would love to do something different. It is on my bucket list, so to speak.

  14. Our kitchen/dining room ceiling is acoustic tile (maded to look like pressed tin, glued directly to our ceiling. We used high gloss white Rustoleum paint on it. It definately reflects light and is super east to clean. Oh and it looks like real painted tin.
