Perhaps I’m Not As Creative As I Thought
Have you ever come up with a creative idea, worked hard to make your vision a reality, then only to realize that your idea was not your own at all?
This recently happened to me.
Here I am, working so hard on my kitchen, thinking that my design is sooooo unique, and that it’s my own creation, only to realize a few days ago that I’ve been looking at this kitchen for about 16 years. Yep…SIXTEEN YEARS!!
There it all is…turquoise cabinets, butcherblock countertops, white backsplash.
I had never really noticed it until just a few days ago. I watched much of “Friends” as new episodes were airing, but shortly after the series finale, Matt and I purchased all 10 seasons on DVD. We used to watch those things all the time! I’ve probably seen every episode at least three times. And while I never really noticed the kitchen, somewhere along the line, that combo of turquoise cabinets, butcherblock countertops and white backsplash must have been etched into my subconscious mind.
And do you see the yellow also? It’s not only on the chair, the little curtain under the sink and the fabric on the window, but it’s also on the cabinet above the refrigerator.
The subconscious mind is a mysterious thing. I struggled with a design for this condo for two years, only to finally settle on something that was very familiar to me.
And while I didn’t watch the show “King of Queens” nearly as much, I can’t help but wonder if perhaps I was influenced by it as well.
Well, I must press on. I’m much too invested in this design to change directions now. And I wouldn’t want to, anyway! I love the way my little kitchen it turning out.
And even thought I’ve obviously been influenced by these t.v. shows, my kitchen will have its own unique look when it’s finished. And it certainly won’t have all of the clutter in Monica’s kitchen!! Could you even imagine trying to get stuff done in there?
And hopefully soon, I’ll actually get some paint on that back wall. 🙂
So has this ever happened to you? Or have you ever intentionally tried to replicate the look of a home you saw on a t.v. show or movie? I know that the kitchen (actually, the whole house) in the movie “Something’s Gotta Give” is often a favorite. Are there any others?
Addicted 2 Decorating is where I share my DIY and decorating journey as I remodel and decorate the 1948 fixer upper that my husband, Matt, and I bought in 2013. Matt has M.S. and is unable to do physical work, so I do the majority of the work on the house by myself. You can learn more about me here.
Kristi, this is hilarious! I know exactly what you mean. We are absorbing our environments every minute, and when something resonates with us, we simply store it for later use.
You mentioned the most important thing, though, that you will put your own signature to it and come up with a look that is truly YOURS. After all, there's nothing new under the sun!

Haha, that's funny. I don't think that has happened to me before.
Oh, Kristi! That is soooo funny. I do think this happens more often than we realize. So much that we see on TV goes in subconsciously. Whole fads pop out nationwide, you know?
And you are so wonderful to admit it. I often wonder if I have ever had an original idea. The only thing I remember from Monica's kitchen was that it was a HOT MESS!! I am sure yours will be much better neater–and much prettier.
So funny! But I like your kitchen better! I guess we need to remember there is nothing new under the sun!
Are you kidding? You are so creative! It happens all the time to me. 😀
My absolute favorite kitchen ever is on the TV show "Brothers and Sisters" on ABC. Seriously, I have to pull myself away from staring at it to pay attention to the very dramatic and enthralling family drama. I too have seen every FRIENDS episode multiple times. I quote them in every day conversation:)and it drives my hubs crazy. Your kitchen is looking oh so pretty!
Lissa, you piqued my curiosity, so went on the hunt for some photos. I found some, and wow! I can see why you love that kitchen! In fact, the whole house is gorgeous!

That is funny especially when u figured it out. Since u had the vision to begin with, I think u can still make it uniquely yours!
I like what you have done with Your kitchen–and it truly does look so much better than the TV one!

Right there with you, just painted my cabinets turquoise as well and wish I could get the wood counters- Just have to say they were ahead of their time (Friends that is).

It happens to me all the time, where I think I have the most original and fabulous idea, and there it is, somebody already snatched it out of my head. Well maybe not, they were just quicker in putting it out there than I was! But your kitchen is most definitely going to be one of a kind, because it will have your signature style! The end result will be beautiful!

I LOVE IT thought about doing it myself but simply because i have always ironically enough LOVED monicas kitchen 🙂
