Striped Bathroom Walls Progress (It’s Looking SO Good!)

I didn’t get the bathroom walls finished. That’s probably no surprise. 😀 My need for a nap won out on Saturday, and then the weather didn’t cooperate so the paint dried way slower than I had hoped, which meant that I couldn’t put painters tape over the freshly painted stripes as soon as I had planned. But I did make really good progress on them. And when I took all of the painters tape off of the walls last night, I can’t even tell you how happy it made me to see all of this glorious COLOR!

I mean, I just want to wrap myself up in this. I can’t wait to get the middle part of this wall done!

I think when it’s finished, this just might be my favorite painted wall design I’ve ever done.

Of course, it’ll look so much better once the wainscoting is painted all white and the vanity is painted a solid color. But you can use your imagination for now. And I can’t wait to show you how it looks with the rest of the studio! I sit at my desk and look around the whole room, and it just brings me so much happiness.

One thing that became obvious to me when I pulled all of the tape off the walls and stood back and looked at all of this amazing color is that I chose the wrong color for the vanity. The walls are too bold for such a soft green on the vanity. I think the vanity needs to be a bolder color for it to ground all of this color on top.

So I started looking at the stripes for a darker, bolder color that might work.

All of the greens are too light and too toned down except for this one.

I think that’s one of my main 10 paint colors, so I’ll still have quite a bit of it left over after the strips are painted. I’ll give it a try on the vanity and see how it looks.

Also, I’m still considering painting the ceiling in the room, and I keep envisioning a soft-ish pink. I don’t want one of the really bold, but maybe something like this…

That’s actually one of the colors in the striped design toned down 50%. I think I might give it a try.

But you can tell me what you think. Pink ceiling or white ceiling? I don’t want to do a pink ceiling if it’s going to take away from the stripes. Obviously, I want those to be the star of the show. But I’ve envisioned a pink ceiling for over a week now, and I really love the idea.

But as we all know, what we envision in our heads doesn’t always work out in the end. And I’m really not wanting to add to my “to do” list for this bathroom just on a whim. I want to wrap this thing up as soon as possible and move on. So give me your thoughts. White ceiling or pink ceiling?

  1. I’d recommend using the vanity for makeup before each paint change of the ceiling and vanity. That’s when you are most critical of the light how it’s reflected & what it does. If the current colors make It hard to discern detail and apply. Pink may make it easier or more difficult. Some influencers have painted confessional areas more blush to be more soft vs cold light. You prefer cold colored light. So the room light may feel weird even with a window, ceiling light and vanity light. I grew up in a house with a medium pink wallpapered ceiling & walls. It always felt like a darker room with not enough light. No one never really noticed it was pink, until we renovated the room. It still feels off/dark, but that’s because they use warm color bulbs with cold paint colors. I’m not a makeup person, but no one uses that bath for touchups still.

  2. Pink ceiling if the vanity is more neutral- a dark purple or white or grey. I think it would be too much to have a green vanity and pink ceiling

  3. For me, I’m not wild about that shade of pink on the ceiling. But you’re not doing this for me, are you 😀 My choice would be to go with the dusty rose that’s at the far right of your row of purple stripes. And for the vanity, I’d probably do the gray-purple that’s in the middle of the row of purple stripes so it kind of looked like a lighter version of the door. The stripes are AMAZING! You made the right call in the way you grouped them. It changes the whole look!

  4. I have a soft pink ceiling in my walk-in closet, and I absolutely love it. I can’t wait to see what you do. I’m loving the stripes, btw.

  5. I think a painted ceiling will be wonderful in there! I have a half bath with a flower wallpaper in different shades of blue and a dark blue ceiling. It does not take away from the wallpaper at all, but enhances it. So if I were you, I would def chose a colour from the walls, make it lighter (it doesn’t look lighter in your mock-up, though) and give it a try. I’m looking forward to seeing all come together – the new green for the vanity is a great choice!

  6. I like the vanity dark purple like the door and the ceiling white so the stripes can be the star. I like the way you bunched the colors. It is beautiful.

  7. Are you aware that if you paint the ceiling pink, when you look in the mirror, your face will look pinker than it really is? Just something to think about, especially if this will be the bathroom that overnight guests use. Will make makeup a chore to apply!!!!

  8. Even though I love color, I didn’t think I was going to like the stripes, but I do! But I agree about the vanity needing to be a stronger shade. Personally, I would stick with a white ceiling— I feel like, in the photo, the pink was the first thing that drew my eye rather than the stripes. Everything is looking so good!

  9. This is looking so much better than I even imagined!! Amazing! I would vote for a white ceiling only because I’d be concerned the pink ceiling would give a reddish cast to all the other colors and they’re so rich at the moment.

  10. I think the pink color looks amazing! It will be a joy to use the bathroom. As far as the vanity I love the dark green color your painting over lol.

  11. I am loving the stripes, the green for the vanity, but how about a soft blush for the ceiling rather than the depth of pink you have for it now? A soft soft blush would not be as glaring as a pure white and allow the beautiful stripes the focal point. jmo
Have a beautiful blessed week, Blessings to you all.

  12. The stripes are looking really pretty. If you do pink, I’d go about 50% lighter than your lightest pink on the walls.

  13. Nothing is going to take away from those beautiful stripes! I do love a pink ceiling! Well done! The stripes are gorgeous!

  14. I love the stripes! They look amazing! I vote pink and n the ceiling but lighten it up some. I also agree about the vanity. I don’t like the green. I really want to see the studio cabinet color but if not that the brighter green you pointed out.

  15. First off, the walls look amazing! I love the idea of a white ceiling. I could also see the pink working if it were even lighter than the 50% reduced version, but honestly, whatever you choose is going to look incredible. No doubt.

  16. Go for the pink ceiling! If you don’t like it…well, you know. 😉 You mentioned that you love the view from your desk. Do you work at your desk a lot? I find it interesting people who have a desk and work at it vs those who have a desk but seem to work just about anywhere else. I had envisioned you as an “anywhere else” type. 🙂

  17. Not surprising (since I love everything you do) I LOVE those stripes! I think I’m going to vote yes for the painted ceiling as well!

  18. You’re doing a great job with those stripes. I would never be able to get such crisp, clean lines and have them straight.
I agree with those who said the pink ceiling draws the eye away from the stripes. I notice that first when I see the photo with the pink on the ceiling. I tested with the beginning photos with the current ceiling in view – those photos I only see stripes.

  19. I was always so sorry that the striped workout room had to go away, I loved that space for the impact of color and your genius of coming up with how to do it. It makes me so happy to see stripes again, and they are gorgeous. I think a very soft pink for the ceiling, and I’m sure you’ll get the green just right on the vanity. It is all looking so good.
Cheers to you, Matt, and the Fur Babies!

  20. When I scroll thru the photos without reading context my first thought was the pink ceiling grabbed my attention before the striped walls. I’m going to vote against it.

The stripes are stunning and I’d hate for all the work to not be the first thing you notice.

Can’t wait to see what you choose!

  21. I vote for a white ceiling. Any other color up there will distract from the walls, which are absolutely gorgeous! I think the green you have identified is bold enough but not too saturated to bring the perfect color to accent the walls. Looking forward to your decision!

  22. I absolutely love the striped walls! I do agree with others that the pink would look great on the ceiling, but better if you lighten it. The ceiling doesn’t get light reflecting off it like walls do and I feel like paint always looks darker on the ceiling. I also think your light fixture would look amazing against a pale pink background. It would highlight the design more. I’m definitely for painting it pink. And as someone else mentioned, if you don’t like it, there is always a way to make it white. It’s just paint.

  23. I love the pink ceiling, but I’d go just a tad lighter still. Just a blush maybe 😁 It is turning out so beautiful.

  24. I still love a white ceilings and trim, no matter what you paint. You know you will paint the ceiling pink and if you don’t like it, you can always repaint someday. You do know that no matter what you decide, you will be redoing the room again. You are so creative, have so many ideas, and you love to change things up! You do you and that is why I watch you. Can’t wait to see what you do.

  25. I really like the color blocked walls. I think a pink ceiling, green vanity, and purple door compete with the wall treatment.

If it were my bathroom and I was set on a pink ceiling, it would be a barely there shade of pink. For cohesiveness, I think the ceiling, vanity, and door should be the same color and lean softer (vs bold) so as not to compete with the star of the show.

  26. Go with a pale blush or a just barely there pink. A color that reads very neutral. Otherwise, stick with the white.

  27. Big ol’ weirdo here! I’d paint the wainscot and crown with the pink to frame the stripes, do a pale lavender on the ceiling, and the dark green from the stripes on the vanity. Absolutely color drench the room. I’d also look for a flower shaped, colorful rug that mimics the shape of the mirror. Just for fun.

  28. The pink pushes it to a child’s playroom for me, and I love color, so the stripes and colorful vanity don’t faze me. But I do lean towards white or a super pale pink.

  29. I didn’t like the mock up you did with this design, but this actual reveal is so pretty! I almost want you to make the white stripe pink around the room! It is looking so good! I still vote for the eggplant color on the vanity. It is so rich and will pop against the walls. I’m afraid the new green color is still too bland….

  30. Pink ceiling. We lived in a 1950’s brick ranch in Chicago with pink and grey tiles—we painted the walls and ceiling a bubblegum pink and it was a selling point for when we sold the house—the pink was a sweet color and people (mostly women) commented on how flattering it was!

  31. Stripes are looking great! I like a pink ceiling, but feel like my eye is pulled there instead of the walls. What if you really toned it down so it’s more white with a touch of pink? You want the walls to be your shining star. Can’t wait to see what you decide on with the vanity!

  32. Purple vanity. Just look how good it looks in the picture with one of the doors closed. That purple pops.

I can’t decide about the ceiling. I first thought white, but that pink sure is pretty. Finish the walls and the vanity, THEN decide. It is a sweet bathroom.

  33. White ceiling. I even like the wide white stripe on the walls right now as it gives my eyes a place to rest. Liking the stripes so far but to me, it might be too much with the entire wall covered. However your house your way.

  34. While I understand your thoughts on the light pink ceiling, it seems to me that a white ceiling balances out the wainscoting, floor, and fixtures. Also, the crown might stick out more and look like a white stripe around the ceiling.

  35. I have to say the stripes are working out better than I thought; it doesn’t look as frenetic as I first thought. Maybe the white middle helps. Will you stagger the middle stripes or match the colors? I think the pink ceiling is ok but I’d go much paler than pictured….I’m talking a blush of color there.
As to the vanity, I think an egggplant color might ground it the way you want. It’s looking good though.

  36. I’d leave it white (but you’ll paint it a color!). If I were you I’d be lazy and not paint behind the mirror but I am sure you will be better than that! Looks good.

  37. White for the ceiling so that the stripes are the star. And I love the dark vanity as it’s currently showing on the left from the original paint job. That anchors the room and ties with the door. It also works well with the pink cabinets in the studio itself. Going pink on the ceiling and green on the vanity with the dark deep purple door is just a little bit over the top for my brain to handle.

  38. I still love that eggplant color of the door. Could you consider that darkest purple as the vanity color? I think the ceiling should be white, or the absolute lightest pink or color you decide, so the stripes are the star! I miss that squares wallpaper, but this looks wonderful too. PS) wondering how the outside kitty is doing?

  39. Definitely white. It lets all the other colors shine. This is really stunning Kristi. I’m so happy for you.

  40. Absolutely LOVE the
colorful striped walls! It IS joyful!
I’m in agreement with you over the vanity color needing to be darker or deeper to ground those glorious colors on the walls.
For the ceiling, why not keep high contrast between the vanity in a stronger clear color and a very faint pink ceiling? Your white trims and light would still stand out in relief from it, and it wouldn’t upstage the wall stripes?
The pink in your mock up brings the ceiling down – too intense…
So excited to see the finished product!

  41. My first thought when I saw the mock up with the pink ceiling, but before I finished reading the entire post was “Oh, that takes away from the stripes.”

  42. Oh Kristi! This is going to look so great! I think the pink would look good in light of the colorful designers that inspire you! It’s a really happy room!

  43. I’m not sold on the pink ceiling. I think you’ll see just what you want once the wall and the vanity are to your liking. 🙂

  44. If you are going to do a pink ceiling it needs to be much lighter so that there is just a hint of pink. You really don’t want to distract from those stripes, which I was not really expecting to like, but they are great! Your instincts are always spot on. If the ceiling has any saturation of pink at all I think it will throw a pink hue over the stripes and affect the color. Either a touch of pink or white. I actually think white will compliment the white trim. Good luck with this one.

  45. White ceiling. I think a pink ceiling is a distraction from the walls and the rest of the bathroom. The vanity is going to be a different shade of green. Adding a pink ceiling is too much in my humble opinion.
