Studio Office Area Cabinet Progress — Doors and Drawer Fronts Are Finished!

The doors and drawer fronts for the office area cabinets are finished! I got all of them done last night, but I didn’t have enough time to install all of them. I was disappointed that I ran out of time, but I was way too excited about this progress to wait to show you.

Isn’t that looking good so far?! Keep in mind that this is the end goal…

So in order to get from what I have now to that end goal, I have a lot more work to do. Obviously, I still need to build that bridge with the cubbies. But I also need to do a lot of work to the actual cabinet boxes to finish building those out, starting with filling this area between the cabinet and the wall.

And then I’ll add a similar extension to this side of the cabinet so that the two sides are the same width.

And then what I do on the outside of the right cabinet will need to be repeated on the inside areas so that the upper cabinets are symmetrical.

I’ll also need to add a filler strip to these areas between the lower drawers and the side cabinets.

And then there’s the bottom. I have no idea yet how I’m going to finish the bottom. Do I want a toekick like the cabinets on the mural wall? Do I want to finish these out without a toekick and more like a bookcase would be finished? I have no idea yet. But I’ll figure it out as I go along.

These cabinet doors and drawer fronts were so much easier and faster to do than the ones on the mural wall because I didn’t actual use gold leaf on these. I used this gold leaf tape instead.

I had already tested this out a while back on the other cabinets by adding a strip to one of the doors to see if it looked different from the actual gold leaf. I was shocked that it looked identical! Even in person, you can’t tell the difference.

So I used that exclusively on this section of cabinets, and to be quite honest, I’ll probably go back and redo the other doors and drawer fronts with this tape as well. This tape doesn’t develop dark spots like the gold leaf does. I couldn’t believe how fast I got all of the doors and drawer fronts done!

If I had used gold leaf, it would have taken me through the weekend to finish, and it wouldn’t have looked as good.

So I’m absolutely thrilled with how these turned out. However, I did forget to pre-drill the holes for the door pulls. I hate that, because I always like to do that before painting.

I sure wish I had had time to put the rest of the drawer fronts on, but that will be something we can look forward to later this week or next week.

So that’s the progress. You’ll have to use your imagination for now to “see” what the finished area will look like, but I’m well on my way to having a finished office area.

  1. I don’t like pink, but this is absolutelly gorgeous I like it a lot!! Love the tape, can you please let us know where to buy it? Thank you!

  2. Why arent you putting the left cabinet flush to the wall and save yourself all the filling?
They look great, and seeing them in place confirms my opinion the bridge will be perfect.

    1. I wondered this as well. Along with wondering why the lower cabinets aren’t flush against the side cabinets and/or why the white board attached doesn’t extend further.

      1. I could be wrong, but Kristi does love symmetry, so I would guess she is centering the cabinets around the window…?

  3. Kristi,
You have indeed accomplished a lot during the past three days. I’m so glad you took the time to show us with photos. Everything is looking so beautiful and at this pace it wont be long you will show us your completed studio. I’m looking forward to seeing it. You actually are a Master Pro at everything you do.

  4. It is so pretty. I am really excited to see the whole room absolutely finished. I’m sure you are too. How is it going on your addition? And workshop? And landscaping? Lots of projects.

Will you again post the link to the great pillow. I can’t seem to find it and I’m ready to order one to try it out. Is it still doing good for you?
Have a great rest of the week.

  5. Love love love this. And thank you for the tip about the gold leaf tape. I am planning gold accents in my living room and I wasn’t looking forward to doing the work. Now I am inspired.

  6. Wow, that looks fabulous, Kristi! It really ties the two walls together. Imho, I think it would look more substantial to have the same toekicks on these cabinets as the front wall cabinets. What do you think of the idea of covering the hanging lamp over your desk with the floral fabric? That would give three repetitions of the floral fabric and wallpaper to continue that motif. Onward and Upward!

  7. Kristi, thanks for the info about the gold tape. Sure was a time-saver and many of us will find it useful.

Has Matt visited the work in progress? If so, I’m sure he is as impressed as the rest of us. You are so near (relatively) to bringing the studio and bathroom to completion.

  8. This looks amazing! Could you do a write up about how you added the gold tape and where to buy it? Thanks!
