Walk-In Closet: The Wallpaper I Thought I Wanted vs. The Wallpaper I Actually Bought

Last week, I shared a few wallpapers that had caught my eye for potential use on the ceiling of my future walk-in closet. If you missed those wallpaper options, you can see them in this post: Wallpaper Options For My Closet Ceiling.

Of the ones that I considered, this Vinum Raspeys from Rebel Walls one was my favorite…

So I ordered a sample to be really certain that it looked that pretty in person before ordering enough for the closet ceiling. And in person, it’s absolutely gorgeous.

But I had two thoughts about it. First, I think it might be too dark to go on a ceiling. I knew it was dark when I ordered it, and I thought that I would probably be fine with having a dark wallpaper on the ceiling. But when it comes right down to it, I’m a white ceiling kind of person. I very specifically and intentionally paint my ceilings white because I like them to be bright. The hallway bathroom is the only room in our house that doesn’t have a white ceiling, and while I love the ceiling in that room, there’s no doubt that it makes the room feel smaller and darker. (This is obviously an older picture back when the room actually looked finished.)

I don’t mind that in a small guest bathroom, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I’d rather have a light, bright ceiling in my closet.

But quite honestly, the second thing that I thought about this wallpaper is that it’s really too pretty to be relegated to a closet. This wallpaper is spectacular, and I actually want to save it for a much more prominent place on our house. I think our future dining room would be the perfect place for it. That room will be right in the center of the kitchen, music room, and living room. (And yes, our future kitchen will be either the same or a very similar color.)

Just look at how beautiful it looks with those rooms and colors…

So I’m saving that one for the dining room. I’ll probably go ahead and purchase it very soon so that I don’t run the risk of them selling out or discontinuing that pattern.

But that means that I needed a new wallpaper for the closet ceiling, and I found the perfect one. This time, I headed to Photowall.com, which is where I purchased the mural that I used behind the bathtub in our bathroom…

They have a huge selection of murals, and you can customize the size, so I knew I was sure to find the perfect mural for my closet ceiling. I specifically searched for “watercolor floral”, which gave me lots of results. And then I just looked for one that had the right colors.

And after considering several like this one called Hopeful Spring

I chose this one because it has more orange in it than the others. And since orange will be a prominent color in the bedroom, carrying that into the closet just made sense to me.

But I also get my touches of pink like I wanted. Once the mural is cropped to fit the ceiling in my closet, it’ll look more like this…

The wallpapered ceiling will only be in the closet portion of the room, and not in the laundry area of the room. I have an idea for how I’m going to separate the two areas to make them feel more like two separate spaces, but I’ll share more on that later.

  1. Hi Kristi:
I like your choice for the paper of the closet ceiling. It goes well with your colors in the rest of the house and it looks like the right saturation of color, especially with the color scheme of the bedroom. I look forward to seeing your process of both the bedroom and closet / laundry room. You have done a tremendous job in 2024 and should be proud. Kudos!!

  2. I liked the Hopeful Spring best but your choice is similar in that it has a lot of white space in it. I think you need that if you wallpaper a ceiling with a pattern.

  3. Beautiful wallpaper. Question though. Since, by my eye, it has a “direction”, flower stems and blooms growing up, in what direction will you apply it? Will it be upside down standing in the closet, or the bedroom door?

  4. Im glad you didn’t go with the dark. I think you would be sorry. It is beautiful wallpaper and will look good in the dining area. I love what you picked for the ceiling. It is light, yet bright. It has a POP to it.

    Happy decorating.

  5. Vinum Raspeys will be stunning in your dining room! I prefer the murals that are more like looking into the center of a bouquet and not directional but I understand your wanting a mural either way orange in it. I’ve been wondering how the eating plan without sugar has been going. Heading into the holidays many of us readers may need a little motivational pep talk about avoiding sugar.

  6. Ooh, I love that Hopeful Spring mural. I might have to use that for our guest bedroom. So pretty! I see why you chose the one you did though. The colors are perfect for your suite! Spring Bouquet would be so pretty almost as a medallion around a pretty chandelier. 🙂

  7. I was wondering what type of ceiling lights you are planning on installing so that it doesn’t interfere with the beautiful mural? Is the wallpaper self adhesive or will you have to use wall size and then paste for the wallpaper? Looking forward to seeing your final results. 🙂

    1. I plan on having just one ceiling light (chandelier or pendant light) in the center of the closet area, with other lights attached to the closets at the top. There will be separate lights in the laundry area.

  8. I love it! And I love the darker wallpaper being earmarked for your dining room. It absolutely needs a prominent spot in your home.

  9. This makes me want to put wallpaper on the ceiling of my home office! What an exciting idea! I have recently moved my home office into the former guest room and am in the midst of decorating. I wonder, though if it would feel like something is about to fall on my head the whole time I am in here. It would be so pretty, but I wonder if it would end up bothering me.
