(Almost) All Of My Stuff Under One Roof

It has been a very busy week-and-a-half! Since I didn’t have internet for most of that time, I decided to focus my attention on getting stuff done that has needed to be done for quite some time.

Primarily, getting my storage units cleared out. As I shared with you back in May 2012, I wasn’t really one of those people who could actually pare down all of my possessions to fit into 834 square feet (i.e., our condo). Nope. I had stuff spilling out all over the place, and by the time we moved into the house, I had accumulated three-and-a-half storage units (two that we were renting, and one-and-a-half that were at my mom’s house) filled with stuff.

This was the worst one — a 10′ x 20′ unit that I’ve been renting for years, stuffed from side to side, back to front.

So I borrowed my sister’s big ‘ole diesel truck for the week while she was out of town, and my mom and I got busy clearing out these storage units.

There was so much stuff!! I think we made three or four trips to Goodwill, three trips to the landfill, a couple of trips to my mom’s house with stuff that she wanted to keep, and many trips to my house.

My garage was packed full of stuff by the time we were done (it basically looked like that storage building, with perhaps just a tad more organization), but it felt so good to get those storage units cleared out!! And more importantly, to know that I’ll be saving that money (which equaled about half of our mortgage on the house) each month.

So that’s what I’ve been up to during my internet hiatus. 🙂 Yesterday I started bringing in some of the furniture from the garage, and I’ll share with y’all (hopefully tomorrow) what I decided to keep, and how I’ll be using it. So far, everything that I’m keeping needs a good makeover, so those will be some fun projects that I’ll be working on in the future.

Sorry for the lack of new photos today. I keep forgetting to bring my camera from the condo (we still have a few boxes of stuff over there that I need to move), but I’ll get back in the swing of things soon. I mainly just wanted to let you know that I’m back, and I’ve missed you terribly. 🙂 And things are finally starting to get back to normal around here.

  1. I just got my internet back yesterday after 3 weeks. I actually thought I could live w/o it for 6 months while our house is being built. Ha! I can’t even work on much as all my craft room stuff is in boxes. I miss my craft room sooooo much. Can’t wait to see what you’re up to!

  2. LOL. Whatever normal is. Missed your busyness. I hope you have heat now, and that you are enjoying living in the middle of a project.

  3. So excited for you to get that weight off your shoulders. Just think…soon you will be fully ready to focus on your baby and truly make it all yours.

Keep pushing through darling…looking forward to many pictures and amazing show’s of talent

  4. Boy does Ms. SpoolTeacher know about too much stuff. When her mother passed, she had two or three storage units to accommodate her 20 x 20 foot apartment until she bought her “big” house (1975 s/f). Then she went on to fill that space with even more thinking she would refurbish furnishings and sell at local malls. When she moved out of state it took a 55 foot truck trailer and that was after selling/giving lots of her wonderful stuff. Now she’s packed again. But it’s all part of the “fun” of trying to be a business person, eh?

  5. You were missed! Just looking at the photo above is exciting – all the possibilities! That red chair would look amazing in your new master bedroom in linen or blue with the print fabric as a pillow 🙂

  6. Glad you’re back! Your posts are the ones I skim for when I go through my “following blogs” email. =] And your “loads of stuff” makes me feel better about the area in my attic full of bins of… I don’t know what. Honestly, I probably won’t get around to those bins for quite some time, but at least technically they are out of my way, I don’t pay for the storage and “out of sight, out of mind”.

  7. The cost of storage is outrageous, glad thats over for you. I am sure you will have much better things to spend your money on.
Cheers from a very warm Brisbane.

  8. My husband and our son just cleaned out a storage unit we had for 6 years! I’m embarrassed we kept it so long, but there was always a strong chance we’d be moving out of state. I can so identify with the relief you felt getting the stuff out, sorted, and assigned to different people & places. Plus this week we got our “security deposit” (1st month’s rent) back…Hooray!
Looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful ideas and projects….I’ve missed you.

  9. Hi Kristi! Great to see you again! I’ve been wondering how things were going. Wow, that’s a lot of storage spaces! Sounds like my garage LOL! I know that there are some great projects in there waiting to be done as well as stuff I can donate. Never a fun job to clean it out though . Hope all is going well and that you’ll be able to post more often soon! Take care. Hugs, Leena

  10. Wow! What a project! Clearing out isn’t always the most glamorous type of project, but it sure feels great when it’s finished, right?! I’m so excited to see all of the projects you have lined up. Hope you’re having a wonderful week, Kristi!

  11. Boy, are we glad you are back! Withdrawl was ugly, but we got our ‘fix’ today with your post. Now we can all get back to normal. Yeah!

  12. So glad to have you back! Sorting and moving is one of the worst jobs in the world. You’ve accomplished a lot in a short time. congrats! $$ saved in one place is well used elsewhere. Go Kristi!

  13. Oh look, do those chairs match mine? And I sure can use the black lighting fixture!!

It’s a good thing you live miles away (I could’ve sent my nephew) and that I just had back surgery. What a relief it must be to accomplish such a huge undertaking and start to save money. Always look forward to your amazing ideas.
    Stay healthy.

    Bernie

  14. Oh my goodness. I totally envy you. I have 2 storage units (used to own gift shops) that I’ve had for 20 years! I don’t have time to go through them and I just keep paying and paying and paying. In fact, I go so seldom that I often forget my gate code and have to ask them to let me in from the office! If I had all that money, I’d be rich! You’ve done what I long to do. Way to go!
