I recently had the pleasure of preparing a Virtual Room (re)Design for a young woman named Bailey. Her bedroom is a great “canvas” with tremendous potential.
She has an entire wall of built-ins that include bookshelves, drawers, and a desk area. And as you can see in this picture, there was a special need that had to be addressed–a new home for Phoebe the chinchilla.
The main window needed to be addressed. It was calling for some fabric!!
And then there was the matter of her headboard. It’s lovely, but it just didn’t feel weighty enough to stand opposite that huge bookcase wall.
The bedside table, while beautiful, was looking a bit puny.
And of course, the overall issue of style needed to be addressed. Based on the inspiration pictures that Bailey sent me, I could tell immediately that she loved color–bold, bright, saturated color. So I suggested color…lots of it. But in order to “tame” the color, I added lots of large, white elements for a clean, modern look that’s perfect for a young lady.
Here’s a look at the (re)Design I did for Bailey’s room. To see the full-size boards, click here.

I love designing rooms for people who love color and are willing to be a bit daring!! Life’s too short to live in dull rooms. 🙂

Addicted 2 Decorating is where I share my DIY and decorating journey as I remodel and decorate the 1948 fixer upper that my husband, Matt, and I bought in 2013. Matt has M.S. and is unable to do physical work, so I do the majority of the work on the house by myself. You can learn more about me here.

August 3, 2010 at 5:32 pmThose built-ins are a great way to save space in smaller rooms or apartments and are still a great way to make a room looking really nice AND organized.
The cost of such built-ins are mostly hardly higher than any other furniture would be and with a few do-it-yourself skills they actually can even save a lot of money furnishing a room.
I also like the choice of colors. The smaller the room, the brighter the colors should be of the furnishing and also the walls. Accents and Decor in different colors will add that special touch so the room won't look dull. You really did a great job designing this room for Bailey.
