Closet/Laundry Room Changes (Design Change, Final Wallpaper Purchase, and a New Design Addition)
During my end-of-the-year break, I made some changes to my plan for my future closet/laundry room area of our bedroom suite. I’ve already shared part of those changes with you in a previous post (which you can see here) where I shared that I made a last minute switch and had the hookups for the washer and dryer put on opposite walls on either side of the window.
That change came after I spent a couple of hours trying to work out the floor plan and organizational details of that room on the free SmartDraw floor planner that I’ve come to love and use quite frequently. After reworking the floor plan for that room and trying to maximize the storage area of the closet portion of the room, while also keeping in mind my incessant need for symmetry (that’s just who I am, and it’s futile to fight against it), this is the final floor plan I came up with.

The washer and dryer hookups are already in place, so there’s no turning back now. 🙂
And then as I was planning how I wanted the closet area to look and to be organized, which included at least two hours of me scrolling through pictures of walk-in closets on Instagram, Pinterest, and Houzz, I made a really big change to my plans. If you’ll remember, the last time I shared my plans with you, I was convinced that I’d be putting wallpaper on the ceiling. I had chosen this wallpaper for that purpose.
I even purchased the wallpaper…or so I thought. For some reason, my purchase didn’t go through, and in hindsight, I’m so glad it didn’t! Because after giving it a lot of thought, I reworked my plan and decided to forgo the wallpaper on the ceiling and do something else instead. And I think the new plan is much better suited to my taste.
My new plan (and this one is pretty much carved in stone, so there’s no turning back) is to turn this section of closet space into an area that has built-in drawers in the lower section that will come up to about 34 inches high. Above that will be a countertop, and then an open area with wallpaper, a pretty mirror, and probably some pretty sconces.
So with that new plan, I needed new wallpaper. After searching and searching, I finally found the perfect wallpaper. It’s the Taylor wallpaper from Jupiter10. I ordered this wallpaper before Christmas (actually, on December 13th), and it just arrived yesterday. I was aware that it would take that long to get it because their website states that wallpaper order take 21 days to ship, plus I ordered it before the holidays, which I’m sure delayed it a bit more. But it was worth the wait! Check out this beauty!
I mean, if this isn’t me then I don’t know what is. I wish y’all could see it in person because pictures just don’t do it justice.
In fact, I ordered it without even ordering a sample first, which made me a bit nervous. I knew it was a bit of a gamble, so I was ecstatic when I unrolled it yesterday and saw that it surpassed my expectations.
The colors are gorgeous, the pattern is fun, and of course, there are flowers. Plenty of flowers. I think it’ll be so perfect in that space in the closet.
I specifically chose a wallpaper with a really dark background because when I decided to incorporate a mirror into the plan, I already knew the exact mirror I wanted to buy. It’s one that I’ve wanted for years now, but I never could find a place for it. Well, this closet is the perfect place, and it’s perfect for this dark wallpaper!
The mirror I’m talking about is the Atoll mirror from Ballard Designs (affiliate link). Y’all, I have wanted this mirror for so long, and I’m so excited to finally have a place for it.
And just look at how gorgeous it is against that dark wallpaper!
Is it crazy that I’m even more excited about this closet than I am about our new bedroom? 😀
I had mentioned previously that I wanted to paint the cabinets in the closet pink, but since orange will be so prominent in our bedroom, I’m thinking that I’ll choose a paint color that coordinates with something in this portion of the wallpaper instead.
I just got the wallpaper yesterday (ordered on December 13th, and it arrived January 20th, so it took over a month to get here), so I haven’t even been to the store to look at paint colors yet. But I think something in that orange/coral family will work perfectly with the whole space and coordinate better with the bedroom than pink would. And since the closet won’t have a door on it, I do need to think about the two areas coordinating with each other.
So these are the final decisions. No turning back now, and now that I’ve seen this wallpaper in person, there’s no way I’d want to turn back anyway. This wallpaper almost looks like it was made just for me.
Beautiful! I love this plan more than the last!
Beautiful! I’m so happy for you! I love the central niche, I built one for myself in my condo and I may do another in our new house when I get time and funds to do it!
That wallpaper should be named Kristi. Ditto the mirror!
Gorgeous mirror! Gorgeous wallpaper! I’m excited for you.
I love the mirror and think it looks striking against the dark floral wallpaper. Do you have plans for a full length mirror in your closet? I definitely had to have one in my closet.
I don’t have room for one in the closet, but I’ll be putting one in the vestibule. (I’m trying out that label for the former hallway for now. 😀 )
It’s gorgeous! I can’t wait to see the final product. Any gold going on the mirror??? I love the new layout for the closet/laundry room. It is giving me ideas for our butler’s pantry/laundry room/chaos chamber.
Cheers!
I won’t be adding any to the mirror, but there will be gold! There will always be gold! 😀
That was the first thought I had too, Lori Ann…just a subtle gold leaf edge on this mirror, nothing too crazy, would look so beautiful!! I think it would make the interesting shape of the mirror pop even more!
Love the new wallpaper/mirror/niche design! I’m a little confused about the new room layout, is the laundry area only deep enough on each side for the appliances? Or are you still having storage next to the washer/dryer on the laundry area side of the room?
It’s only wide enough for the appliances plus a few inches on each side for trim. There will be storage above each appliance. I’m still working out the details. But the “entrance” into the laundry area has been widened. Those cabinets separating the two areas will only extend from the side walls to the fronts of the appliances.
Will the island be on wheels? Just curious how you would get a washer and dryer in and out of the room.
Yes, it will.
I too have wanted that mirror for a few years bt have no place to put it so I’m glad that you have found a place. I love the paper as well and can’t wait to see the closet come together. Your washer/dryer color looks like it will also be great with the paper.
I love it all !
Oh my word, that wallpaper (and mirror!) is STUNNING. I can’t wait to see it up!
The wallpaper is really gorgeous! Beautiful mirror too. Nicely done.
Great design choice for you! I actually like how you don’t always follow a direct path…much more realistic for a person such as I, who needs to walk away from an ongoing project and rest my thoughts or activity to do a much better finishing job than I would have if I just kept at it. It may take a while, but it does get finished!
Love the wall paper, definitely you and that mirror is gorgeous, so very feminine. Also think your idea of lower drawers is a good idea. If you aren’t using a dresser for clothes in your bedroom, maybe lower drawers on the opposite side of closet.
Can’t wait to see this project when it’s completed.
And don’t forget the five-foot island in the closet that will be all drawers! I’ll have plenty of space (and probably extra) for everything I need to store. We will have a dresser in the bedroom, but that will be exclusively Matt’s. Since Matt only ever wears super comfy cotton clothing, and he only has two pairs of shoes (he only wears shoes when he leaves the house, and they have to be super comfy because of his MS which makes his feet very sensitive) he really doesn’t need any hanging space or shelving space, so the closet will be all mine.
Thank you for the reminder about the island and explanation about what Matt’s needs are
Love the wallpaper and the mirror. Especially the mirror! You’re more excited about the closet because of little sparks of genius like this. Something will come along in the bedroom and you’ll be just excited about that room as well. But first things first!
I’m amazed at how things just fall into place for you. I know you do a lot of searching, but like the mirror you’ve been wanting you now have a perfect place for it that you never imagined being where you will be putting it. Your bed room will click into the right place too when it’s time.
That wallpaper is SO YOU! Love it! I saw that mirror a while back and thought instantly that it was designed for you. I would suggest a soft Coral paint color. I would prefer to have a full mirror somewhere in the room where I dress, but I guess with no doors, that would take space from storage. I have a full view mirror on the inside of the door to our walk in closet. I would have preferred it in the bathroom, but my better half didn’t like that in our last house, so the door was the best alternative for me.
Could you explain your washing process because I’m confused as to the layout without any counterspace. Do you have any designated place for dirty clothes before they go in the washer? What about the just-washed clothes? Do you throw them across to the dryer (I don’t remember what you said the spacing was)? Then what about after drying? Do you fold right away as they come out of the dryer? I have a small laundry room and looking for ideas.
I’ll have a place for dirty clothes somewhere. I’m still working out the details. And there won’t be any throwing of clothes necessary. 🙂 I’ll take them out of the washer, turn around, and put them in the dryer. Pretty simple. This setup will force me to fold clothes and put them away immediately, which is a good thing. I have a five-foot island in the closet where I can fold clothes, and I’ll be standing right in the closet, where everything except bath towels and kitchen towels will be stored. It should be very efficient and convenient.
Thank you! Now that I think about it, the window is probably not that wide and moving clothes from the washer to the dryer will be easy! Your room is going to be so functional and so gorgeous! Love that wallpaper so much!
Wow! That wallpaper! That mirror! No wonder you’re excited! It’s always exciting to see what’s happening at your place. A lot of us live vicariously through you. Tyfs
I have this very mirror and adore it. We made over our powder room last summer and used the mirror over a navy vanity with white marble top, and Thibaut paper (lots of blues in the paper) Wish I could attach a photo here, but it’s probably my fave room of the house 😂. I’m sure you’ll love that mirror every time you pass by.
The wallpaper is you. So glad your other purchase didn’t go through because what would you have done with that wallpaper? I know, you would have thought of something. I agree that the room should at least be in the same color family. You have pink enough in your studio if you are missing pink.
Stay warm.
It does look like it was made for you!! It’s beautiful! I can’t believe it’s been so long since you bought the house!! I loved the condo too! Can’t wait to see it done!
I’m following closely! As soon as my son moves to his new bedroom downstairs, his current bedroom becomes my walk-in closet! So excited! But it will take some time to get clean and in shape! So, I’m super curious about your closet project! Looking very good indeed!
