Make It Happen Monday…Starting Next Week

Okay, so here’s the deal.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking this week…lots of evaluating, planning, thinking, dreaming, etc. I’m sure that’s come across in my posts this week.

On Tuesday I shared with you about my biggest and most irritating personality flaw…the fact that I’m a starter and not a finisher. That is THE reason that not one single room in my home is finished. See that tab up there on my menu that says “Rooms I Designed”? You will not see one single room of my own listed…because none of them are finished!!!

Then yesterday I shared my top ten reasons that I’m finished with condo living. I’m done. I’ve over it. I want a house!

But here’s the deal. Even if Matt and I had the downpayment for a house saved up, and found a house that we loved today, there’s simply no way we could put the condo on the market with all of these unfinished projects! So something has to give here. And that “something” would be ME. If I really want home ownership badly enough (again), then I should be motivated enough to get myself in gear and make it happen.

I should be motivated enough to make these projects happen…to get them finished already.

I should be motivated enough to be fully prepared for the next “phase”…home ownership (or rather, HOUSE ownership, since I do currently own my home…it’s just that my home is a condo rather than a house).

From the comments (thank you for each and every one of them, by the way!!!) I’ve realized that I’m not alone in needing to get projects done. I’m far from alone!!

So I’ve decided to start something new here. It’s called…

Make It Happen Monday
Every Monday, I’m going to commit to finishing one project in my condo, e.g., painting the trim in my kitchen. And then the following week, I’ll report on the completed project, and then commit to another project to be completed the following Monday…and on, and on.

But here’s the deal…

I want you to join me!!!

I jokingly mentioned a “support group” for people like me. Well, now I’m not joking. I’m actually forming a support and encouragement group, where we’ll all help and motivate each other to complete our lingering projects.

It won’t be a link party, because non-bloggers wouldn’t be able to join in. It’ll just be a post where we can all check in, report progress, and commit to finishing projects that have been hanging over our heads for a while now. If you have a blog and want to write about the project, and then leave a link on Mondays, that’s great. But if you’re not a blogger, I still want you to feel free to join in. No link necessary.

Are you in? I’m excited! Perhaps accountability is just what I need to get it done.

  1. Wow! I literally just posted last night about my astonishment that it was June already, and my realisation that I hadn’t completed most fo the stuff on my ‘to do’ list for 2012.
Hopefully this will encourage me to get some work done!

  2. Sounds like fun! I too, have problems finishing the things projects I’ve started. The trim in my living room has been 1/2 way done since November. I’m always joking with my husband that I need a support group so I have someone to be accountable too. Thank you!

  3. I love this! We are getting ready to start an addition on our house but there are literally a ton of little projects and jobs around the house that need to get done and more will be added as we get farther into the building process. Monday is a great night for me too. most of the school year my hubs is leadering the Boy Scouts that night so i have a few hours uninterupted to myself. I used to have a blogger page but its fallen so far by the wayside, I am getting into tumblr though.

  4. I’m in … I’m in … I’m in …

Seriously. 100% in! I have Craigslist furniture sitting in my family room for a year now. I have a half finished master since January. This will be the kick in the butt I need to move things forward!

    🙂

  5. I’m the same way – 100% starter, about 80% finisher. But I’ll resolve to making it a 100/100 along with this great group! Looking forward to seeing everyone’s progress (and being even more motivated by you guys!) each week! Great idea, Kristi!

  6. This sounds awesome! Just what I need to kick start myself into full gear (hopefully). Mondays sound like great days for this with school out of session. Can’t wait to see what everyone decides to accomplish. I need to go through my list & pick something myself… quite a long list.

  7. Love this idea! It’s the deadlines that really make us get our butts in gear! Before you know it, that condo will know who’s boss when you whip it into shape! Here’s to finishing what we start (and I’ve got losts of those too) and getting that house!

  8. I like it. I’m in. And I DID just cross “hang curtains” off my list last Saturday (10 months after moving in). Although I haven’t put my tools away. *sigh*

    1. Ten months is fast compared to how I work. LOL. And I just now put tools away that have been sitting inside my front door for about eight months now. Yep…eight months.

      1. Believe me, we have some big projects on the horizon (bathroom x 2, kitchen, new deck, and new windows as time and $$$ allow) so getting the small stuff finished first is a must! Can’t wait to hear what you tackled first.

  9. I am KNEE DEEP in half ripped off gold wallpaper in my dining room this weekend. I’m usually a finisher but man, oh, man this house is FULL of projects. We are under the gun for painting since carpet is on order so we’re working furiously. I should have something to share Monday! 🙂

    1. Fantastic! If you have a project finished on Monday, you’ll be a week ahead of me. 🙂 Sadly, I won’t be able to work on anything this weekend, but I’m trying to narrow down the project I want to tackle next week!

  10. Woo Hoo! Let’s get it started…..I mean finished! LOL! I’ve quite a bit of things to do as well!

So we start this weekend and report our projects on Monday?

    1. Yes…FINISHED is the key word here!! 😀

You’re certainly welcome to tackle a project this weekend and report on it this Monday. I personally won’t have time. My idea is that we would all have one week per project just to give us enough time…and less room for excuses…LOL. So I’ll be thinking of what project I want to tackle first, and share it on Monday, the a week from Monday I’ll have it done.

  11. That is such an awesome idea!! I’m in! One of my main problems is that I tend to get way too many projects going at once….can you say ADD!!?!! LOL So I’m always trying to finish many projects. I also have intended on starting a blog for sometime to show my projects. This is just what I needed. Now if I can just decide on a name for my blog. LOL

  12. I am so in! I get so sidetracked and will buy paint and leave it sitting or build in bunks and never trim them or finish the room. And it constantly irritates me. I remember a real estate seminar years ago when I was selling houses and the speaker said that most stress is caused by the minor irritations that take less than an hour to fix in our lives. I don’t know if he actually had proof or made it up, but it makes so much sense. Here’s to Monday!

  13. I want to be in, too! Got a bathroom project that’s languishing, and a big long list for the summer. Recently finished a project all in one weekend, and it felt awesome. Want me some more of that, and a support group would help a lot.

  14. First, thank you for including those of us without a blog. I often feel like we don’t count or matter to some bloggers. You rock!

Second, I love that I am not the only one who is a procrastinator and “un-finisher”! Makes me feel less alone. It embarrasses me that I often leave a project nearly finished and it stays that way for years. I can ignore it or not even pay attention to it until I have visitors. Anyway, I think this is fantastic and I will join in (that was hard to say :)!

Let’s support one another! Thank you, Kristi, for having the guts to put it out there and helping the rest of us along the way! Woo hoo! Let’s get this party started!

  15. I am totally , completely IN! I have a house full of half finished projects. It seems that I lose interest or motivation once I get about half to three quarters of the way done on a project. Not one room is finished, so help me this will finally get my rear in gear! Thanks for coming up with this idea, clearly there are a lot of us “starters, not finishers” out there!

  16. Great idea Kristi — from your previous post comments there seems to be so many of us creative types out there that have a ton of unfinished projects. I’m also real bad at regularly posting, so it would be good for me to regularly post a status report every Monday — I’ll also link to anyone else, like you, that I know is doing this challenge.

  17. I have never had so many uncompleted/not even started projects in all my life.. a lot of “life events” both the sad and glad this past couple of years has taken a toll. and I guess being idea people/creative/ visionary does not always mean TASK…. then there are those with no ideas but can get a job done if told what to do. we need to “hire” them!

  18. Glad to know I’m not the only person in the world to have at least 100 projects started but not finished! It’s really sad- the section on my blog which is called “projects” has one lousy DIY in it – even though I know DIY posts are always popular. I definitely need some serious help. Love to dream it, not so much to finish it 🙂
