My Recliner Is Here! (Plus, A Floor Lamp Review)

The recliner that I ordered for the bedroom arrived yesterday. It’s about three weeks later than the estimated delivery date, but the wait was totally worth it. I’ve been so nervous about this recliner because I chose the fabric from a pretty small swatch. My main concern was that it was going to be too blue, but it turned out to be perfect. Everything about it is perfect — the size, the color, the comfort.

This is the Jude recliner from Interior Define (affiliate link). I had it upholstered in their performance velvet in the color French with the standard down fill for the cushion. And just a note. If you’ve been considering anything from Interior Define, they’re having a big sale right now. It’s a bigger discount than it was when I purchased mine back in August. But do keep in mind that they’re built and upholstered after you order, so it takes a while to get the order. I think the wait is so worth it, though. The quality is great.

This is the second piece I’ve ordered from Interior Define, and they’re both amazing. I chose performance velvet because the fabric holds up very well against cat claws. We’ve had our living room sofa for 3.5 years now. It’s the James 2-seat sofa (affiliate link) upholstered in performance velvet in the Galaxy color. Felicity has tried and tried to scratch on that sofa, and it has held up perfectly. She wasn’t able to do a single bit of damage to the fabric, so she finally gave up. So I know she won’t be able to destroy this one, either.

Even though I had measured the area about ten times and even taped off the dimensions of the chair with painters tape, I was also holding my breath until I got the chair in its spot so that I could see with my own eyes that it fit into the corner. It’s hard to tell in pictures, but the recliner is pretty large. They have a smaller one, but I was certain that I had room for the bigger one.

And there’s also plenty of room for it to recline.

It has two reclining positions, but I don’t see myself ever reclining fully while sitting here. I just want to be able to put my feet up while I’m reading. So in this position, there’s plenty of room with space left over.

As soon as the recliner arrived yesterday afternoon, I got online and started looking for a floor lamp that would work in the available space. After looking at about 50 different options on several websites, I finally decided to go with this one from Amazon (affiliate link). The bonus with this one is that it was available with overnight delivery, so it was on our front porch when I woke up this morning.

I decided on this one because I liked the arch, the smaller shade, and the color of the shade. I didn’t want a stark white shade. But I wasn’t quite sure what I’d get with a floor lamp that’s under $50. Overall, I’m quite happy with it, but I was a bit taken aback to find that I had to actually put the lamp shade together. I expected to have to assemble the lamp, but I don’t think I’ve ever bought a light that needed assembly on the actual lampshade. It has these clips that clip onto the rings, and while it worked pretty well, you can see these slight puckers on a couple of places around the rings (bottom arrow) and there’s this one place that looks like a dent (top arrow). It’s not actually a dent. It’s just that when the fabric clips into the rings like this, it’s impossible to pull it taut enough to get it perfectly flat.

Also, if you’ve ever purchased gold spray paint, you know that there are two kinds of gold finish. The first (and the preferred one) is the type that actually looks metallic. Those spray paints are harder to find and are usually more expensive. The second is the one that, up close, doesn’t look like an actual smooth, metallic finish. Instead, it looks more like a gold glittery finish that mimics a true gold/brass finish. The second one is the finish that’s on this light.

But at a distance of even just a few feet, you don’t really notice that gold glittery finish. It looks nice, and I’m actually quite pleased with it, especially for the price. I also liked that this one had the switch towards the top of the light, and it’s also dimmable. So many floor lamps today have the on/off button that’s attached to the cord and sits on the floor. I hate those. So this one will work out just fine. I really wish I could figure out how to get rid of that one area on the lampshade that looks like a dent, though. I can’t turn the shade to hide it because then the seam will show. I think I just need to work with it a little more and maybe I can get that area smoothed out better.

Anyway, now that the recliner is here, and I can see that I love everything about it, I’m feeling really motivated to get everything else done. I made a decision about this wall and how I want to handle the breaker box and TV, so stay tuned for that. But first things first. I want to get my curtains finished and get them hung, and I’m really hoping I can finish those up this weekend.

  1. Ooo, the recliner is perfection! I too was worried what color it would turn out to be and bracing myself for your disappointment but man, it matches so ebautifully. Congratulations on a real win in getting your bedroom done!

  2. The chair looks great! I like that the color is a bit lighter than the grass cloth. I would like a small round table next to the chair to set a cup of tea on. I looked at the dimensions of the lamps you are considering. The Target lamps are a bit shorter than the others. The tangerine lamp you love is 29.5″ high and the Oldbury Vase lamp at 30.25″ high is just .75″ higher. The finial appears to be taller than most. I would take a visual inch off the lamp height for that. When you stand across the room you will see the height of the lampshade and not so much the height of the finial making the lamp appear a bit shorter. Like others said, you could use a shorter harp but I wouldn’t use one that lowered the lampshade below the base of the lamp. All of the lamps you are considering are very nice.

  3. Our new lamps came with shades that needed assembling- it must be the new thing. They were from Wayfair, so I guess lots of places are doing that. Maybe it’s easier to ship unassembled?
Your recliner and lamp are gorgeous! This will give you the boost to keep going- you are amazing, don’t forget it!

    1. I got lamps from Amazon, with shades that I had to assemble just like Kristi’s and they also have the dents. The lamps are over a year old now, and the dents are still there. I’ve tried everything I can think of to no avail.

  4. What if you switched the lamp to the other side of recliner. Would that hide the dent.
Love the perfect color and fit of the chair.

    1. I was going to suggest that too but not because of the “dent” but because it would hide the breaker box. Hiding the dent and the box gives Kristi a “twofer”.
I am making a gut assumption that Kristi is right-handed. Usually, when reading, you hold books/Kindles in the right hand, if dominant. I do. Or maybe I’m weird! Having the lamp on the left and a small end table on the left provides room for drinks and snacks. And hides the box!
The chair is the closest fit, color-wise, I believe you could find without having the wallpaper and cloth in your hands at the same time!
I think if I had the corner problem for hiding the box, I would hang a large quilted throw in appropriate colors on the wall over the box cover.

  5. Your chair looks and sounds like it is going to be so comfortable. I am so happy that it is your perfect color.
I was thinking of your mirror and wondering if you have considered playing around with your past console table under it. You had in the foyer with the turned legs quite a while ago. Then, adding a chair by the mirror corner.
The bench is great too, I was just thinking out loud.

  6. I was wondering why you need to build a new bed? Every room you have had, you build a new bed. Can’t you just use the one you currently have, just change the fabric on the headboard. It would save you money and time.

  7. Oh, because of you I almost ordered a chair from Interior Define. I love to be able and pick the color and style and the samples I got from them were beautiful fabric. I just couldn’t wait until next year…February or March! And I too bought two lamps recently, and when I saw the box I wondered if the shades were coming later. New to me also, the shades were well packaged, and mine were less fabric, more sturdy and look fine…but what a surprise! Definitely makes shipping better for all these companys, and less damage in the long run. Your chair is wonderful…maybe next time when I don’t have such a time crunch!

  8. We are all breathing a sigh of relief now that you have your new perfect recliner. Take time out of your busy day to let Calgon Take You Away.😀

  9. Yep, the chair is perfect. The lamp is lovely as well. The only thing I would change is to lower the shade of the lamp so that when I was sitting in the chair, the bottom of the shade would be even with my eyes. As to the dents in the shade, do you think a bit of steam on the fabric might shrink it enough to tighten it up? For the bed, what will you do with the bed you were using in the former master bedroom, now the master closet?

  10. Love the chair. It makes the room look almost finished. I also like the lamp. Using the 3 foot rule, it is perfect. That is was sewers do…stand back 3 feet from the quilt and it is great looking.

  11. Gorgeous chair. Others suggested the possibilities of how to doctor the dent in the shade. I think I would trim the top and bottom of it by gluing a narrow strip of an appropriate color/design to finish it. It looks too plain to me. For sure, a bit of the green and orange.

As to creating a pleasant grouping for that intimate corner:

A small round table at the right of the chair. Every seating spot needs a place to rest a cup or a book. The basket could go by the lamp. A light throw draped casually over its side? Bedrooms should look homey, not rigid. Crystal’s idea of using a quilt or something similar to hang over the breaker box sounds like an easy solution. (Caveat: in case you might be incapacitated and so unable to show someone where it is, seems to me you have to post a notice somewhere as to location.)
