Our Bedroom Is Finished! (Before And After)

Our bedroom is finished!! And with this, the main areas of our bedroom suite are finished — the foyer, the walk-in closet with the laundry area, our bathroom, and now our bedroom. I still have one more area to finish (the storage closet), but that will have to wait a while. At least for now, I can close the doors on that closet (which is currently a bathroom) and everything else is finished. So without further delay, here’s our new finished bedroom…

Newly remodeled master bedroom with teal grasscloth wallpaper, creamy white wainscoting, teal velvet curtains, and upholstered headboard.

I am absolutely thrilled with how this bedroom turned out. It was a massive undertaking. If you’ve been around a while, you know that this room used to be our home gym. (You can see the whole before and after of our home gym here.) And it would probably still be our home gym if we hadn’t had some major flooring issues that required all new subfloors and hardwood flooring. It was during that catastrophe that we decided to turn this area of our home into our master bedroom suite. And in hindsight, I’m so thankful that it turned out the way it did. I think using this area of the house as our bedroom suite has surpassed my expectations and turned out so much better than our original plans of building an addition onto the house to include a brand-new master bedroom and closet.

So let me show you how this area has evolved over the years. When we bought the house, this room looked like this…

Bedroom makeover - before - what it looked like when we bought the house, a fixer upper built in 1948

And then I turned the room into a home gym, which looked like this…

Colorful home gym with striped walls, white curtains, and black commercial carpet squares

And now this is our bedroom, and that same view looks like this…

Bedroom remodel - after -- with teal grasscloth wallpaper, a DIY upholstered headboard and bed base, orange accents

The room has always had a little “hallway” in the entrance, but it used to have a door leading to this little hallway and into the room.

Bedroom remodel - before. What this room looked like when we bought the house, a 1948 fixer upper.

When the room became our home gym, that little “hallway” got longer because we moved a wall in the hallway. I explained all of that in this post.

Home gym with colorful striped walls and black carpet squares.

We still have that little hallway leading from the foyer into the bedroom, but it’s about three feet shorter now than it was when the room was a home gym. And now, there’s no door from the foyer into the bedroom. I had that door, and the wall around it, removed so that the two areas are open to each other.

Entrance into our new bedroom (master bedroom remodel)

Here’s what the wall on the front of the house looked like when we bought the house. It had a window, and you can see that there was a closet on the wall to the left of this wall.

When this was our home gym, we kept that window and I had the closet area opened up (i.e., there were no doors on the closet) so that it felt more open to the room.

But when we decided to use this as our bedroom, I had the closet removed completely to make the actual bedroom larger, and we had the window replaced with a door.

Here’s a better look at how the wall with the closet looked when we bought the house…

And here’s how it looked when it was opened up for our home gym.

And now those walls that surrounded the closet area are completely gone, which left more room for a recliner and dresser. Removing that closet make the room feel so much bigger.

And then looking back towards the entrance to the room, you can see that the closet formed that little “hallway” entrance into the room, but it was only about three feet long, which was the depth of the closet behind that wall. You could still see the door.

But when we moved the wall in the hallway (i.e., the foyer) to square up the room next to this one to turn it into our bathroom, that made the “hallway” entrance to the room about twice as long, and you could no longer see the door from this view.

But now that the closet walls are gone, and the door and wall surrounding the door are gone, the area looks much more open. There’s still a little hallway from the foyer into the bedroom, but it’s back to being about three feet long again. And without the door and wall surrounding the door, it feel much more open now.

When we bought the house, this wall of the room was a solid wall. The original master bedroom was on the other side of that wall, and both this room and the original master bedroom were accessible via doorways in the hallway.

But when we turned the original master bedroom into our new master bathroom, we moved the wall in the hallway, closed up the door that originally went from the hallway into that room, and added a new doorway from the home gym into the new master bathroom. Our original plan was to add a new master bedroom on the other side of our new bathroom. Had we stuck with that plan, all three rooms — the home gym, the new master bathroom, and our new master bedroom — would have all been connected with doorways leading from one room to the next.

But now that this room is our bedroom, our bathroom is very conveniently located through this door.

Those are all of the before and after picture I have for you, so now let’s get into the details. The wallpaper that I used isn’t available anymore, but it’s very similar to a grasscloth wallpaper by Thibault. So if you’re searching for teal grasscloth wallpaper, I suggest looking there first.

The ceramic birds are from Amazon (affiliate link), and I love birds, so I used a whole lot of them and created a freeform wall installation with them.

I made the velvet draperies using this teal velvet fabric from Ballard Designs (affiliate link). The white sheers are from Amazon (affiliate link). The window shades are from Amazon (affiliate link). The brushed gold curtain rods are also from Amazon (affiliate link). The beaded fandelier is from Wayfair (affiliate link). The rug is from Amazon, but unfortunately, it has been discontinued.

The sunburst mirrors over the headboard are from Hobby Lobby. I found the lamps on Facebook Marketplace and gave those a makeover. I built and upholstered the headboard (instructions here), and I built and upholstered the bed base (instructions here). For the bed, I used this fabric from Spoonflower (affiliate link). My mom made the large pillows for me, and I made the duvet cover (instructions here). For those, I used this fabric from Ballard Designs (affiliate link). The cream quilt and matching pillowcases are from Amazon (affiliate link).

I have to say that the fandelier has far exceeded our expectations. Matt has commented several times now how much he loves it. We’ve both been surprised at just how much air flow comes from that small fan.

I took so many pictures (a ridiculous number of pictures, to be honest), so I’ll keep my commentary to a minimum and just let y’all look around.

The recliner is from Interior Define (affiliate link). I had it upholstered in performance velvet in the color French. The little side table is from Amazon (affiliate link), and I spray painted it gold. The pillow on the chair is made with this fabric from Spoonflower (affiliate link). The floor lamp is from Amazon (affiliate link). And the artwork is from Minted (affiliate link). And I just want to mention that the artwork is covering our breaker box. So our ugly electrical panel is now hidden behind that beautiful framed print, but it’s still easily accessible if and when I need to get to it.

I bought the dresser locally several years ago for our previous bedroom. The paint color is Moss Point Green by Glidden. All of the trim/wainscoting in the room is painted Polar Bear by Behr.

The floors throughout are red oak. They were installed unfinished, and then I finished them with Bona Natural Seal (affiliate link) and Bona Traffic HD in the extra matte finish (affiliate link). You can read more about that process here.

I had originally planned to frame the TV and then find a pretty art screensaver for the TV. But in the end, I decided that I don’t really mind that there’s a huge TV on the wall of our bedroom, and I don’t want to disguise it. I’ll let the actual artwork be artwork, and I’ll let the TV just be a TV. I’m actually quite satisfied with how it looks, and more importantly, it functions great for us.

I think that just about covers everything! If I’ve left anything out that you want more information about, just let me know!

  7. Once again you have followed your heart, and it turned out beautiful. I feel as you have said many times, make your home you! I have done this to my current home. I do not care about the effect of my changes affecting the resell of my home. I think your home is made for how you live and what you like and for that alone it is beautiful.

  8. Maybe I missed it, but is there a picture with the draperies all closed?…I’d love to see the finished look of them closed…Fabulous job and a beautiful bedroom suite…So much talent!…to draw it/design it/ engineer it/sew/paint/sheetrock/electical/plumbing, etc etc…

    1. I don’t have one because I’ll never close the draperies. I always make draperies for looks, not for use. At night, I use the sheers for privacy. They’re so full that if they’re all pulled in front of the door, no one can see through. And on the side windows, I use the shade at night for privacy. During the day, I leave the shades open and if we want more diffused light, I’ll close the sheers. But the draperies always stay open.

    2. I was going to ask the same thing, but then I read Kristi’s reply. I love everything about this bedroom suite except the sheers and was hoping to see a look with them covered up. I think they’re on a separate rod so I would love to see less of them and have the panels more of a feature. Maybe it’s the color of them or maybe it’s just me-sorry no shade meant.

  9. Just wonderful, I admire you more with each project. If you don’t mind, I copy some of your diy’s! Just can’t help it.

Apparently, you had enough wallpaper to replace the stained.

    Love IT!

PS. I think you have talked me into a Fandalier

    1. I’ve been so amazed at that fandelier. And the fact that Matt, all on his own without my prompting, has told me at least three times now how much he loves it is amazing to me. Ours has six speeds. We started out using it on 4 during the night. I thought that would be comparable to the medium speed we used our big fan on during the night. But after two nights of the fandelier on 4, Matt asked if we could put it on 3 the next night because he was getting too cold. 😀

  10. Kristi, what an amazing transformation of the whole area, not to mention the gorgeous master bath. What a suite, I don’t think I would be able to stay out of the room right now, I think I would just sit in the chair and be giddy. You have an extraordinary talent, and it doesn’t break the bank to do it. Gorgeous just doesn’t begin to describe it, so I will just keep scrolling through the pictures and drool all over my keyboard. Thanks for taking us along on the journey, what a ride, what a ride!
Cheers to you, Matt and the Fur Inspection Team!

  11. Wow! I don’t have enough adjectives to describe this gorgeous room or all the sweat equity that went into it. What a magnificent makeover.

  12. It really is a lovely bedroom. I love the color choices, patterns and textures you chose. the only thing that still throws me off (and this is purely my own viewpoint, so I hope it doesn’t offend!) is the weight visually of the drapery on the door. I think there is too much fullness. The door isn’t wider than the windows (unless it’s a few inches) yet there is double the fabric. As I’ve said, this is my opinion, and you can totally ignore it! The rest of the room is beautiful!

  13. As usual you knocked it out of the park! I questioned (in my head of course) using so many teals in the room wondering if there would be enough contrast but it’s absolute perfection! Love it!!

  14. Stunning! Gorgeous! Beautiful! Amazing! ALL the words, Kristi!! I love it all, but I am particularly pleased with the addition of the bird fabric duvet. It really finished that bed. I hope you are as proud of yourself as we all are….Now go ENJOY!!

  15. Wow, that is quite a before and after. Very nice work.
Unless it’s too personal. A cost breakdown would be nice. I am not a blue color person, but it is beautiful. Great job. I am sure it feels wonderful to have your own suite now. The floors are beautiful also. Oh and your mixing of patterns/colors are inspiring.

  16. It looks wonderful, you did a great job. And thanks for leaving the TV as a TV, sometimes I feel like I’m the only person who cares about design but is not hung up on “hiding” the TV. 🙂

  17. It is absolutely beautiful. You did a fabulous job. It has been a mostly happy journey with you.

  18. Wonderful job, Kristie. You always know exactly what to do, what colours to use and how to make things work. Congratulations.

  19. I have no words. Everyone before me has used all the adjectives out there. I cant add to them. It is just gorgeous is all I can say. Well done Kristi, well done.

  20. Beautiful, Kristi!! What else could be said, you are amazing! Enjoy as I know you and Matt will! Job well done. BTW, I must have missed it, but it looks like the side table by your chair is the same color as the lamp? I love it! What is that color?
