Out Of Curiosity:: Are You A Trend Follower?

I’ve been thinking quite a bit about decorating trends lately.  The topic really hit me when I read this post on Design Sponge several weeks ago.  I like to keep up with trends, but I’m generally not obsessed with trends.  And when it comes to my own home, I pretty much make up my own rules, and I like what I like, regardless of whether or not it’s trendy.

But for some reason, that post really played games with my head.

Ever since then, there’s been this annoying, nagging little voice in my head every time I look at my kitchen wall that tells me perhaps I need to find something else for that wall.

I really hate that nagging voice, because you know what?  I like my birds!!  People can say that birds are overdone…that this trend needs to go away…that birds are soooooo last year.  It doesn’t matter.  I like them, and they’re staying.

I really do get irritated at myself for allowing that video and that post (and the comments) worm their way into my head like that, because I’m generally not like that.

So that’s why the topic of trends has been on my mind so much the last few weeks.  Where do you stand on the topic of design trends?  Are you they type who has to rush out and get the latest and greatest and be sure it’s incorporated into your home?  Do you even know what the latest trends are?

  1. I think it's interesting what comes and goes "in style", and I usually think it's a bit odd. Once in a while, something comes up that I like, and I might try to fit it in… but I usually just smile and nod and do my own thing.

  2. I just bought a new house and will move into it soon. It has golden oak kitchen cabinets that will be painted before I move in. I look at the trends to get the information on what's popular. I have found out that oak cabinets are out…I had them in the 90's and wanted somethng different anyway.

  3. I love your birds! In fact, the wall mural has inspired me to do a similar painting (on an old window) to add to the decor of my home. Thanks for the inspiration — don't let those nay-sayers bother you!

  4. I like looking at the latest design styles, I just love the eye candy. But as someone with a job outside of the design field, I really don't have the time to go trying everything, or even some things. If I sew a new couple of pillows every few years, that's usually too much.

  5. Sometimes there are trends that just get so overused that I have a hard time looking at them – like that Keep Calm and Carry On poster. If I never saw another it'd be too soon. Other trends, like colors, I don't mind using as long as it's subtle and not hitting folks over the head with, "Hey, I'm trendy! Look at me!" trendiness.

  6. Great post! I think about this. I like to know what new trends are basically because I want to see some new ideas, not because I need to fall in line. Sometimes trends bother me, especially for big ticket items. One year dark hardwood floors are in, one year light. We installed our own hardwood floors and when we go to sell, if someone says "I love the home but wish there were dark hardwood floors because they're so hot right now" I think I will flip my lid. We have to like things because we like the.

If you love your birds, keep 'em. The wall is gorgeous and really suits the room/cabinetry.

  7. P.S. – that said, I think your birds are cute and understated, not screaming, "I'm trendy! I put a bird on it!"

  8. You know, I think about trends a lot myself! So hard not to succumb to the pressure you feel to be on trend.

For example, I have always been crazy about sunflowers…then all of the sudden for a couple of years, they were everywhere! It almost made me stop liking them! So the trend has come and gone, but I still have my sunflower things!

I like to incorporate trends in smaller pieces, like little accessories or art, that are cheap to change once the trend passes.

……and don't even think about getting rid of that tree!

  9. I like to look/read home decorating magazines and blogs, but seldom want to do the same at my house. Besides, by the time I finally make up my mind, it's out of style anyway!

  10. It takes me so long to finish a DIY project, that if I followed the trends, they'd be long out of style by the time I finished! lol

    Thank you for post.Underfloor heating

  12. I am noticing more and more, that trends are getting over exposed with the surge of new blogs on the internet. I keep seeing designers using the same trendy (chevron, trellis etc.) fabric patterns, lamps and pieces of furniture over and over again.
