Bedroom Progress — New Bedding And Reading Corner Finished
I have more bedroom progress to share with you today, and I’m so excited about it because I really am getting down to the last few projects on this room. It’s so close to being finished now! And there’s just something about finally being able to get the bedding on a bed that really makes it feel like the project is wrapping up.
I have to give my mom a HUGE shoutout because she made all of the pillows for me. While I was working on the headboard and bed base, she was sewing pillows, so this was a team effort. And now that it’s all put together, here’s how it looks…

It’s so fun seeing a plan come together, and I couldn’t be happier with how this is turning out.

The headboard fabric is from Spoonflower (affiliate link) in the color Teal Lagoon. The bird fabric is from Ballard Designs (affiliate link). And the striped fabric is one that I designed and had printed at Spoonflower.

And she added piping in green to the bird fabric pillows. This is a green that I matched to the dresser color and then had printed at Spoonflower.

For the bedcover, I decided to go with a simple quilt. I bought it in two colors — a lighter cream color and a darker sand color. I found these quilts on Amazon (affiliate link), and while this quilt is very similar to the one I use in our previous bedroom, this one is thicker, so it feels and looks nicer, especially after it was washed and dried.

It’s so fun seeing my ideas go from mockups on my computer to the actual thing in our bedroom.

Anyway, here’s a closer look at the quilt in the color Light Sand with the pillows.

And here’s a closer look at the quilt in the color Cream with the pillows.

I took a day to decide. I still want to make a throw for the bed in the bird fabric. It’ll be trimmed in the green fabric, just like the pillows, and I initially thought I wanted some contrast between the cream background of the bird fabric and the color of the quilt. So I was really leaning towards the Light Sand color at first. But in the end, I went with the Cream color. I’m so used to using white bedding, and I thought that the Light Sand might look dingy to me. I’m very happy with my final selection, and I’m really pleased with the quality of this quilt.

I bought the 28″ square feather pillow inserts on Amazon, and I would give these three out of five stars. I’ve bought the smaller sizes many times before, and I’ve always been very pleased with them. But on these bigger sizes, I think they get a bit stingy with the amount of feathers they use. They’re nice, but they’re not filled nearly enough for my taste. So they’re a bit slouchy, and I can’t stand slouchy pillows.

I especially don’t like the thought of these specific pillows being slouchy. Since the bird fabric is a main accent fabric in the room, I want these pillows to be filled as much as possible so that the fabric really shines. I considered opening up the seams and adding more feathers to each one since I always have extra feather pillow inserts on hand.

But then I decided to try out adding two pillow inserts into one pillow cover, and that did the trick. So I’ve ordered two more pillow inserts for the other pillow cover, and they’ll be here on Monday. It costs more, but it saves time, and my time is more valuable to me right now when I have other projects I need to be working on.

So until I get the new feather inserts, I’ll have to live with slouchy pillows. 😀 At least I still get to enjoy looking at the pretty fabrics. I also got the new feet for the bed base yesterday, so I’ll be swapping those out today.

And now that we can see the bed with the pillows in place, we can revisit whether or not the wall over the headboard needs a little decorative touch or not. I’m leaning towards yes, but I’m still not 100% sure. I’ll make that final decision once I get the draperies and the second lamp finished.

And now, turning to another part of the room, I think my reading corner is finished. Well, I might possibly make one small change, but for the most part, it’s finished. I’m pleased to tell you that we no longer have to look at this eyesore on the wall anymore. I’ve been looking at this open breaker box for a year now, but I finally remember to buy replacement screws so that I could put the cover back on. (The original screws got lost in all of the construction over the last year.)

But more importantly, I got the artwork back that I purchased to cover the breaker box. I bought this print from Minted (affiliate link) in the 30″ x 30″ size. I had it matted and framed so that the finished dimensions are 36″ x 36″. I used my new favorite glass, museum glass, and then chose a simple gold frame for it. I didn’t want a big, fancy frame because I need the finished framed picture to be as light as possible so that I can easily remove it from the wall when I need to access the breaker box.

My mom made the pillow for the chair as well, and this is another fabric I found on Spoonflower (affiliate link).

The one thing I might change is the little side table. It’s metal, and it was originally a cream color. I didn’t want or like the cream color, so I tried to paint it to look like wood. But in the end, that was a fail. It doesn’t look like wood at all. 😀 So I’ll probably end up painting it gold. It’ll be a quick and easy fix.
But overall, I’m so excited about how this room is turning out! I have one major project to finish — the draperies. And then I have a few more small projects to tackle before the room is officially finished. I’m so close to that finish line!

Hi Kristi: The master bedroom is looking great. I have to say that the headboard and bed base fabric is gorgeous with the grass cloth wallpaper. The mockup pictures made the design look a greenish teal color but it definitely is a sharp white family color in real like and is absolutely beautiful. Both the bird fabric pillows and the striped horizontal pillow are perfect accents to the upholstered bed and in the right dosage! The reading corner looks great and again, I love your choice of pillow fabric. Bold and beautiful. Kudos Kristi! I hope you and Matt have a great weekend.
Kristi: Forgot to mention, yesterday, I thought more about your question of artwork around the headboard. I still definitely think yes to having it frame and accent the headboard but have you considered have 5 frames – 1 in the center above the headboard, 2 more slightly smaller or different sized and then 2 more even smaller ones flanking the headboard below the 2nd row and the 4 pics all lining up on the same vertical plane? Very symmetrical!
Looks fantastic! I think having art over the bed would really work. And your reading corner is perfect. Have you considered painting the table green? It wouldn’t be too matchy-matchy, just a tie-in to the chest. But not gonna lie, green is my favorite color and one can’t have too much of it.
It. Looks. Fabulous.
I’m in awe of your hard work and talent.
It all looks beautiful! Love the stripes, love the bird pattern, all of it! I think the top of the little table actually does look like wood, it’s just the base that doesn’t. You could leave the top as is and paint the base, then if you don’t like it just paint the whole thing. I’m so happy for you that your beautiful bedroom is coming together!
Have you considered placing a mirror above the headboard?… A shallow wide rectangular mirror
Yee-haw!
(As we say in WV!)
Loving the pillows! Mom does good work! Don’t you wish whoever makes bedding would sell an extra sham with bedding for queen sizes and up? I feel like you could use a third pillow in the back (with the quilt fabric) to help support the ones in front. No matter, it still is nice! Now I know you like the white bedding, and I do too, but I also think the cream color gave a bit softer look, and warmed up the feel of the room. I like the white holding the perimeter of the room in the panels and sheers, and the white bedding,to me,is overkill. I would prefer the cream myself. At any rate, the bird fabric in a throw will help soften the white. Almost there!!!
I forgot to ask, are you having a mirror over the green chest of drawers, or is that where the T.V. will be?
She has said before, the TV will go there. She also talked about a frame, but dont know if that’s still a plan. 😁
That’s where the TV will go. 🙂
The artwork over the breaker box looks beautiful. The colors are perfect in the room. The pillows your mother made are lovely. I especially like the green trim on the pillows made with the bird fabric. Sorry, but I am not a fan of the cream quilt. It makes me think of a mattress pad. I would prefer a pale green color from the bird fabric but, it’s not my bedroom.
I just love it when a plan comes together. It is looking so incredible, I’m afraid I’d be losing time just standing there and admiring all the work I’ve done. I’m a double stuff pillow stuffer from way back, it seems like count on us having to buy two of them…sigh. Keep up the great work.
Cheers to you, Matt, and the fur babies!
Have you considered a juju headdress for over the bed? I think they’re cute and add interesting texture. I bet you could even DIY something to your exact measurements.
I hadn’t considered it, but I love those!
Did I miss a curtain on the right (as you look at it) of the bed? Or is it not finished quite yet? Either way, kudos, everything is looking so pretty.
The curtains aren’t finished yet. 🙂
It looks so wonderful!
I live in Earthquake Country, so of course I’m going to say ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HANGING ABOVE A HEADBOARD!! 😁
Not true….you could hang your lightweight hat collection above the bed. No danger there!😁
STUNNING! I love not just the colors and patterns, but especially the scale you used to make such a dramatic pop of energy! It feels like a room you’d never want to leave in the morning. You have a great eye for what works together. I’m blown away!
She has said before, the TV will go there. She also talked about a frame, but dont know if that’s still a plan. 😁
Only one thing to say! I LOVE IT ALL!
After you finish your draperies, and when you are ready to address your little table, consider two things: First, the paint appears to be too shiny, giving away that it is made of metal. Second, have you thought of doing a faux bois paint treatment on it? Martha Stewart has lots of videos on this sort of treatment, and it could be just the thing that table needs to look just right.
I actually did a faux bois treatment on it, but I don’t think I used enough variation of color. There are too many curvy areas to use a grain tool on it, though. And I was so disappointed in the finish. I used a clear flat spray over the whole thing, and it turned out shiny for some reason.
Looking fabulous! I still think an arched airy metal branch in gold, copper, or white would look good over the headboard. It’s leaning into your theme of floral and birds and wouldn’t be as heavy as pictures or mirrors or plates, would let the stunning headboard and pillows take visual precedence.
Love love love your bedroom and every detail is perfection. Do you have a link to the beautiful area rug?
My favorite bed covering is the gray fur in the one picture. Warmer than any of the quilts and is self-cleaning. Easy to remove from the bed if Matt gets too hot.
Everything else looks great!
Thanks Mom for sewing the beautiful pillows! I really like the the side table! Are you sleeping well all night in the new room?
I didn’t sleep well at all the first night. I never sleep well my first night in a new location, even if it is my own home and on my own mattress. I just have to get used to the specific sounds, light, etc., in that new space. But I’ve slept well since then!
Maybe you could make a trio of something like this for above your bed.

The room is stunning! All the details, right down to matching the green piping on the pillows to the green color of the dresser are just crazy good.
FYI the link for “the 28″ square feather pillow inserts on Amazon” brought me to Ballard Designs. I also have slouchy pillows that I don’t like. Your bedroom looks beautiful! Your mother is amazing! Your instructions are very detailed. Loving it all!
Looks good.
Nothing above the bed, it only takes away from the headboard, bedding and pillows.
LOVE it!!. Still I think lighting on the wall would be nice. The lamps block your windows and the lights would add “art” to the wall
