Artwork Above The Headboard? Yes or No?

Matt and I have been in our new bedroom for two days now. It has been amazing to finally be sleeping in a proper bedroom. But also, I realized very quickly that having Matt in a room that I’m still working on and still needing to take “progress” pictures as I get stuff done is really putting a cramp in my whole blogging process that I’ve become accustomed to. Since I’m the one who signed up for this whole blogging thing, and Matt didn’t sign up for it or volunteer to be featured in pictures on my blog, that means I only have a small window of time (about three hours a day from 10:00am to 1:00pm) to take all of the pictures I want to take for my post the next day. I’m SO not used to that. I’m used to being able to take pictures all day long, right up until I turn the lights out and head to bed.

With that said, I have all of the bedding (minus one throw for the bed that I still want to make), and I had hoped to show that to y’all today. It looks SO GOOD in my humble opinion, and I was so excited to share that with y’all. But I couldn’t get it done in that three-hour window yesterday, so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to share those updates with you.

So in the meantime, y’all can help me answer this question that has been nagging me ever since I got the bed set up two days ago. And that question is about artwork above the headboard. I generally love artwork or something decorative above a headboard. It doesn’t have to be a framed print. In our last bedroom, I used a big sunburst mirror above the bed, and I absolutely loved it.

guest bedroom - finished - headboard wall and closet - vertical

But, of course, that bedroom was totally different from our current one. The headboard itself wasn’t really a feature, and it was much lower, leaving more wall space above it for the sunburst mirror. The bedding was also kind of plain. Instead of making the headboard and bedding the feature in that room, the wall was the feature, and that allowed me to hang something decorative above the headboard.

Our new bedroom is very different. In this room, the headboard and bedding (which I hope to get a picture of today) is the feature. Not only does it have decorative fabric on it, but it’s much taller and arched. That makes it much more difficult to put something above it, but I would still like to have something there…I think.

Ever since I put the grasscloth wallpaper up, I had been envisioning a set of three prints above the headboard. I even shared this picture with you a couple of months ago with that idea.

But now that the bed is in place, I’m having a hard time envisioning that. There’s only 27.5 inches between the top of the headboard and the crown molding, but I have this unwritten decorating rule that no artwork can be hung higher than the window or door trim, so that limits the available space even more. So I found a random picture online (definitely not the one that I would use, but I wanted to find something with orange in it) and did a quick mockup to see how that would look. I don’t love it. Of course, I could choose something with smaller artwork and more mat so that it doesn’t demand quite so much attention, but even at that, I’m not sure how I feel about the idea of three pictures hanging side-by-side above the arched headboard.

Of course, one small square picture looks ridiculous…

So if I do a framed, matted picture, something rectangular with a landscape configuration seems to fit the best, but I’m not sure if I like this. That seems way too high to hang a framed, matted picture. It almost seems comical to hang a picture so high on the wall to me.

So I think I’ve abandoned the idea of hanging any kind of framed and matted artwork above the headboard, but I still really want to hang something above the headboard. And I think I should also abandon the idea of finding anything square or rectangular. I think if I put anything on that wall, it needs to be a different shape altogether. So that made me think of possibly using a collection of small sunbursts that could be arranged around the arch of the headboard.

I just don’t know, and I’m kind of at a loss for ideas other than that one. Whatever I put there, I’d like to be more textural rather than a print that people feel like they need to get close to in order to see it since it won’t be possible to get close. I’d like something textural, shapely, and maybe a collection of something that can be hung around the arch of the headboard. So if you have any ideas other than a collection of small sunburst mirrors, I’d love to hear your ideas!

In the meantime, I’m going to try my hardest to get pictures of the bed all made up with the bedding and pillows while Matt is out of the bedroom today so that I can show y’all how it looks tomorrow. I’m so excited that I’m on the home stretch with this bedroom!!

UPDATE: I looked through some options at Wayfair and Amazon and did a few mockups of some possible options. They’re all mirrors instead of artwork. First up, I found this 12-inch mirror on Amazon (affiliate link), so I could purchase three.

This mirror is from Wayfair (affiliate link) and it’s all one piece. It looks like it’s asymmetrical, so I’m not sure if I could live with that. But perhaps I could make something myself using this idea.

This set of five mirrors (affiliate link) is the perfect size. And of course, they would be reflecting the room, so they wouldn’t actually look this bright.

And finally, this mirror from Wayfair (affiliate link) is too big for the available space, but I could easily make something like this myself.

    1. Came here to say the same. The headboard is holding court in that bedroom – nothing needs to hanging above it imho 🙂

  1. How about some more of the white birds you have on the other wall? I think they’d be perfect that space. Your bedframe looks beautiful!

    1. This was also my idea, if one must have “something” above the headboard. I personally think the headboard IS the art. 🙂

  2. Use the bird fabric in 3 picture frames above the headboard. That fabric is too pretty not to have around the room.

  3. I do feel that it needs something, but agree that framed prints feel too big. I know you did your bird wall in the other room…what if you did something similar to that? Not necessarily birds, but the same idea. A narrow, wide sculptural element of some type.

  4. I think if you don’t know what to do with the space, don’t force anything. In my experience, if I leave it alone, the perfect solution usually shows up on its own in time. I think with the beautiful bed and the beautiful bedding you will have, along with the rest of the room’s decor, it will be beautiful without anything up there. And as you said, not every wall needs to have artwork on it! However, I have a vague idea that whatever should go up there should be small, long, visually light, and gold; like a bit of jewelry. Something that won’t stand out and demand attention, but just kind of accents everything else that is in the room.

I am also very excited for you to be nearly finished with your bedroom! Even though we don’t see what the rest of your life/house looks like, I can imagine how stressful it is having the other parts of your house out of order and not being used as you would like. I am excited you will be able to start getting back to “normal”!

      1. I was also thinking of something sculptural in a gold metal. These birds would be great if they are the right size. Several smaller sized sunburst mirrors may also be nice. I do not care for rectangular or square artwork over an arched headboard. I wouldn’t make a decision until the bedding is on the bed and the bedside tables are moved closer to the bed with the lamps on them.

  5. I love the idea of the 3 orange prints. What if you hang the center one as you have pictured and lower the other 2 so they follow the curvature of the headboard? That way not all of them are so high on the wall and it helps to emphasize the headboard. Would love the orange or your terrific bird fabric on that wall.

  6. Hi Kristi, Like you, I too think artwork, of some sort, looks good above a bed and elevates the room. What about a set of three pictures – one in the center (maybe a horizontal rectangular shaped) flanked by two identically shaped (to each other, not necessarily the center artwork shape) hung lower and even with each other – framing the sides of the headboard. Your bedroom is really coming along great. Congrats for the move-in!

  7. You’re artistic. Two triangle abstracts with your colors – right angled or obtuse triangles. You’d have to build them yourself but you just did curves. Piece of cake! Make them like wrapped canvases, or better yet, add your nailhead trim around the edges as a frame.

  8. Remember those birds? Something like that with dimension and where you could adjust them to fit in a way to please you. Even a few of them – maybe paint them to use the colors in the bedroom?

  9. Since your headboard is so tall and the focal point what if you put sconces on either side instead of artwork?

  10. Are you against greenery swags? Two smaller vertical ones on each side of a small mirror or picture in the middle would fit the space, I think. Some folks dont like them,I personally have them everywhere! LOL

  11. How about some textural abstract art in a tryptich? Should be pretty easy to do with a small masonry trowel. I emailed you a picture since I can’t add one here. If you search textural artwork orange white teal triptych you find lots of inspiration. You could also do something as a large acrylic pour which you’ve done before.

  12. I think it would be helpful if we saw the whole picture with the mattress and bedding. I agree with others that it would appear too high if hanging something.
Are the nightstands centered on the windows? It seems an awful long reach to make them usable when in bed.

  13. I think that once you dress your bed with pillows, quilts and throws you should let it stand as the focal point. Anything more than that is superfluous. The headboard alone is enough with all the other details on the nightstands and the curtains.

  14. Maybe something metal with just a simple arch downward but not the same as the head board shape. Just a thought!

  15. The patterns, shapes and colors in the room remind me of the beautiful ornate Moroccan doorways and arches. I could see some type of gold filagree arched element looking great over the bed. I did a search for “decorative moroccan gold arch wall art” and saw some neat ideas.

  16. I’m thinking something wrought iron like this: https://a.co/d/10fZw9R ( I hope this translates, if not I searched for wrought iron decorative pieces on Amazon.) This has many different variations, and they are less than $20! I think whatever you choose should be visually lightweight. There’s enough “weight” on that wall, with the window treatments and headboard. Art seems too weighty to me. Or if you could find something like you had used to remake your desk (those leaf pieces) that would be nice too!

    1. Yesss….. this would be perfect IMHO. Delicate and not heavy, and keeping the nature theme. Great find!!!

    2. Those are very pretty! I agree that the light and airy look is much better than framed artwork. I like that they are curvy and could be hung to compliment the curve of the headboard. Lots of colors to choose from and SO inexpensive!

  17. I usually want some kind of fiber art (macrame, fabric, quilt, etc ) above our bed. But in this case you are good in that department, you already have a lot of beautiful, soft elements in the room. I remember when you made a series of resin half orbs? Coasters? Something like those, mounted in an arch above the headboard, could bring in a little more of the greens and oranges to that area. You could even make them in absract shapes, like agates or sea glass shapes. I think it depends on how the bed looks when it is dressed. I also think it looks great without anything. But having something colorful with a little shine would be beautiful.

  18. If it’s a repeating print can it also be behind the headboard when hung? The headboard kind of disappears into the wall

  19. Your headboard is your art. Wait until your second lamp is finished and bedding is added before deciding. Long vertical light color would be best if you need something.

  20. Why not get all the bedding on the bed and finish the draperies before deciding what you want above the headboard? Let it breathe a little? Then it will flow naturally. But sometimes a little blank space gives the eye a rest.

  21. Give it some time before you decide. Get the bedding and curtains done at least. You can add something later if it feels empty. But I bet it doesn’t. 🙂 I’m glad you guys are enjoying being in the bedroom finally!

  22. When you close your eyes and go all the way back to the beginning and imagine what you wanted for this bedroom, what do you see above the headboard? We all have images of what our room will look like when we first get started, but sometimes we forget some of the details, so look back, take a deep breath and think of what was inspiring you, and I bet it will come to you. I liked your idea of sunbursts. The birds you did on the wall are over the top; it’s a shame you can’t have a “tree” for them to land in over the bed.
Cheers to you, Matt and the fur babies!

  23. Hey, Kristi,

What would you think about some kind of a leafy metal arch that could follow the line of the headboard?

In any case, the bedroom is just beautiful. I hope that it is worth all of the work you have done. I also hope that this year won’t be too hard and that you find the sweet spot between productivity and rest. Good luck with that! 😉

  24. 3 or 5 of the birds trying to catch up to the flock. Or leave it blank until inspiration strikes at the least likely time.

  25. I like it with nothing. The headboard is big and can be the focal. Drapes will be there too. That’s enough in my opinion. If I did anything, it would maybe be some metal decor. Butterfly or bird. The metal stuff like at hobby lobby

  26. Wha about continuing the birds flying across the wall to carryover from the long wall? Not as many, but in a flying pattern as well

  27. I know what I would do: I immediately thought of two vertical scroll-type Japanese pictures one on either side of the bed so they frame the headboard. They would be in harmony with that wonderful Japanese fabric and you could chose motifs that would go with your bird fabric, as there are so many bird-related paintings in Japanese art. Or you could perhaps use the bird fabric itself and arrange it like those scroll-like vertical/rectangular art works in order to tie everything together.
I would also love the entire wall without anything added to it, but I have a feeling that you prefer an embellishment there to make you completely happy 🙂

  28. I would just wait before making a decision. If you only have 3 or so hours with Matt not in the bed, who is going to spend enough time there to notice art work above the bed. There are so many pretty things for a visitor to look at before they walk out of the room.
If you have to hang something above the bed it should be long and narrow. Maybe a piece of driftwood.

  29. A plethora of ideas from so many. In my opinion, it is a premature decision. The cart before the horse. Wiser to contemplate when every other thing is in place. I know that is not your thinking pattern. The creative juices flow and you go with them. We all have different planning and timing styles.

I found myself wondering why you didn’t move in after you had everything done. No need to explain. 🙂

As for decor over the bed: It doesn’t need a thing. Certainly, no more birds, no rectangular pictures, no sconces, or ornate stuff just to fill the space. Well, that will be for you to decide. You are the only person who needs to be happy with it.

It will be a pleasant haven for you.

  30. I was wondering if you had thought of possibly something of wood. Like the wood inserts you put in the sides of your desk, but something that would fit the wall.

  31. I’m team nothing above that gorgeous headboard. That’s your art. That wall has plenty of interest with grass cloth, patterned, shaped headboard, woven shades, drapes, lamps.

  32. Dilemma! I really like the sunburst mirrors and the third set as well that you could make yourself. The Wayfair set doesn’t look good at all.
My suggestion is to start a computer file of possibilities and add to it as you are surfing the ‘Net. Do this for several months and let your brain cogitate subconsciously on it while you finish everything else in the room. Then come back to your file. Start eliminating anything that doesn’t strike a chord with you. Right now, you have too many possibilities that would be nice so you have to narrow it down. Give your brain a chance to calm down by finishing the room. Something above the headboard is not essential at the moment. Put this on the back-burner for now until the room is otherwise totally finished. After that period of time, what you finally choose will be perfect.

  33. The 3 asymmetrical mirrors from wayfair, to me, complement without taking and overpowering the small area. It’s just enough without making it a central eye draw.
So happy you get to enjoy a real bedroom again.

  34. I don’t know much about decorating but I do know to hang art 10” above the sofa and well below the ceiling. Since putting holes in the grass cloth is a once and done thing I suggest you put “art above the headboard” on the way back burner and give it serious thought. Personally I don’t feel you need anything there. It strikes me as trying too hard. The headboard is art in itself. At first I thought of sconces if you want to read in bed but I’m guessing the lamps will be close enough to you for that.
Give your mind a rest, time will tell.

  35. I wouldn’t squeeze in a piece of artwork, if I were you. The headboard itself is a work of art — unusual shape AND unusual pattern. When you get the bed fully complete with bedding, then you can make a better decision. Waiting a bit seems like the best solution for now, subject to change.

  36. Believe it or not, I love the “all one piece, assymetrical” one, but I realize you need symmetrical for your home. 😁😁

  37. I agree with the scultural idea. I think visually thoses spaces on the side are the space that could use something and maybe something small and circular that connects them in the center. Thin scroll-y or vine-y with an open ddesign (i.e. the leaves would be outlined instead of solid like on your desk) and a circular filigree type thing in the center. I hope that makes sense.

    1. So the layout would be like an upside down “v” the long side meeting up to the circle/diamond or other shape at top center of headboard

  38. Have you considered replacing the two small curtain rods on that wall with one long rod that spans the entire space? You could then pull the curtains to the center to create soft folds behind the headboard during the day. It would also allow the nightstands to stand alone and shine rather than having the curtains crowding the corners when open.

  39. I recommend not putting anything on that wall. You’ve got the curtains with trim and the orange lamps on each side. In my opinion there would be too much going on in the room if you add more on that wall and the vibe wouldn’t be as restful.

  40. I would leave it. The headboard is gorgeous.

If you really feel that you need something there wait a little while to see how everything looks finished.

  41. I do like either of the two set of 3 sun/starburst mirrors hung at different levels. But maybe once everything is in place and finished you will know what is supposed to be up there!!

  42. I’m a less-is-more type, and do see this is an easy win, you’d enjoy. But the install can add motivation zapping complication if something is off. It seems it’ll be a timing effort with the install now to declare the room Done!

I have a suggestion, make/purchase this after finishing the bedroom goals you made for 2026. I was confused because the bed linens are not on the list as well. This decor can be the fun/pretty congrats project to yourself. You will have some sort of pictures available then to play with then. I’m sorry if this comes off as a micro-manager-type comment. I’d love to see you have fun with this vs treat it as a task to complete.

  43. My first thought was 3 small mirrors. I love the first (Amazon) mirror! The feathers would be a subtle nod to the white bird installation, the bird fabric, and the birds in the bathroom mural.

  44. Hi Kristi, if you want something textural and not necessarily artwork, how about a few more of the ceramic birds from the other wall? Then could have flown ahead of the rest of the flock?

  45. I think a triptych acrylic pour set would be nice in that space. The fluidity of the pour would soften the rigidity of the rectangular frame shape(s). If it were my choice, I would use the white paint color on your trims/doors as the base color, and then incorporate the room colors into the pour design, leaving a decent amount of white space.

  46. Kristi, I hope the dreamstime.com link below will open for you. It shows a narrow 3D panel of moulded leaves. I think it would blend beautifully with your birds on the other wall and stay true to your “nature” theme. This one is quite bulky and bold; but with your talents, you could easily make a scaled down version and even make it curved to echo your bedhead.

  47. I love the headboard as the statement. It is stunning. I would leave it as is without art. It is serene and elegant. What a beautiful job!

  48. In my opinion, which is the only one I have, you do not need something on EVERY wall. Let your eyes rest on something. You have the television and landscape on one wall, birds on another wall, door and windows on another wall, bed on one wall. If you had to have something, the Wayfair asymmetrical was the best idea, I thought.

My house is wall to wall pictures and furniture. Sometimes I feel like I am going to choke because I have no breathing space. But everything you do turns out beautifully so what do I know………

  49. I love the bed…it is gorgeous. Out of your four options for art above the bed…I love #1 and #4. It is similar to the print on the headboard but in a different way. I guess maybe because it is circular but has some structure to it.

  50. I like the three mirrors or the one that looks like three but is one piece. The five mirrors are too much. The nice thing about either of these is the curves of the mirrors tie into the curve of the headboard. The edges of the rectangular frames are too harsh for the area above the bed. Maybe wait until the rest of the room is complete and live with the wall blank for a few days to see if it works or needs something above the headboard?

  51. If you must do something, I think it should be long and narrow. How about your first names connected with a heart, or a short phrase that’s meaningful to you, in a script font? Sort of like this (although I would like it better if it was just the names and heart, without the board they’re mounted to): https://www.etsy.com/listing/1705093117/personalized-couple-name-sign-wedding
And in a color you like, of course. 🙂

I also don’t mind the idea of small sunburst mirrors, but I wasn’t a fan of the round mirrors in graduated sizes, arranged in an arch around the headboard. It reminded me of those cartoon thought bubbles. Was it just me that saw it that way? 😀

  52. I think you need a delicate tree branch, not too leafy, painted white across the space, or nothing at all. You need some white up there to balance off all the blue and tie in to your trim around the windows. Didn’t you do birds somewhere?

  53. I was wondering about how much is left when the curtains are closed. I agree that waiting until all is done to see how it looks seems like a smart idea. I think it has to be something lighter and less substantial in the small space. The mirrors look crowded to me…but perhaps something will come to mind when the bed is all done. I’m excited you guys finally have a real bedroom! All is looking so good.

  54. I believe the headboard is so pretty and can stand on it’s own on this wall. At least live with it for a while. What I’ve seen so far is just too average. If you feel it needs something after living with it a while make something creative. Your studio light, spoon art, and many other things you’ve done are so unique I’m sure something would come to you.

  55. First, Ihave to say that your bedroom is looking amazing. I love it. Before I even saw your mock-ups, I was thinking that 3 mini starburst mirrors that mimic the curve of the bed would look great. Like you, I have a tall headboard and not much space above, but it needed someting. So I bought a set of 3 mini sunburst mirrors from Walmart for like $20 about 8 years ago. I still love it, but I bet you could make something even nicer and perfectly to scale to your room.

  56. Love the progress on your bedroom! Imho, the only thing you need around your bed, is a simple pair of gold sconces, maybe something with a globe, positioned on each side of the headboard. Use battery operated candles on a timer and it makes such a relaxing glow in your bedroom at night. They would only accent your beautiful headboard and let it be the focal point as intented.

  57. What about a wood sculpture.. I have a picture but can’t post it.. you can do 3 circles or a curved rectangle.. I am sure you could make one..Obviously you could do wood color, gold ot painted.. or a flower that’s wooded o metal .. again painted or gold.. I do like the mirrors .they looked awesome too!

  58. What about a slightly rectangular print (wider) in the middle with two larger squares on either side. It would be the nice contrast of 90 degree angles around the rounded headboard, but would fill the space better than three squares of the same size.

  59. How about an airy arched metal sculptural branch – gold, copper, or even white? The round mirrors or plates or suns look too much like eyeballs to me LOL

  60. no art work. What about 2 lamps/lights attached to wall instead of on the bed side stands. the headboard is too high and is too pretty. It needs it’s own attention not to be diverted by pictures
