Half Bathroom Planning — A Few Mockups

Yesterday, I presented two different options for the wallpaper for the studio bathroom, and the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the colorful squares. I was actually very happy to see that because this wallpaper just makes me smile. I completely understand that it’s probably too much for some people, but for color lovers like me, it’s just right.

Since I don’t work on Wednesdays, I didn’t get anything done in the bathroom yesterday. The actual work will start today. But I did have some time last night and this morning to do some mockups based on your suggestions. I had fun trying out some of these different ideas. Keep in mind that these are just quick mockups that I did using my photo editing software, so they’re a bit rough. But they at least give us an idea of what these different combinations might look like in the finished room.

First, I tried out the idea of keeping the ceiling and wainscoting white and painting the vanity the dark eggplant color that’s on the bathroom door. I really like how this looks.

Next, I tried out keeping the ceiling and wainscoting white and using the green from the back entry walls on the vanity. I didn’t get the green exactly right, but it’s close enough for a mockup.

I also tried out the idea of keeping the ceiling white but painting the wainscoting the green from the back entry walls and the vanity the dark eggplant color of the bathroom door. I really like this, too.

From there, I started trying out some more daring looks. I tried out the idea of keeping the ceiling white but using the studio cabinet color on the wainscoting and the eggplant color on the vanity. As much as I love color, this might even be too much for me. 😀

Several people mentioned the idea of color drenching the ceiling, trim, and parts of the walls that aren’t wallpapered, so I tried out that idea using the green from the back entry. Again, I couldn’t get the green exactly right, but it’s close enough for a mockup.

And then I decided to try out the most daring option — the studio cabinet color. I obviously love this color since I painted all of my cabinets this color, but the idea of using so much of it in such a small space gives me pause. I think I would actually love it when it’s finished, but I might be too scared to actually try it. 😀

And finally, a few people suggested using the wallpaper on the ceiling and then color drenching the rest of the room in one color, so I tried out the green. It’s the only color I could imagine using this way. Honestly, I don’t love the idea of the wallpaper being confined to the ceiling. This might be a little blah for me. (Ignore the “reflection” of the wallpaper in the mirror. Obviously, if the wallpaper is on the ceiling, it wouldn’t be reflected like that in the mirror.)

Anyway, these were fun ideas to try out. I’m not quite sure which direction I’ll go with the ceiling and the non-wallpapered walls. Right now, the only thing I’m sure about is that the colorful squares wallpaper will be used on the upper walls, and I’m about 95% sure that I’ll be using the eggplant color on the vanity. The rest will come together as I start working on the room.

UPDATE: I’m adding another option based on a suggestion from the comments — an eggplant vanity and the lightest purple from the wallpaper on the wainscoting.

    1. Came here to say the same. green/eggplant/white ceiling. I think the coral is too much because it is a warm color. Since you really want to rest in a restroom, adding in bigger doses of cooler colors like green and eggplant makes sense. The wallpaper will have enough warm/energizing colors.

  1. Started thru mock-ups n thought, hope she doesn’t change the white. Then I saw green wainscoting and eggplant vanity and wallpaper on top half walls with ceiling white . That’s my favorite. The green wainscoting made everything with the foyer really come together.

  2. Eggplant vanity is the clear choice, IMO. For the wall/ceiling treatment, I actually like the WP on the ceiling idea with the green color drench, but I’d want to see more of that pattern, so I’d pull it down onto the walls in one of two ways:
    1. Inset it into the center panels of the wainscoting on the lower wall
    2. Do a strip of it (roughly the size of the original yellow tile backsplash) framed out by molding in between top and lower walls.

I just think that using the WP sparingly will leave you so many more options for decor/artwork, towels, etc.

  3. The last one is the one. I loved them all, and one of them made me think I would definitely be able to get in and out very quickly, that would be the all pink one, but it’s going to be a beautiful bathroom when done.
Cheers to you, Matt, and the Fur Inspection Team

  4. The first one seemed to be the most impactful to me. It makes the wallpaper the star but brings in the deep purple and makes it pop! The rest just detract and make things look muddled! Love it!

  5. Hi Kristi: By far, my favorite is the green drenched ceiling and walls with the eggplant vanity! It really highlights the wallpaper and makes it the shiny star of the room. Plus, it ties in the studio, foyer and bathroom the best of all of your listed options. As always, I look forward to seeking what you choose.

  6. I’m in the minority – as usual! It looks like you are leaning toward eggplant. To me, in that small room, that color is very dark. (I realize it ties in with the door color.) I like the green a bit better but to me the best move would be to use the gorgeous pink you used on your other cabinetry. Keep everything else white, but frame a portion of the wallpaper as art. Or, use the wallpaper as a border around the top of the wainscoting. This probably wouldn’t be enough color for you though! Whatever you end up doing I know it will look great.

  7. I like the eggplant vanity, the wallpaper, as you show in the mockup and the light purple on the lower part. It softens the wallpaper, it blends with no further contrasting element introduced, and it pulls it all together.

As for the comfort level of those who enter through the door: I think they will smile just as you are doing. Me, too.

It is going to be lovely. By the way, I like the mirror you showed.

  8. I like the eggplant vanity, wallpaper walls, and white wainscoting best. It gives a good balance of white with the ceiling and floor.
I’m curious what you’ll do for a backsplash. The tile from before always seemed a little heavy to me and didn’t seem necessary to carry around the whole room. What options are you looking at?

  9. I really like the green walls and eggplant vanity, but what about painting the vanity the same color as the studio cabinets? That gives the space continuity of wall and cabinet color. Just a thought. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

  10. Like you, I am a color lover, but I kind of like the white wainscoting…It gives my eyes a place to rest. I know that whatever you choose will look great! Enjoy your project! Forgot…I love the green option, bright and cheerful! 🩷

  11. I see you want to keep the pink for the studio cabinets, but painting the vanity that color would help connect the half bath to the studio. That with the wallpaper on top and ceiling and wainscoting the same as the studio ceiling (did that stay blue or go back to white–I can’t remember) would look connected but it’s own space. Can’t wait to see what you decide.

  12. Number 3, white ceiling, wallpapered walls, green wainscoting and eggplant vanity. It just flows when looking into studio. I imagine it would flow just as well when looking toward French doors and drapes and eggplant door on opposite wall.

  13. Completely random idea… but have you thought about doing wallpaper on the bottom and a solid color on top? (Would that be like reverse wainscoting?)

I like what someone else said about your eyes having a place to rest solid color. The eggplant vanity is lovely though!
